How it was in '50s

Built in 1953, the former AGIP station in Piazzale Accursio -designed by Mario Bacciocchi- will become the new 'Garage Italia Customs' headquarters (the company specialized in customizing cars, boats and helicopters).

The building will be completely renovated as a unique place of the Italian excellences, bringing together different talents -like the famous chef Carlo Cracco- under one roof, serving as a meeting and reference point for the Made in Italy lovers.

Excelsior Hotel Gallia
Milan | Zone 2

design: Studio Marco Piva (redevelopment works)
status: completed (redevelopment works)

The extensive architecture and interior design project marries contemporary aesthetics with the hotel’s original Belle Époque style. Inside the hotel a unique collection of more than 500 pieces of art, including paintings, sculptures and photographs. The interiors feature distinct references to Milanese lifestyle and the timeless elegance of the Art Deco era, including furnishings exclusively created by Italian designers and craftsmen.

Excelsior Hotel Gallia comprises two buildings – the fully restored historic palace and a new modern wing with a façade that resembles a delicate steel and glass curtain. The striking juxtaposition is inspired by the hotel’s luminous past and the emerging skyline of the Porta Nuova area. Guests entering the hotel are welcomed by the dazzling sight of a custom-made 30-metre Murano glass chandelier created by De Majo, depicting a waterfall of 180 light cylinders which illuminates the eight-story monumental stairwell. The historical lobby pays tribute to notable Milanese architecture of the 1930s, such as La Scala Theatre, Vittorio Emanuele Gallery and Villa Necchi Campiglio. The public spaces have been outfitted by B&B Italia using aluminium, glass and marble.

Excelsior Hotel Gallia features 235 luxurious guest rooms, including 53 suites. The hotel’s roof-top mixologist bar and signature restaurant Terrazza Gallia is managed with the advice of the renowned Cerea family. With the three Michelin-star duo Enrico and Roberto Cerea providing culinary guidance on Terrazza Gallia, diners can savour the best of traditional Italian and Lombard cuisine with a contemporary twist. Guests seated on the covered and heated outdoor terrace will enjoy a panoramic view of Milan, including the landmark Central Station and the adjacent Pirelli skyscraper by Giò Ponti. Located on the sixth and seventh floors of the hotel, the 1,000sqm spa provides a relaxing and tranquil ambiance with natural daylight, offering a wide range of beauty and wellness rituals as well as a swimming pool and fitness area with the latest equipment from Artis by Technogym.

The hotel’s historical Cupola room on the seventh floor houses a modern, multifunctional space equipped with the latest audio-visual technology, making it a spectacular and unique venue for celebrations and events. Connecting the historical centre of the hotel with the main hall of the new building is the indoor “Promenade”, a charming 100-metre walkway with large boutique windows from the fashionable Montenapoleone Street. The ground floor of the new wing features 12 meeting rooms, as well as 700sqm of foyer space.

CityLife
Milan | Zone 8

design: Arata Isozaki, Zaha Hadid, Daniel Libeskind + other architecture firms from around the world
status: U/C
cost: 523 million euros

CityLife area, one of Milan's most ambitious recent real estate development projects developed by Italian insurance group Generali, is now expected to be completed by 2018.

“There have been some moments of difficulty and delay” said CEO of Generali, Mario Greco, on Thursday, “but now the projects proceeds quickly and by 2018 we expect to have completed everything and to deliver a neighborhood that can integrate with the city of Milan through its offices, its houses, its green spaces and the commercial activities that will be born here.”

The first tower (Il Dritto), designed by Japanese architect Arata Isozaki, has already been completed externally. By the end of 2016, the interior spaces are expected to be completed, which will be ready to host Allianz employees by 2017. The second tower (Lo Storto), designed by archistar Zaha Hadid is currently U/C. While the foundations of the third tower (Il Curvo), the one designed by Daniel Libeskind, will be poured in early December, with an official ceremony to be held on the Feast of St. Ambrose, which Libeskind will attend.

CityLife, with its 36.6 ha (including offices, luxury residences, services, shopping mall, restaurants, entartainment spaces, public park), is an innovative urban model, in addition to being Italy's largest urban requalification project, it is one the most important ones in all of Europe, and around the world.

The mayor of Milan, Giuliano Pisapia, said foreign investment is especially welcome in the real estate sector. "Buildings built here stay here, so it's not important where the capital is from," he said. "The issue of foreign investment in companies is a bit more complex. It's important that people who come here to invest stay here." Regarding CityLife, he agreed with Greco it was an "innovative and integrated" model, and said the main goal must now be to make this a lively and living area.

