Via Torino, a rebirth after 60 years
The walls of the eighteenth century, the decorative pilasters, an ornamental arch, a pair of columns and portals of the inner courtyard, will be restored. Initial roadmap provides for the delivery of offices (2000 sqm), shops (3000 sqm), and luxury residences in spring 2015.

Piazzale Loreto will change its 'face'

From a chaotic place, to a great urban plaza for citizens and tourists; keeping just necessary spaces for cars (it is a strategic road hub). Piazzale Loreto will have a new life.

Today 56% of square is occupied by traffic, 25% unused, and 19% sidewalks. Probably City's government will take as a model, the Columbus Circle of New York City: a forced roundabout, with an interruption (the continuous line that connects Viale Buenos Aires to Viale Monza). Project is still under design, and definitely will be built after Expo 2015, because the city find investments for at least 10 million euros.

Let me give a little more context to the building in Via Torino.

Just after world war II, there was a plan to demolish large sections of the southern part of the city centre in Milan, to build a wide boulevard.
That area in via Torino was bombed but, since it lay on the future area of the boulevard, it was never reconstructed.

Luclily, such plan was dropped after only half of such boulevard was built (Corso Europa, Via Larga and Via Albricci, with a lot of heritage loss). However, due to our not-so-perfect bureaucracy () the area was unlocked only in 2007!

If you're using the new version of Google Maps, you can see how the area looked like in 2008, from via Torino: a temporary parking lot with ruins behind and loads of advertisements: https://www.google.it/maps/@45.46177...Cw!2e0!6m1!1e1

Here's the view on the back: the first two floors of the ruins will be refurbished and included in the new building, as you can see in the last drawing shared by IThomas

https://www.google.it/maps/@45.46141...hIUelHV0JQ!2e0

And this is the same area in the 1960/70s, when a multi-storey mechanical parking was built!

Now all provinces are deceased, and according to new law (which regulates 10 cities around Italy), Milan will enlarge its boundaries and became a city of more 4 mln people in just 1,980 sqkm, I think (and we don't consider other towns or villages, that will can join with new Milan). Btw we'll see.

I guess he was referring to urban areas, not metro areas. As Italian cities are much more suburban, and lack the careful planning of many other European counterparts, their population is way harder to define, as their boundaries are quite subjective.

Milan is an example of a city whose urban area is extremely hard to precisely define, and with huge, fuzzy metropolitan area.

According to some rumors, Galeries Lafayette has bought Palazzo Broggi, in Piazza Cordusio (Milan historic center), to open its department store.

Milan urban area is bigger, anyway

I think he just wanted to see a confrontation between various cities in Europe by population by considering the same area (310 km² which is the extension of Munich municipality)

Nothing more than this

Milan like Sydney: a monorail from Linate Airport to Rho Fair District

People could move quickly from Linate Airport to Rho Fiera thanks to a monorail (Sydney's style), that now is under design. Project includes a fast circular link, possibly carried out with a more modern system. Starting point at Linate airport, where will be located a station of future metro line M4. First stop: Exhibition Park Novero. Second stop: Redecesio. Third stop: Westfield Milan, the magnificent mall which will be built soon and could be inside a new sports arena. The next station connects directly to the Rho Fair. An extension of the line could reach Malpensa International Airport.
