My gues is that they are needed to support the steel walls of the pit. If the pipes weren't there, the wall may bend inwards. When the underground floors are completed pipes are no longer needed.

The pipes are called raker beams. They are used during the excavation process to keep the surrounding walls and soil from collapsing into the site.

Core rising...

They were working on the tower this morning. I was told that they should be at upper Wacker within the next few weeks. 06/09/07

Thanks a lot ZZ-II, that is a great complement to Chicago. I'm always impressed by how positive and unbiased you are. You are just a true to the core skyscraper enthusiast.

Yeah I noticed that too. Chicago is very well prepared and experienced with skyscraper construction process than most US cities I been to. Seattle/Bellevue skyscrapers contructions are almost clean as well but in my opinion, Chicago is still number one for neatness.

I just walked past it yesterday night and I saw it peeking out of the ground a little... a sight we all have been waiting for for months! Sad to say I didn't have my camera on me.

Pardon my ignorance of Chicago buildings, but what is that core that's rising across the river in this image?

Checking elsewhere in these forvms (I only joined a month or so ago), all I can say about that one is:

Waterview and 300 N LaSalle will be very complementary, right across the river from each other!

Remarkably they are wood as - how do say? - casing for the concrete. Is this always used in the USA?
