Pics December 2013
In these areas there will be the new public park of Porta Nuova Business District. Design by dutch architect Petra Blaisse

project:
In 2011 the idea of “Biblioteca degli Alberi” (Library of Trees) is still alive and up to date! In 2010
- 6 years after the final result of the competition - we were able to revive the project,
assess the changes in the surrounding context and adjust and develop the design.
The park - located between Stazione di Porta Garibaldi and Stazione Centrale - will be the beating heart between municipality and commercial offices,
fashion and culture related buildings, vital public transport knots, busy streets and quiet residential areas.

The main idea of the competition design in 2003 was to add a new type of park to the urban landscape of Milan: the Biblioteca degli Alberi (Library of Trees),
a new form of public park that exhibits a collection of different trees; a park that represents a modern version of the Botanic Garden;
a park that through its connective web of paths and its varied cultural program becomes a Cultural Campus; a place where people can meet, enjoy and educate themselves;
a place for leisure, sports, beauty and learning; a place that connects all areas and inhabitants that surround it and that is itself connected to all sides and on all levels.

'Bosco Verticale' Vertical Forest Nearing Completion

At first glance it looked too fantastical to be real, but now the completion date for the world’s first vertical forest is drawing near. Located in Milan, Bosco Verticale is Boeri Studio’s answer to the question of how to make cities greener while supporting an ever denser urban population. New photographs start to show the appearance of the finished residential tower blocks now that most of the scaffolding has been dismantled. Most of the 100 different species of trees and shrubs are in place, surrounding the external cladding. You can begin to imagine relaxing high up above the city amongst the dappled sunlight breaking through the leaves, breathing the fresh air, filtered by the forest microclimate, deep into your lungs. Completion is expected by late spring/early summer 2014 and an application for LEED Gold certification has been submitted.

On flat land, each building has the capacity to hold, in amount of trees, shrubs and ground cover plants, an area equal to 10.000 sqm of forest. This includes 480 large and medium size trees, 250 small size trees, 11,000 groundcover plants and 5,000 shrubs. Greywater recycling will water the vegetation and integrated photovoltaic panels will provide power. In terms of population, each tower supports the equivalent population of an area of single family dwellings of nearly 50,000 sqm. The smallest apartment is 65 sqm and includes a small woodland terrace. The largest apartment is around 450 sqm with a terrace of around 80 sqm.

The architects are looking forward to the next phase when the engineers, builders, masons, lawyers and electricians finish their work and residents begin new lives within the project. Every plant has been chosen by botanists to thrive in it’s particular orientation and microclimate within the structure. Moreover, a specialized maintenance company will keep the vertical forest in good health in the years to come. Dolce Vita Homes have worked in collaboration with Coima Image to design the interior specifications of the apartments. Residenze Porta Nuova have begun marketing the apartments. Metropolitan reforestation could become a buzz word as future developments utilize this innovative concept to simultaneously increase biodiversity and provide inspirational city dwellings.

Mobility and sustainability: how build a smart green city

Milan City Council approve the New Territorial Plan: it revive social and economic sectors, but especially the environment. Having a smart green city is the goal of coming decades. The key points are: sustainable mobility and more pedestrian areas, reform rules of constructions, expansion of green areas, sustainable buildings and efficency energy rating A+. The aim is to mitigate population density, improve services, infrastructures. Great interest to Social Housing, with new apartments and conversion of old buildings that must comply new rules. Plan adopted by Milan, involves use of local ecological networks, making natural and agricultural systems open to all citizens. Agricultural areas will become cultural and historical heritage. The plan attempts to redevelop entire neighborhoods, improve the quality of life on a global scale, reduce consumptions and improve local productivity.

Bonnet Tower
14,000 m2. Feasibility studies, executive designs

GBPA together with the office Asti Architetti renovated this building in the centre of Milan. The estate is located in the triangle included between Garibaldi railway station, Corso Como and Moscova, a mixed area with a high number of offices, shops and luxury residences. The proposal of a new facade, the re-design of the adjacent green area and the creation of a roof garden formed the necessary interventions that would transform this building in a modern structure, able to compete within the current market.

Bignami ---> Bignami - Parco Nord
Ca' Granda ---> Ca' Granda - Pratocentenaro
Cordusio ---> Cordusio - Pinacoteca Ambrosiana
Domodossola FNM ---> Domodossola FN

"Library of the Trees", a public park in Porta Nuova Business District
It isn't just a park, but a walking through knowledge. "Library of the Trees" suggests a modern interpretation of a botanical garden, emphasizing cultural aspect linked to the mythological history and poetic expressions, through inclusion in the pavement of poetic verses and botanical nomenclature. The network of linear paths that connect the park with adjacent parts of the city are hierarchically divided into main routes and secondary routes.

Areas identified by the intersections of linear paths that will be arranged according to a specific character. Circular forests are "natural rooms" covered by foliage of the trees, as opposed to the free spaces of the park and become equipped spaces. Each area will have special activities, with a level of equipment than the standard of the rest of the future park, including pergolas with tables, bocce courts, open space for movies and more, playgrounds, fountains with water games and flower beds for vegetables and flowers.

The paths generate an irregular mosaic of areas: each one will have a specific composition that form a series of architectural and ornamental gardens. There are gardens of flowers, herbs or shrubs, play areas, picnic, a maze, several examples of topiary, bamboo gardens and a pond with aquatic plants, amphibians and fish, roses and aromatic plants, a flower garden and a garden for dogs. Then services, food centers, little squares.
