Agreed. European license plates don't identify you really well. Atleast here you can tell a lot about a person just by looking at the colour scheme or the location on their license plate.

North american license plates are small and weird. Whats with all the colours, pictures and stuff ?? its a license plate, its supposed to be kind of boring.

I mean it must look ridiculous with a classy car and license plates like these with slogans like "Share The Road y'all"

In Hong Kong, there are license plate that are considered lucky or are expensive. Some of them are HK 1997 or just 1, 2 or 6. The owner of "1" license plate belong to the police commisioner in HK. 6 means longevity and was sold for HK $336,000 in an auction!

US plates are taller, European plates are larger.

Those look better! The last time I saw a Mexican license plate were the yellow ones when I was in The Baja back in 2002.

Austria today:

Bregenz, the capital of the westernmost province, Vorarlberg. Vorarlberg's coat of arms is between the code of the municipality (B, in this case) and the rest.

Baden in Lower Austria, again coat of arms of the province.

Salzburg Land (the area around the city of Salzburg)

Perg in Upper Austria

Mödling in Lower Austria.

Between 1947 (!) and 1989 these black plates were used. The code was not sorted by municipalities but by provinces.

(O= Oberösterreich= Upper Austria)

There are special licence plates for certain companies and institutions:

Vehicles of the Federal railways (not the trains, of course, no longer issued since the Federal railways were privatized in 2004 ) have BB for Bundesbahnen, the police either BG (Bundesgendarmerie, running out) or BP (Bundespolizei), the military BH (Bundesheer), the Austrian mail have BP (Bundespost, this also applies to the Postbus AG, a bus company, mainly in isolated rural areas that is run by the mail company.

What will the new ones look like?

Anyway, Germany:

"Live free or die: Death is not the worst of evils." Might have been partly inspired by Patrick Henry's House of Burgesses speech "give me liberty or give me death."

NJ license plates...

I have to disagree with my fellow North Americans. I think NA license plates are tacky while Euro plates look sleek and stylish.

I agree with you, but I also believe NJ license plate is ugly with that yellow background.
