DOSSIER: Milan Mayor went in Chicago to present Navigli project at Urban Waterways Forum

Milan will have a piece of its history back. The reopening of another part of Navigli canals system is just one of city's dreams sustained by Milan mayor, Giuseppe Sala. He presented the project at Urban Waterways Forum in Chicago (U.S.). The forum was attended by other mayors from around the world, including the ones of Paris, Cape Town, Dallas, Lahore and Montreal.

The project is expected to reinforce the tourism-related economy and increasing the value of Milan's architectural heritage.
The project, of great value from an environmental and landscape point of view, could give back its old charm to the whole city, restoring the great Milan and Lombardy waterway system, which could again fulfil its proper transport function, especially of a touristic kind, from Lake Maggiore and Lake Como to the river Po towards Venice and the Adriatic Sea. Reopening the canals represents for Milan a new urban, environmental and economic strategy. It's an extraordinary occasion to upgrade the town along its canals routes and many nearby areas, above and under ground. A special opportunity to invest in quality and to create new activities and roles.
HISTORY
The trails of the idea to make Milan accessible from the sea are lost in the chronicles of times that date before the times of the design and construction of the first artificial navigable canal. The Navigli of Milan are the artificial canals constructed between 1179 and the 16th century. The Navigli were a passing route not only for the merchandise on its' way to Milan but also for the marble of Candoglia used for the construction of the Milan's Cathedral.

It took only 35 years, from 1439 to 1475, to build 90 kilometres of canals on the Milan territory made navigable thanks to the existence of 25 valleys, a characteristic no other city has. The development of the system didn't stop at this point.

It was 1482 when Leonardo da Vinci, as soon as he arrived in Milan, was assigned by Ludwig II il Moro with the task to study a system that would make the navigation from Lake Como to Milan possible. Since then the Navigli were characterized by a continuous development particulary by the construction of new canals and dams.

Urban waterways – whether on rivers, lakes, seas or oceans – have always been natural centers of gravity. For thousands of years, cities around the world were built around bodies of water, first because they are a critical resource and later because they sustain trade and commerce. Transportation and manufacturing have evolved and the old industrial waterways that turned into unused land are again ripe for new design, development and purpose.

The forum featured two discussions: economic opportunity (innovative ways cities are approaching economic development with an eye on nontraditional uses of their waterways and how issues of social equity play into these efforts) and environmental protection (projects around the world utilizing waterways to push environmental efforts critical to cities in the 21st century).

Da Vinci's vino: a visit to Leonardo's vineyard in Milan

While painting the Last Supper, Leonardo would retire to his small vineyard across the road. After being badly damaged in the second world war, the vines are flourishing again and the house is open to visitors:

DOSSIER. "Milano, building the future" plan: projects, investments, opportunities.

Milan is in constant change, always able to reinvent itself. Even its attractiveness changes. And Milan keeps transforming itself, attracting the attention of national politics, which sees the city as the country's true engine and nominates it to host the European Medicines Agency and international projects like the Human Technopole, advanced research center in the field of nutrition. After all, Milan's strength lies in the coexistence of different development engines: research, universities, multinationals, the creative industry, high value-added services, together with a strongly interconnected entrepreneurial fabric that characterizes the Grand Milan. This interconnection is the premise of the birth of a large Metropolitan Chamber of Milan-Monza-Brianza-Lodi with about 370,000 firms. A dense entrepreneurial fabric has always been the key to Milan’s success, as well as the engine of its continuous transformation.

Milan is a city on the move. A city that is more and more attractive, international and lively. Every year, more students coming from all over the world choose our universities, new multinationals (especially in ICT sectors) open their headquarters here, and start-ups shape the future in fab labs and co-working spaces. It is a growing city, where the real estate sector has finally started moving again after difficult years of crisis. Indicators are positive and analysts recommend us to look at the future with optimism and trust. Only ten years ago foreign investments were less than one tenth of the total. There are a lot of opportunities, just think about the projects of urban revitalization of former railway stopovers or abandoned military bases and, more in general, about the great international interest in our city, which paves the way to new investment opportunities. The Town Hall can only support and favor this recovery, and it will do so by continuing to attract investments while safeguarding the Milaneses’ rights to live in a smarter, greener and more people-friendly city, from the center to the suburbs. A Milan that is even more beautiful and right.

