Milan Design Expo from April to September 2016.

After a 20-year pause, the Triennale di Milano design exhibition will be returning in 2016. The 21st edition of the International Exhibition of Design and Architecture, titled '21st Century: Design After Design', is slated to run from April 2 to September 12, said Triennale chief Claudio De Albertis in presenting the project to 80 foreign consulates and foreign institutions. "The decision to begin holding the exhibition again originated from the establishment of the foundation," De Albertis said. "Then, however, it was thought that biennales and triennales were in decline. We now know that this is not true". The project for the 21st Triennale got underway a year ago with the support of the former Italian government of Enrico Letta, which submitted the request to the Bureau International des Expositions. "The new government maintained the commitment," said the Triennale director, who announced the participation of the Milan town council, the Lombardy regional government and the chambers of commerce of Milan, Monza and Brianza.

Making use of the Palazzo dell'Arte, which was built in 1933 to hold the exhibition, the 2016 Triennale will get the entire city involved. The pavilions of the guest nations will be in key locations of Milan's cultural scene including the Fabbrica del Vapore, Hangar Bicocca, IULM, the Polytechnic, the Museum of Cultures and Monza's Ville Reale. The central theme will be the relationship between design and the economy, with a focus on Southeast Asia. The 2016 Triennale aims to surpass the 36 participant nations in the last official edition in 1996. According to De Albertis, large-scale participation by countries and Italian and foreign cultural institutes is the key to making the exhibition an event held every three years once again. "The revolutions in design all began here, and we want to leave our mark with the 8th and the 13th," editions, he said. The dates were carefully chosen: April 2 is also the opening of the Salone del Mobile 2016 ("our main interlocutor"), while September 12 will see the Formula One Grand Prix in Monza. The year, 2016, will also be the one after the Expo, useful to "keep up the momentum. Milan will not be abandoned," he said.

The budget currently stands at 12 million euros: five million euros of direct financing for the Triennale, five million euros as fees from the nations taking part and two million euros from ticket sales. Expenditure is expected to include three million euros for the Italian pavilion, welcoming spaces and shows connected with the foreign exhibits; 6.5 million for the external sites; and 2.5 million euros for communication and promotion. The 21st International Exhibition will be curated by a scientific committee under De Albertis and will include BIE Secretary General Vicente Gonzales Loscertales, Arturo Dell'Acqua Bellavitis and Silvana Annichiarico (Museo del Design), Andrea Cancellato (Triennale director) and well-known figures from the worlds of architecture, design and economy, such as Andrea Branzi, Luisa Collina, Elizabeth Diller, Ricardo Scofidio, Kenya Hara, Stefano Micelli, Pierluigi Nicolin, Richard Sennett and Cino Zucchi.

Another five: Monumentale, Cenisio, Gerusalemme, Tre Torri (CityLife district) and Portello, located along the central section of the metro line, between Garibaldi and Lotto, will be completed within October 2015.

Further developments are being planned, in addition to those already under construction. The extension of M1 from Bisceglie to Baggio, the one of M2 from Cologno Nord to Vimercate, the extension of M3 between S.Donato and Paullo and finally the extension of M5 from San Siro to Settimo and from Bignami to Monza. About 38,3 km and 23 stations in project.

The 'City of Culture': a new great museum in Milan
David Chipperfield infills post-industrial block

the curving-formed glass ‘lantern’ emerges from a series of interconnected rectangular volumes

The ‘City of Culture’ project involves the transformation of an urban block in the formerly industrial Ansaldo area of Milan, for use as a museum complex. Following a design competition in 2000, David Chipperfield architects received the commission for the redevelopment efforts, which included the conception of a new facility to house the ‘center of non-european cultures’ and the renovation of surrounding existing structures. the central structure, which sits hidden at the center of the site, has recently been completed and awaits a near future opening.

the ‘lantern’ volume’s form translates to to the interior as a central atrium

The new building is arranged as a series of interconnected zinc-clad rectangular volumes, while a curving-formed glass ‘lantern’ emerges at the center in contrast to the rest of the industrially-referential facility. This distinctive element shelters the museum’s atrium and creates a site organization similar to that of a traditional milanese courtyard block. David Chipperfield explains ‘given that [the surrounding buildings] are all industrial, we felt that [the street facing elevations] were not façades. Actually, the interesting thing was to create an internal façade, in that you go into the building and then – like in a milan courtyard – you would find the façade.’

soft daylight illuminates the space

From the central atrium, enclosed by two layers of curving glass panels, accessed is permitted to the surrounding exhibition spaces and greater museum complex. Institutions complementing the new construction ‘center of non-european cultures’ include a ‘new archaeological museum’, the ‘CASVA’ (center for the study of visual arts), and the ‘colla brothers’ laboratory of traditional puppets’.

Bocconi University - Residential building for students

This work refers to the restructure of an existing building (viale Isonzo 23) and the construction of a new one (viale Isonzo 21) for the making of residential area for university students. The existing building is planned as a hotel with single rooms whilst the new building has been developed in apartments, each one for four students. On the residential floors there are common areas. In Viale Isonzo, as example, there is a first floor with a living room, a study and reading room and a winter garden.

On the second level there is another relax area and on the third floor there is a gallery overlooking the lower floors. These common areas are the main aggregation places for the residents. In the main entrance at Viale Isonzo 21 there is a porter’s lodge and the security areas. This project is aimed to guarantee efficiency and comforts at the university campus including both cultural and recreational services as well as the administrative and technological ones.

Bosco Verticale won International Highrise Award 2014

Bosco Verticale won the "International Highrise Award 2014" as tallest, beautiful and most innovative skyscraper in the world. Designed by Stefano Boeri, Bosco Verticale contended the prize with other four skyscrapers: De Rotterdam in Rotterdam (Netherlands), One Central Park in Sydney (Australia), Renaissance Barcelona Fira Hotel in Barcelona (Spain) and Sliced Porosity Block in Chengdu (China).

The award, considered the most prestigious of its kind, is organized every two years in Frankfurt, by the German Architecture Museum: the winner is chosen by a "multidisciplinary" jury which evaluates projects for their design and their innovative technology, as well as the ability to integrate it into the urban environment.

More news about "City of Culture Museum"

David Chipperfield won a competition in 2000 to design the Città delle Culture (City of Culture) complex in the former Ansaldo factory, located south-west of the city in the creative district surrounding Via Tortona. Due to open early next year, it will create a home for the Centre for Advanced Studies of Visual Art (CASVA), the Centre of Non-European Cultures and the New Archaeological Museum.

The complex comprises an assemblage of two, three and four-storey volumes, framing a network of courtyards and passages designed to help integrate the new structures with the surrounding industrial architecture. The central block is a curving opaque-glass hall, creating a glowing beacon at the heart of the site. Around this, the architects designed a series of boxy buildings, featuring a standing-seam cladding of zinc-titanium. The complex will also accommodate a laboratory for a traditional puppet maker, as well as an auditorium, a restaurant and a bookshop.

British architect David Chipperfield has an office in Milan, in addition to those in London, Berlin and Shanghai. Earlier this month he was also appointed artistic director of Italian furniture brand Driade.
