Milan Expo site to become sports center after 2015

The governor of Lombardy this week asked the head of the Italian National Olympic Committee (CONI) to propose a special sports enclave for the site of Milan Expo 2015, to be built after the conclusion of the food-themed world fair next year. "Today marks the first step for the post-Expo future," said Lombardy Governor Roberto Maroni. The theme of Milan Expo 2015 is "Feeding the planet - Energy for life". It tackles issues such as food security, hunger, and promotes environmentally, socially, economically sustainable global food production practices. A total of 145 countries and organizations are participating in the Universal Exposition, which takes place next year from May 31 to October 31 in an area of more than 100 hectares near Milan's massive Rho Pero trade fair exhibition centre.

Maroni asked CONI President Giovanni Malagò to come up with a proposal for a "sports citadel" after the world fair is dismantled, speaking at the Ex(s)port 2015 conference in Milan on sports initiatives to support Milan Expo 2015. "I asked Malagò for a hand. He should tell us what facilities CONI would like to have, and we will then find the resources. For this good project, we will find them," Maroni said. "I would like for the sports citadel to become not only an Italian point of excellence, but also a European one," Maroni added. Malagò already has in mind a new generation, Olympic-sized swimming pool and an indoor sports arena. "You don't need a rocket scientist to understand that Milan needs a new generation Olympic swimming pool, which it doesn't have today," Malagò said at the margins of the conference. "And then a sports palace is also needed," Malagò continued, adding that the arena would help reinforce sports traditions in Milan like ice-skating, and could support efforts like "Armani's adventure in basketball".

Italian fashion designer Giorgio Armani has owned and helmed Milan's Olimpia pro-basketball team since he took control of it in the 2008-2009 period. Malagò floated the idea of building a multi-sport arena that could host professional soccer matches as well, given interest expressed by one of Milan's two professional football teams, A.C. Milan. Malagò said such a move could also benefit other sports like volleyball and hockey. "We all have put our faces forward, and if Expo doesn't go well, Italy can not vie for the Olympics," as that would raise questions of credibility, Malagò said. Malagò also called Expo 2015 commissioner Giuseppe Sala "a serious person who is doing everything possible for a race against time" to the Expo. "I am rooting for teamwork to make a contribution to sports and society on the site once Expo has terminated," Malagò said. Malagò underlined his desire to help city government and the region "to be able to give life to a structure that allows activities that until now have not been possible to carry out".

Daniel Libeskind takes us on a tour of his newly completed
residential complex in Milan's CityLife development

A new neighbourhood coming up in the northwest of Milan is unlike anything the Italian metropolis has seen before. Based on a master plan by Studio Daniel Libeskind, Zaha Hadid Architects and Arata Isozaki & Associates, CityLife, as the scheme is called, is set on the 25-hectare walled-off piece of city that used to house Milan’s former trade fair (since relocated to the Fuksas-designed extravaganza to the west of the city).

Set along 10 hectares of green parkland and water features designed by landscape architecture practice Gustafson Porter, the site will eventually include three tall glass office towers designed by Libeskind, Isozaki and Hadid, a shopping district, a lower residential tower by Libeskind, and two relatively low-rise residential complexes by Libeskind and Hadid in the southern part of the district.

I am here to see the just completed first phase of the Libeskind Residences, a residential complex of five buildings measuring between seven and 14 storeys high and containing 308 housing units, including 22 double-height penthouses or ‘villas’. 'We wanted the lower buildings to be placed closer to the historic fabric of the city,' explains Daniel Libeskind as we stand in the CityLife showroom located at the edge of the busy construction site.

The buildings that make up the housing cluster – or ‘archipelago’ as Libeskind likes to say - were oriented to maximise daylight and the connection to the surrounding streets and to give views from existing perspectives. They were also arranged so as to create an internal car-free ‘social space’ that, he says, was inspired by the context. 'There is an analogy here to the classic Italian courtyard,' says the architect, referring to the interior courtyards that were so prevalent in Milanese housing until WWII, adding, 'Parents can watch their kids playing in the piazza, like in old times.' Importantly, all owners will have access to the private underground parking structure.

The residential complex’s greatest strength is the buildings’ façades, which are ‘clad’ in a textured and marbled tile developed by innovative Italian ceramics company Casalgrande Padana. It looks like travertine but is, in fact, reinforced porcelain and designed to be self-cleaning. 'All buildings look good when they are first built,' smiles Libeskind.

The asymmetrical and faceted glass-and-tile balconies wrap around the buildings creating an expressiveness that is further enhanced by undulating sun-shading louvres made of a bamboo polymer composite, also designed for greater durability and sustainability than a conventional wood such as teak. 'The exteriors are as articulated as possible so that each apartment is unique both in footprint and façade,' points out Libeskind.

The master plan for the larger site involved keeping and comprehensively refurbishing a few of the historic structures that belonged to the trade fair, including an early-1920s stadium, a 1930s velodrome and two Art Nouveau gate buildings. 'Opening the site up and connecting it to the urban fabric was the main concept,' explains Libeskind. 'At the centre you have the hub of office buildings, the high-density working area.' Several underground car parks and a new metro stop in the site’s centre will ensure that this is a pedestrian- and bicycle-only space. 'The idea is that you can live and work in one place.' Whether the Milanese take to this 21st century vertical way of living and working remains to be seen. What is certain is that in a city with plenty of hardscaping, CityLife will provide a welcome moment of green respite and the possibility of calling a major new city park, home.

Continues Milan's transformation: a city more friendly and suitable for pedestrians and cyclists.

These two new projects represent an additional and important element. First project is located in an area between Porta Venezia and Piazza San Babila, and is divided into two parts. Between Via Palestro and Via Senate, will be carried out two one-way bike paths, extend to the existing one, affecting road and a marginal portion of the pavement. From Via Senato to Piazza San Babila, will be created a Zone 30, with a widening of sidewalks, that will be completely redone with new flooring slabs (gray Beola). The project ensures the preservation of parking areas. The second project concerns creation of a Zone 30 in Viale Romagna, which will dedicated primarily to pedestrians and cyclists. And some parts of the sidewalks will be widened to slow the speed of vehicles. Then there will be green areas to improving pedestrian accessibility. Finally, it is planned the construction of two bicycle lanes (one on each side) in Piazzale Susa. These projects, together with another approved project for Viale Tunisia, are part of a pattern of re-stitching of walking and cycling routes.

Casa della Memoria (inside 'Library of Trees' contemporary urban park, in Porta Nuova Business District)

The Casa della Memoria will utilize the full potential of new technologies without detracting from what has been acquired over the course of history. It will house the material archives of historical institutions, whose mission it is to document the last century of the city of Milan. At the same time, it will grow from its trunk of paper files into a new digital repository, propagating knowledge further afield. ‘Augmented Reality’ is one of the most innovative inventions of the digital revolution: allowing you t project the knowledge accumulated in the digital archives of the past on the physical reality of the present. Like a magic lantern, the Casa della Memoria will cast pictures of the past where the events transpired. The past is not destroyed, but is saved and made visible.

Construction works of new metro line M4 are started (blue line). It will be the second automatic line, without driver, after M5.

M4 = 14.2 km from Milano City Airport to San Cristoforo Station Railway., 78 months to construct it.