AIRPORTS AND MAIN RAIL STATIONS
* In 2015 the Milan airport system served more than 38.7 million passengers.
* Milan Central Station: hub for high-speed trains, connects to Switzerland, France, Germany and Austria; connects to the rest of Italy - 120 million passengers per year.
* Milan Garibaldi Station - national and regional transports.
* Milan Cadorna Station - regional and surburban transports.

LOCAL PUBLIC TRANSPORTS
Italy's most advanced urban transport system with 700 million passengers per year.
* Underground metro network: 4 Lines, 101 km, 113 Stations
* Suburban railway network: 12 Lines, 559 Km, 227 stations
* Tramway network: 18 Lines, 170 Km
* Bus network: 117 Lines, 2,106 Km
* Trolleybus network: 4 Lines, 77 Km

STRENGTHENING PUBLIC TRANSPORTATION INFRASTRUCTURE
* New M4 metro (blue line) - 15 km, 21 stations - Ready in 2022.
* M2 metro: +15% of passengers thanks to ten new trains and the new signaling system in operation in 2019.
* M3 metro: Interchange Milan Maciachini – Seregno. Goal: In operation at the beginning of 2020. Milan Comasina – Limbiate in 2021.
* M5: Milan Bignami – Monza city and Monza hospital S. Gerardo. Works for the first route Milan Bignami – Monza city starting in 2020.
Thanks to these developments, the metro network will reach an extension of 129 km and will comprise 149 stations.
* Construction of the light railway North Certosa FS – M2 Cascina Gobba.
* 55 interchange areas of sustainable mobility all over the city, where you can find all sharing choices, also electric ones, with the security of remotely controlled parking lots for bikes.
* Technologic platform (MAAS - Mobility as a Service) through app or Web to promote integrated packages of mobility services in the whole metropolitan city (train + metro + bus + BikeMi + car sharing + scooter sharing).
* Fare integration and completion of electronic ticketing to simplify the integrated use of public means of transportation (wheel and iron) between the city and the metropolitan city, entirely reforming the current SITA.
* Development of the cycling network and 30 km/h zones.
* Enlargement of bike, car and scooter sharing fleets.
OPEN SPACES AND PROTECTED AREAS
The theme of metropolitan parks and open spaces (protected areas, ecological corridors, agricultural areas, etc.) is a cornerstone of the model of future development of Milan’s urban region. The system of protected areas is a keystone of territorial organization and answers to the need to safeguard the most interesting environments, in terms of landscape and nature, of the large rivers (Ticino, Lambro, Adda), the Groane woods and the large agricultural space in Southern Milan. Growing urbanization led to a percentage of built environment in 2012 equal to 40% (638 km2), with a 2% growth compared to 2000, establishing a situation of compromising, congestion and saturation of soil consumption, such to require new efforts and new commitment to safeguarding free soil, which has become a scarce resource. Moreover, the heavy conditions that environmental primary resources must face is parallel to a now fragmented agricultural landscape and a fringe urban landscape that is wearing away, transforming and even deteriorating. Therefore the safeguard/enhancement of non-built spaces and the introduction of ways to control/regulate soil consumption, in light of sustainable development, have become the main goal of many public plans and politics of organization of human functions on the territory. The metropolitan area can, however, count on a good equipment of protected areas, which represent nowadays the 53% of territory (840 km2, of which 56% in Parco Sud), while free soil outside parks covers up to 7% of territory.

