Maithon Alloys plans ferroalloy unit at Vizag

Kolkata-headquartered Maithon Alloys Ltd has homed in on Visakhapatnam, Andhra Pradesh, for its proposed ferroalloy project, Pramod Chaudhury, a senior company official, told Projectmonitor over phone. The project with a capacity of 1.2 lakh tpa will mainly produce ferromanganese and ferrosilicon, essential ingredients for stainless steel production. Maithon Alloys has proposed to undertake this project through a subsidiary in which the parent company will make an investment of Rs 275 crore, he said. The subsidiary will be incorporated soon, he noted.
The official also said that Maithon's new ferroalloy unit in Meghalaya would be ready by March next year. The Rs 80-crore project will have capacity of 28,000 tpa. Currently, the company has an operating unit at Asansol in West Bengal with capacity 94,600 tpa. Once the new projects are implemented, the company's overall ferroalloys capacity will cross 2.4 lakh tpa.
In another development, Maithon Alloys has also approved the creation of a new subsidiary for undertaking investment in the mineral industry. Explaining the rationale, Chaudhury said that the move was to achieve backward integration in the production of ferroalloys. "The new subsidiary will engage itself in a variety of minerals like manganese ore and even coal," he said. Incidentally, Maithon Alloys has divested its 40 per cent holding in Purbanchal Cement Ltd that owns a 500-tpd cement plant in Assam, with a view of sticking to its core business of ferroalloys.

Atlast, this project is getting started ... India's planning to oil shocks ...

Source: http://www.hindu.com/2008/10/20/stor...2050550200.htm

Work on underground caverns begins in Vizag
Santosh Patnaik

It will aid in achieving energy security and avoid oil shocks
--------------------------------------------------------------------------------

The city project is the first to take off

The two other project will be located in Mangalore and Padur

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------

VISAKHAPATNAM: Fighting against all odds, excavation of two underground caverns for strategic storage of crude at Lova Gardens here is in progress.

The caverns, the first-ever in the country, will be engineering marvels as the Rs.375-crore project will involve construction of two giant caverns – 30 meters high (almost 100 feet) and 20 meters wide. They will have a total length of more than three kilometres. The amount of rock to be excavated is about five million tonne.

As part of an exercise to achieve energy security and avoid oil shocks due to emergency situations, the Union Government has set in motion work on three strategic crude storage projects as a buffer stock in Visakhapatnam, Mangalore and Padur (near Udupi) with a total investment of Rs. 2,397 crores. The city project is the first to take off early this year.

Big plans

India plans to raise its strategic storage capacity to 73.3 million reserve barrels – enough to meet for 30 days requirement. The cost of filling crude in the caverns coming up at the three places is estimated at Rs.10,000 crores. The Indian Strategic Petroleum Reserves Limited (ISPRL), a special purpose vehicle set up by the Oil Industry Development Board, is implementing the strategic storage project.

All the three projects will be operational by 2012, ISPRL sources said. Initially, the three projects will have five million tonnes and later it will be enhanced to 15 million tonnes.

EIL has been appointed as the project management consultant for the city project. The civil works are in progress after awarding of the contract to Hindustan Construction Company. The city is credited with having South Asia’s first LPG underground storage cavern with a capacity of 60,000 tonnes.

The city is fast turning into a refinery hub with Hindustan Petroleum Corporation Limited’s Visakh Refinery is being expanded to increase its capacity to 15 million tonnes at a cost of Rs.9,000 to Rs.10,000 crores.

HPCL, ONGC, Mittal, Total and others are establishing a $6 billion petrochemical complex at Achyutapuram. HPCL is also investing Rs.600 crores on single point mooring at the crude oil terminal and Rs.125 crores for mounded bullet storage for LPG.

6 wards to be dusbin free

VISAKHAPATNAM: The Greater Visakhapatnam Municipal Corporation (GVMC) that proposes to take up a dustbin-free solid waste management (SWM) in Wards 6 to 11 from November 1 has launched a massive campaign to create awareness on its implementation. The six wards have been selected as dustbin-free model wards.

As part of the new drive, the corporation intends to provide two dustbins free of cost for separating dry and wet domestic waste to around 30,000 households.
Complaint cell

The separated waste will be collected at the doorstep of the residents. In the six divisions, the dumper bins and any other bin will be removed and garbage heaped will be removed by the workers. Residents may ring up the GVMC call centre on the toll-free number 1913 if they find any garbage heap. “As part of the awareness campaign, teams will visit each household and distribute the bins (red for dry and green for wet garbage) and a chart as a personal invitation to participate and make the programme a success,” says Suresh Bhandari, consultant on SWM to the corporation and Director EnviroSyz that has taken up the programme in public-private participation. The chart contains details on separation of garbage. Some 20 autos fitted with a loudspeaker (which will be used in the collection of garbage later) are being used in the campaign. Besides, nine-member teams that include ward coordinator, crew leader and six self-help group members are going around the wards with banners and other material holding awareness meeting with residents, SHG groups, residents’ welfare associations etc. Thirty selected members of SHGs were given three days of training on implementing the programme.

