i agree, since we are still growing and improving out from third world country. we take advantage of "american corp." for learning such ways of businesses because its our closest ally and cooperating in our economy. After doing so we can make our own trend and specialty as a Filipino culture and maybe begin to back-off away foreign trends as we grow and tend our own brand.

Thank you, Atmosphere. You understand my point. The problem is that when these companies dominate other countries and cultures, it's called "Americanization", but if you come to America, we actually have so many different stores and restaurants, so many different companies. If it was true Americanization, you would have more small businesses, not all big businesses. We don't love big businesses in America. We love small, local businesses. We just tolerate big businesses. What I see in a lot of Asian countries is people LOVING these companies due to them being "Western" or "American", like Atmosphere said. But these companies give America a bad name. They are a CARTOON of American culture, not real American culture. They disrespect your cultures, take advantage of your loose governmental regulations, they are bad for your health, bad for the environment. Just bad.

I'm a white American and I'm not the least bit jealous. My city is experiencing a boom at the moment, too, albeit much smaller and more controlled. I just hate to see these companies disrespecting you. They are disrespecting you, but you can't see that. They're cheap and tacky; the worst elements of American culture. And that's a shame because America is so much better than how these companies make us look.

If you think these companies have respect for history and different cultures, I must show you one of the worst examples to the contrary, building a Pizza Hut right outside of the pyramids of Giza. No respect.

I don't hate american companies in general, not at all. I just hate it that they pop up EVERYWHERE. I like travelling because I like to see DIFFERENT stuff. If every city has the same shops and restaurants then whats the point of travelling?

Who are you to say that you don't want to have EXACT same shops and resto in every big city in the world? I can not even understand your concern if you are not even Filipino. Are you?
Because diversity is good. No, I'm from Amsterdam. I stated that a few times and we have the same problem. If Filipinos are okay with McDonalds and Paris Hilton shops thats fine, but for me it's a reason not to come

I'm looking forward to this! I would love to see Filipino (or other asian cultures) cafe's and shops in my city. Instead of just American, American, American....

We understand your preferences but then again I don't think you should be opting to travel bigger cities (coz rarely you'll see cities bigger enough w/o these multinational comp) but rather visit the countryside where devt is not yet overly exhausted by these companies all over the globe.

Agree !!! But I would rather rephrase Americanized to commercialized coz we also have lots of Filipino companies that look too commercialized w/c I don't usually approve. I prefer businesses that are personalized, culturally acquainted w/ touches of modernity...

I think it's because the new building is standing too close next to the other one. This would severely impact the views of either building on the affected side and sunlight would not be able to reach the spaces on the ground. If done on a massive scale this would be a catastrophe.

You can read about New York City's 1916 Zoning Resolution.

That's actually good urban planning. Cities are supposed to be DENSE. The way Manila (and other Asian and Latin American cities) builds high-rises so spread out is bad urban planning. They're supposed to be close together. Look at the way the USA and Canada do it.

(neither do people like Syndic). If a place is full of Mc Donalds or Paris Hilton shops/hotels I try to avoid it. It's the same in China as well. People standing in line to get into a newly opened McDonalds because it's 'Western'. I don't get this obsession with these american brands. They are fine, as long as the don't swallow the entire world, which they do.

Seeing most pictures of Manila really makes me want to visit it. But with every McDonalds I see in those pictures, It makes me want to go less. Sadly, Manila is not the only city that is under 'americanisation'. It's sickening. If i'm travelling in Asia I don't want to eat at *** McDonalds, I want to see Asian shops and restaurants. Again, it's not something specific to Manila, it happens in Holland as well.
I understand your sentiment but you have to remember that the Philippines used to be an American colony for 50 years....so, it's not surprising if you see Mcdonalds everywhere in the country. Coca Cola established their first bottling plant in Asia in the Philippines in 1920s.

You're right on good urban planning but Manila has several CBDs, thus you see the developments are all over the metropolis.
