Most overrated building ?

To me it's probabily the Chicago Tribune towers. It's not an ugly building by a long shot, but it's not all that beautiful either - but somehow every publicaton I read about it is raving on and on. Oh well.

The Tribune Tower and the design competition has left it's marks in the history of architecture.

But for me, the most overrated tower was the former WTC. Without the height the towers wouldn't be noticed by most people and after '9/11' people were romancing the towers, making them more beautiful than they were. Yes, they were an icon, but only because of it's location and size. In the beginning the towers weren't that populair:

Quote:
Their size was the subject of a joke during a press conference unveiling the landmarks. Minoru Yamasaki was asked: "Why two 110-story buildings? Why not one 220-story building?" His response was: "I didn't want to lose the human scale." Another joke was that the towers looked like the boxes that the Chrysler Building and Empire State Building came out of.

I agree. It is rather stoic in it's mamouthness but leaning more towards function and a lot less to form. Also, the Empire State Building isnt truly that gorgeous....I feel they are given false beauty just because of their history and fame..

I think you're alone on your choice of the Tribune Tower. It's an amazing tower, and like someone mentioned above, the design competition was equally famous.

Yeah, the Empire State Building is the most overrated... by virtue of being the most famous building on the planet.

The Empire State Bldg is the best skyscraper and possible the most famous. But in this forum, I've seen too much of The Petronas!

Oh c'mon WANCH, you know you'd love them on HK Island right next to the BoC.

I agree about the ESB. The Chrysler building is 1000 times better

Since 9/11 the WTC twins. Before then no where near as many people regarded them as highly as they do now. What happened that day does not give the buildings a better design.

The Aon center, overrated? not much people notice it, and it is the 2nd tallest building in Chicago, the 3rd tallest in the US. The tallest building with a spire or antennea.

Petronas is the most overrated building, IMO.

Definitely the WTC, massive ugly grey boxes, I appreciated its height and significance, but the building was just hideous in my opinion.

If you ever looked at them close up, they actually looked better than from a distance.

Burj Al Arab. Nothing against Dubai, just not a fan of this building.

Actually no! It doesn't fit HK's skyline. Same with The Taipei 101 but the Jin Mao would look nice for HK

IMO, 2IFC. For some reason, I just dont like that building at all. Thats just personal preference though, definitely not in the majority here. I also think ESB is overrated, but not by much. Chrysler, on the other hand, it way underrated despite being a better looking building IMO.

I agree but other cities build twin towers not because they were influnced by WTC. I don't think those who planned Petronas were mimicking the twin towers.

But the WTC is impressive! Especially the cladding which is platinum in color!
