Yes this is the formwork to hold an opening in the concrete while the jump form rises. The wood will most likely be removed once the concrete is cured.

edit, i think wood would probably be used in any country in fact for concrete forms. Although the form for walls could be aluminum or wood or both.

I believe that wood is used extensively in concrete forms because it is fairly inexpensive, lightweight and can be easily custom worked. Many wood pieces can be reused in later forming, too.

I'm kind of amazed at all of the conduit piping that is set into the concrete, too.

thanks so much for the pics, retrograde. I cant believe how small that piece of land is, and the size of the building going on it.

Its a role model site for future constructions, its so clean even the steel members and rebars look brand new and rust free.

Wow, fantastic design. I think that fits to Chicago very well. It's a bit boxy, but this time it's better that way. The top of that tower looks very nice! The thinness of that tower makes it look even better.

It'll look great once completed indeed.
Still, I can't help but feel very sorry for the people who will live/work in the first 20 stories; especially in the back. I mean, on the pictures above (the first one especially), look at the ridiculously small amount of space between the two already existing towers!!
Waterview's just going to block every photon which can still struggle its way down there at the moment! Why windows in the first place in a case like this one? A white wall might be less frustrating.

For people with a view on the front on the other hand... sweet!