Schoolchildren are also administered an oath at awareness programmes conducted there. On Wednesday, the campaign was conducted at Nalanda Talent School, SFS School and Vasanta Bala Vidyalayam.

Mr. Bhandari said the campaign would continue in November too. The collection of user charges ranging from Rs.10 to Rs.30 from the residents will be done in a systematic and scientific manner. The collected garbage will be used for making compost and recycling. As part of the agreement, EnviroSyz will bring the know-how, technology and machines, he adds.

Sea cruise service from Vizag to Andamans soon

Quote:
HYDERABAD: Maritime lovers are likely to have an unforgettable and enchanting holiday experience at an affordable fare. If the plans of the Andhra Pradesh Tourism Development Corporation (APTDC) are any thing to go by, you might well be cruising to the Andamans during this summer.
For the first time in the country, a sea cruise service will be launched by the APTDC from Visakhapatnam to the Andaman Islands. The State Government has taken a in-principle decision for the project which would cost about Rs 40-45 crore. Though there are several cruise services being operated in the backwaters of Kerala and Andhra Pradesh, the project will offer the first luxury sea cruise service for tourists in the country.

According to the officials, a cruise will be purchased to accommodate at least 100 tourists to provide a luxurious and comfortable travel to the Andaman Islands. The tourism package includes sight-seeing at the Andamans and return journey. The officials are also mulling over the proposal to operate the cruise liner to the Andaman Islands via Chennai. Though a final decision is yet to be taken, the officials suggested that each traveller has to pay about Rs 1,500 to Rs 2,000 per day for the week-long journey.

APTDC Managing Director Jayesh Ranjan told Express that the services of a private consultant are being hired to study the feasibility of the project which is likely to be completed in a couple of months. ‘‘The proposed project is still in the initial stages and it will take a complete shape only after the completion of the feasibility study,’’ he said. The sea cruise liner will be the first of its kind to be introduced by a Government organisation that promises a memorable experience at an affordable cost.

Call to develop Vizag as a container hub

Visakhapatnam, Nov. 19 Visakhapatnam should be developed as a transshipment container hub on the east coast to make containerisation cost-effective, according to Mr Sriram Ravi Chander, Chief Operating Officer of Visakha Container Terminal.

He was delivering a lecture on the potential of the container terminal here at the two-day conference — East Coast Maritime Summit 2008 — which concluded here on Wednesday. It was jointly organised by the Vizagpatam Chamber of Commerce and Industry and Exim India’s Fairplay Exposition group.

He said it would be much cheaper if the container cargo emanating from Kolkata and Chennai could be routed through Vizag, to reach the East Asian nations. “On the east coast, Vizag is the ideal hub for container cargo,” he said.

Coastal shipping

Capt. Vijaya Gopal, the CEO of Seaways Shipping, spoke at length about the constraints plaguing coastal shipping in India and how they should be tackled.

He observed that logistics cost in India was as high as 25 per cent of the GDP as against only eight per cent in the developed countries.

He argued that the cost could be brought down only if the Union Government encouraged coastal shipping and inland waterways and reduced dependence on road transport.

Logistics park mooted in APSEZ

Quote:
Visakhapatnam, Nov. 20

The Visakha Container Terminal Pvt Ltd can set up a logistics park in the Andhra Pradesh Special Economic Zone at Atchyutapuram in Visakhapatnam district, as land and other requisites will be provided by the Andhra Pradesh Industrial Infrastructure Corporation (APIIC), Mr B.P. Acharya, Chairman and Managing Director, has suggested.

He made the suggestion at a review meeting in the APSEZ on Thursday after visiting some of the units in the SEZ, Jawahar Pharma City and the Brandix Apparel Park.

Mr Acharya observed that Visakha container terminal had all the requisite facilities for the exporters in the APSEZ and others, and they should patronise the terminal here instead of routing their cargoes through Chennai or Ennore.

‘Bright prospects’

Mr Acharya said the scenario was bright for the APSEZ, the pharma city and the Brandix apparel park. “Four units have started operations in the APSEZ and four more are under construction.