BASE Milano
Milan | Zone 6

status: U/C (redevelopment works)

Its main objective is to renovate the relation between culture and economy, future and everyday, between democracy, well-being and knowledge economy, social innovation and development. It is not fortuitous that "base" means "foundation", it is the beginning of something new, but also the support of an existing project, what makes it solid. A base is a new beginning, a new language created from scratch. A dream and a substance altogether.

BASE is the place where experience and experimentation combine, where culture is the value at the core of every decision-making process, the key to understand and interpret the world and its manifold evolutions. A place for work, fun, education, where the dialogue and interaction between different worlds become a catalyst for new discoveries and projects. BASE is a project by ARCI Milano, Avanzi, esterni, h+, Make a Cube³.

BASE is looking for strategic partners willing to work together with a team of promoters in the construction of a unique project, unprecedented in Italy and strongly bound to the most interesting hybrid centers throughout Europe and worldwide.

This venture means to create a point of reference, a solid basis for the creation of collaborations and synergies initiating from the city of Milan, with an international horizons. For this reason BASE reserves the right to co-produce top value cultural and social projects by jointly covering expenses and offering activities of monitoring and incubation. Selected groups, enterprises and associations will benefit of physical spaces, services or strategic and production support.

CO-WORKING, INCUBATION AND ACCELERATION
Coworking activities are key in the creation of an ecosystem conducive to the development of innovative projects in the field of cultural and creative enterprises. The co-working space we provide is unique in dimension, pleasant atmosphere, functionality, flexibility, location and contamination, given the space's other functions: residency, auditorium, training classes, artisan workshops, exhibition halls, products and services display areas.

LABORATORIES
The co-working space will be combined with a number of equipped lab spaces, accessible to both in-house subjects (coworkers, incubated subjects, people in residence, artists) as well as external collaborators. The laboratories will accomodate areas focused on prototyping, production, learning and interaction platforms.

EVENTS
Artistic and cultural planning BASE Milano produces and distributes cultural content in collaboration with its in-house communities and cultural/artistic institutions in Milan and across Europe. BASE is looking for partners who, together with Base Milano's team and promoters, conceive and distribute projects, initiatives and cultural events. BASE is also interested in exploring the fields of design, quality craftsmanship and technology.

The opening is expected for March 30, 2016.

Dossier: Tree of Life to stay at the Expo site

Expo's symbolic Tree of Life will not be moved after the world's fair closes on October 31, said Expo Commissioner and CEO Giuseppe Sala on Wednesday. The Tree of Life is a sculpture and interactive installation that has served as the centrepiece for the Italian Pavilion at Expo. Sala said the structure, which is equipped to perform light shows and special effects, has "very delicate technology" and that it would be more complex to take it down and put it back up somewhere else.

"During the months of construction site work and dismantling the exposition site we'll be careful to keep it active and to provide maintenance," Sala said. Sala said Expo dismantling would be finished prior to May, but the goal is for Palazzo Italia and Pavilion Zero to be closed off during dismantling work and then reopened in the spring. "It's within our intentions, but we have to work on it," Sala said, adding that Palazzo Italia would remain unchanged, preserving its current interior exhibit.

The whole expo area will undergo a development project which is going to be designed. There will be implemented university faculties and dorms, a businness centre, residential areas, parks, hotels, sport facilities.

This is going to be an utter failure in a site surrounded by motorways and railway lines on all sides. There has been no strategy to regenerate the site in the longer term.

after the conclusion of the Expo (31 october) the area will be transformed. there are lot's of project for the area. The aim of politician is to make it attractive. there is any kind of connection (metro, trains, tram, busses, motorways) with the city centre and the rest of the world, and this is a very positive aspect to be considered for the future of the area. furthermore, next spring the italian pavillion (palazzo Italia) and the zero pavillion (padiglione zero) will be permanently re-opened to visitors.
the fact that the expo site is far from the other symbolic icons of Milan city centre must be no more a problem, because the real city is not only included in the municipality borders, but it's far more extended, and also ouside the municipality -but still in full urban area- there are lot's of other relatively-unknown touristic areas that must be more known and touristic in the future, together with the expo site, inside the "greater Milan" (part of it is now officially included in the metropolitan city of Milan since last january 1th)

I think the only way to survive this site is to create fireworks events or something like that to give reasons to go there. A university site NEVER attracted tourists. Too cold and too dedicated to non tourist things.
Have you seen a lot of tourists visiting silicon valley ??
It's a non sense.

In the center of city trust it would has been a hit for €€€€