MILAN'S GOALS TO BE A SMART CITY
The main goal of Milan’s Town Hall is to involve the key city developers in the implementation of the Strategy of “Milan Smart City”. At the international level, the city of Milan is already an active member of the main European and global networks that nowadays deal with Smart Cities. At the local level, the Town Hall and Chamber of Commerce are committed to establishing stable partnerships between different entities in the fields of research and social innovation, business and finance.

The continuous dialogue and exchange of practices among communities can give life to a smart, green and inclusive city. The cooperation between public and private allows Milan to compete at the national and European levels to become a reference point for innovation and sustainability. Thus, a consultation process started, connecting institutions, private entities, universities and associations through the creation of six thematic work groups corresponding to the six pillars of Smart Cities (classification by the Vienna University): Smart Economy, Smart Living, Smart Environment, Smart Mobility, Smart People and Smart Governance.

DOSSIER. Milan, the sole candidate for host the 2019 IOC session.

The 2019 IOC session, before to present a bid for the next editions of Olympic Summer Games. The International Olympic Committee confirmed that the Italian National Olympic Committee (CONI) submitted an application to host the 132nd IOC session in 2019 in the city of Milan. The IOC also received many expressions of interest from Brussels, Krakow, Budapest, Istanbul, New Delhi and some US cities.

CONI President proudly launched the challenge. "The idea of Milan 2019 stemmed from the intention to react, as sportsmen. It is a very important project, of great prestige for the whole city and for our nation. Sala and Maroni immediately responded in unison to the request to host this important event, to which all the stakeholders in the world of sport are present. Many of the members of the IOC are Heads of State, presidents of the federations, some of the most important entrepreneurs in the world. Some credible rumours suggested that when Milan was put forth, many backed out. We presented a single dossier, we brought out the best silver of the house, the best of the system. I wish to thank the Federal Presidents who have joined us here, the institutions of the territory, Prefect and the Commissioner and I would like to thank Francesco Ricci Bitti, a giant in the international sports movement".

Mayor of Milan took up the challenge and raised the bar. "We want to show that we are a friendly, welcoming host, where events are welcome and prove our organizational skills. We live in a region that is the birthplace of many champions and has a strong vocation for sports. Milan represents a territory that wants to propose itself as the most suitable venue for hosting events of this kind. It is an opportunity to grasp, for the entire city, for the benefits it will guarantee".

President of Lombardia region stressed the importance of the project. "It is a testimony of the importance that is attributed to sport and its social function. A few weeks ago, we approved a norm that acknowledges movement as a therapy. We have the ambition to prove to the world that Milan is a great opportunity for sport".

Diana Bianchedi ended the series of interventions. "With the City of Milan and the Lombardia region we formed a great team to prepare a winning candidacy. This project stems from the intention to show the international world of sports, and not only, what Milan can do. The dossier starts from the assumption that we are able to prove our skills in organizing great events. It is not easy today, with the existing problems, to have the strength to say we're confident we can make it with these structures is already a winning card. We focused on technological and cultural aspects – like the 500th anniversary of Leonardo da Vinci - and on the beauty of our country. The tours we proposed within the region are aspects that make this project a very strong candidate".

I love projects which build over railway tracks. It's a shame for so much land to remain unaccessable.

The proposals you can see above don't represent any definitive masterplan.
The seven railway yards are a property of Ferrovie dello Stato (the government-owned holding company that manages infrastructure and services on the Italian rail network).
The huge areas will be sold to potential investors / constructors that want to invest in the city, producing projects similar to Porta Nuova or City Life or others.

Does anybody know of any past/existing/future projects for the Quartiere Ippico in the San Siro area?

I know that the Pista di Allenamento Maura in the image has been renovated and is now the Ippodromo 'La Maura', I believe used for most horse racing in Milano today. (http://www.sinottiko.com/gallerie/maura.html)

I also know that the Ippodromo del Trotto has been closed and is up for sale by Snai, with Inter and Milan possibly looking to expand the services of the stadium into that area.

What about the other two tracks? These are huge spaces we are talking about!
