Updates Palazzo delle Scintille / Padiglione 3 (CityLife area)

Designed by architect Paolo Vietti, and opened in 1923, Palazzo delle Scintille is an interesting building with an elliptical dome. It was one of former pavilions of the Milan Exhibition Center.

According to Il Corriere della Sera daily, a decision was finally taken about the future of this building: it is expected to become a new Museum of Contemporary Art.

Updates Apple Piazza del Liberty or Apple Liberty Square
design > Foster and Partners
official thread (more info/pics) > link

As revealed in city planning documents earlier this year, the store (not so far from Piazza Duomo) will be located entirely below the outdoor amphitheater (that will host public events of cultural importance). The sales floor will be accessible by walking down a staircase situated between two waterfalls that form part of the larger fountain. There will also be an elevator available.

Apple Piazza del Liberty will be an open space for all to "have a break, be with friends, and discover new interests", according Apple's retail chief Angela Ahrendts. The store will feature indoor trees and a large screen for "Today at Apple" sessions and other events.

DOSSIER. The Pietrarubba Group: Arnaldo Pomodoro's new sculpture.

The new sculpture created by Arnaldo Pomodoro found a new home in Piazza dell'Ateneo Nuovo at Milano Bicocca University.

"The Pietrarubbia Group" is an ideal tribute to the ancient village of Pietrarubbia. The work consists of six elements: the foundation and the use (fixed and double blocks), the ratio (two swinging and joining doors), the two panels of the Daily and the last two elements, the Absolute, one dedicated to the pain and the other to hope.

Arnaldo Pomodoro is a contemporary Italian sculptor known for his geometric bronze works. His sculptures often contain tears or stalagmite-like aberrations, appearing to be caught in the process of gradually transforming into another object altogether. Born on June 23, 1926 in Morciano, Italy, he went on to study stage design and goldsmithing, eventually moving to Milan where he met avant-garde artists like Lucio Fontana. Pomodoro gained increasing recognition in the 1960s for his work in bronze, and was awarded a coveted solo show at in the 1964 Venice Biennale. The artist continued to exhibit and teach internationally, and in the 1980s, he returned to his work on set and costume design for Italian theater. Today, Pomodoro’s work is in the collections of the Hirshhorn Museum in Washington, D.C., the deYoung Museum in San Francisco, the Guggenheim Museum in New York, and the Art Institute Chicago, among others.

DOSSIER. Milan's Duomo among the world's top landmarks in 2017, according to TripAdvisor.

Milan's Duomo is among the top ten landmarks chosen worldwide by TripAdvisor's users, the popular travel website.

The 108 meters tall cathedral was chosen as the number ten world place in the 2017 TripAdvisor Travelers' Choice Landmarks Awards. "The Milan's Duomo is a much-loved symbol of the city and the most exuberant example of Gothic architecture in Italy. The exterior is an upwardly thrusting collection of pinnacles, elongated statues and buttresses, while the central spire is topped by a golden statue of the Madonna. The view from the roof is the main highlight: on a clear day, the Italian Alps are visible".

Winners were determined using an algorithm that took into account the quantity and quality of reviews for landmarks worldwide over a 12-month period. Overall, 706 landmarks in 82 countries were rated.

The list of the top 10 landmarks in the world is comprised of addresses in Asia, the Middle East, Europe and Latin America, but is conspicuously absent of places in North America.

36 Beatrice D'Este Apartments
Milan | Zone 5

design > LPZR Architetti Associati
developer > ICEF Sviluppi Immobiliari, Abitare Co.

The 7-storey residential complex consists of large loggia, spacious terraces for each apartment. The building, from the rigorous but irregular perspective, seems to be almost detached from the ground thanks to a clever balance game.

Irregular and misaligned openings give motion and rhythm to the façade, enriched by the double-order windows. The use of materials in metal gives luminosity and a suggestive atmosphere to the building.

The new campus will be built near to another existant Bocconi's building (which was designed by Grafton Architects). See the pics below.

However, the new campus U/C will host university's activities, with three buildings dedicated respectively to the MBA and master programs, the executive and administration courses, in addition to a common area for the services. There will also a be a sports and leisure complex with Olympic-size swimming pool, gyms and a fitness centre. DOSSIER. Milan: rethinking the urban mobility.

Traffic, subway network, parkings, bike sharing and everything correlated with the Milanese urban mobility. This week, the City Council begins the debate on the Urban Plan for Sustainable Mobility (PUMS) in Milan, the policies for the next ten years.

Under the lens of the City Councilors, a document of more than 400 pages indicating a long list of priorities: from the extension of the subways, to the insertion of Zone 30; from a new conception of the parking rules, to the establishment of underground railways; from the extension of bike sharing service to a new vision about the Circle Line.

At this stage of the discussion, after the document received a number of comments, municipal Councilors are proposing a first set of amendments: there are altogether 309 amendments, of which 50 already discussed. By the end of this month, there will be another thirty days for comments. Citizens, businesses, parties, associations, trade unions can take part of the discussion. At the end of these two months, the text goes back to the Council for a definitive approval, which according to the junta plans should arrive by November 2017.

But what does PUMS says? It does not give specific detail of all the interventions, but indicates the addresses. As for the subway, the discussion was on the extensions for the M2 to Brugherio and Rozzano, the addition of an M3 stop at San Donato, the forecast for M4 to Corsico and Buccinasco, the arrival of the M5 To Monza and Settimo Milanese, the M1 to Baggio. These interventions add to the need to modernize some lines (such as M2). There is also the hypothesis to build a new line, the M6 (orange) that in the future could link Baranzate and Molino Dorino to Ponte Lambro and Noverasco.

An important chapter is road safety and cycling. The plan is to make the current bicycle network more and more efficient by connecting isolated pieces and giving a hierarchy, creating a sort of chassis of carriageways and inserting new sections that have not yet been designed. No secondary to the development of bike sharing is the goal to get 10,000 bicycles available and 500 stations.

At the same time, the plan includes more zones with a maximum speed limit of 30 km per hour, with the aim of reducing the risks for "weak" road users.

There is also a complete review of the policy regarding parkings, with a new conception of the use of the public space on which cars are at present: it will go to a city with fewer road parking and many more blue strips (especially near the subway stations), while submerged ones will be reserved for intermodal exchange nodes.

The Area C chapter instead seems to be closed. No extensions or modifications are planned, at least until there is a substantial reduction in traffic due to other initiatives. Such as the establishment of the "Low emission zone": a camera control that reduces access to the City of Milan to the most bulky, heavy and polluting means.
