Thanks for the updates, harryc.

I remember you posted a lot of great pictures on the Trump Tower Chicago thread.

It's a shame Chicago doesn't have any Supertall currently U/C.

My pleasure - I walked past the Sun Times building before, and while it was demo'd for the Trump tower, after we moved it was (and still is) 2 blocks E of me.

This is the view from my lobby, 111 E Wacker is on the Right across the river, my El stop is behind it.

January 29

7:30am - crain tipping.

Very gentle, barely felt it, then I looked up to see the boom and cable springing back and forth - must have been put down just right.

Looks like somewhat of an unconventional way to retrofit the crane base. The good news is that Chicago building department requires structural engineering for that kind of stuff. The bad news is that Bovis Lend Lease has not had good publicity with tower cranes lately (One 57 in NYC and UTS building in Sydney).
Harry, great job with the photos. Please get as many as you can of this operation.

Sistering a column ?

Never seen this done before - probably due to the change in design.

Drilling - these guys LOVE to drill - a constant sound for the last week or so

Sometimes it takes a few trys

It's hard to understand why a structure that was designed and built to be 1000' tall is now being retrofitted (strengthened?) to only be built to 63% of its height. The only explanation that would make sense is that the work would be being done to overcome weakening due to the fact that the concrete has been exposed to six years of Chicago weather. It was supposed to have been enclosed in curtainwall within a few months.

That hybrid structural steel and concrete, elevated support for the tower crane is certainly unusual.

The original design had the tower going up on the NW corner of the site from here on up (work was stopped at the transfer floor. The crane was to be attached to the outside of the remaining tower, thus it's orientation in the shot below.

Nov 2006

The "sistering" of the columns is to augment this part of the tower for a load not initially designed for.

A quick walk around the loop will show many many concrete buildings that are exposed to the elements, this is not an issue.

March 15
Post stress cables arrive for the next floor.

More Scaffolding arrives

Setting up the scaffolding for the next level, assemble on their side the sections are then "tipped" up with the crane.

Happy St Pats day. Should get a shot or two as the local press covers the river turning (brighter) green.