In the pharma city too, 14 units have gone into production and 13 more getting ready. Some of the units in the Brandix apparel park are ready and already 3,000 have got employment,” he said.

Pilkington unit begins trial production: Pilkington Automotive India Pvt Ltd, which set up a unit to manufacture windscreens for vehicles started trial production on Thursday.

Expressing happiness at the early construction of the unit, Mr Acharya advised the management to provide jobs to the locals to the maximum extent.

Rs 80-cr investment

Mr Stephan Rosebrock, Director, said the unit would manufacture roughly half a million windscreens per annum and initially it would cater only to the export market and subsequently the windscreens would be supplied to the OEMs in India. He said roughly Rs 80 crore would be invested in the first phase on the unit here.

Mr K.V.V. Sathi Reddi, Engineer-in-Chief, APIIC, said the APSEZ here had come up in a very satisfactory manner and all the infrastructural facilities were in place.

“It is the largest multi-product SEZ in the country and one of the best developed,” he said.

Mr Sushil Mulchandani, the Deputy Chief Operating Officer of the Visakha container terminal, Mr P. Eshwar Reddy, Chief Executive Officer of the Ramky Pharma City (India) Ltd, Mr Ch.V.V.S. Prasad, Zonal Manager (Projects), APIIC, and others participated in the review meeting.

ACA-VDCA Cricket Stadium Gets Floodlights

VISAKHAPATNAM: The modern ACA-VDCA stadium at Pothinamallayyapalem here will soon have another important facility added to it. Floodlighting, which facilitates day-night matches, are being provided at the stadium. Three masts have been erected on Saturday and the fourth and final mast would be in place by Sunday.

Once the floodlights are in place in full measure, the stadium, which hosted ODIs so far and earned the appreciation of all visiting teams for the facilities available there, would be ready to host Test matches. The International Cricket Council made floodlights at a cricket stadium mandatory to host Test matches and ACA quickly got into action and went for floodlights at its prestigious stadium.
Massive towers

Phillips Electronics India limited bagged the Rs.5 crores contract and work commenced six weeks ago. Santhi Enterprises of Chennai is executing the work of erecting the masts at the four corners of the stadium. A lot of precautions have been taken to position the cranes to lift and place the masts. Each mast will have 98 bulbs. Each mast will have a control room. The luminance would be according to international standards. Once the erection of masts was completed, the work on connecting cables to the panels would be taken up. Final testing is expected to be carried out by November-end and by mid-December the entire system should be in place.

“It is going to be a New Year gift to the people of Visakhapatnam”, said vice-president of ACA and VDCA P.R. Narayanaswami.

President of VDCA D.V. Subba Rao, secretary K. Parthasaradhi, and other office-bearers thanked the ACA for providing floodlights at the stadium.

Chairman of Visakhapatnam Port Trust Ajeya Kallam, who is a former president of VDCA, is expected to visit the stadium in a few weeks to assess the need to provide other facilities.

Two generators of 625 KV capacity each would be provided to light the floodlights. A sum of Rs. 70 lakhs has to be spent on the generators.

Vizag hell bent on driving out software companies
Quote:
VISAKHAPATNAM: Software companies at Rushikonda and the government agencies are on collision course following the action of the AP Industrial Infrastructure Corporation (APIIC) in suspension of power supply immediately.

The APIIC (special projects zone) informed the Superintending Engineer, EPDCL, in a letter on November 21 that power supply be disconnected under Section 19 (3) of SEZ rules, 2006 due to construction of buildings in the IT SEZ without necessary approvals.

The APIIC contention is that the entrepreneurs holding Letters of Approval (LoA) are entitled to set up units in the processing area of SEZ and commence production within a year from getting the approval.
Unauthorised

In a recent communication, the Development Commissioner of Visakhapatnam Special Economic Zone (VSEZ), who is also in-charge of 100 per cent EoUs, declared constructions without LoA as unauthorised.

The notices issued by VSEZ and APIIC were served to eight companies viz. Colorchips Entertainments and Media Ltd, Symbiosys Technologies, Sankhya Technology, Mahathi Software, Navayuga Infotech, Soft Pro Systems, NuNet Technologies and CAN Infotech. Some of them have completed their constructions and employed hundreds of techies on their payrolls.

Highly placed sources told The Hindu that the EPDCL SE wrote individual letters dated November 29 to the software companies referring the instructions received from APIIC and asked them to produce proof of LoA within 15 days failing which he threatened to stop power supply.
Confronting situation

The promoters of the units, APIIC and VSEZ are on a confrontation ever since the Ministry of Commerce issued a notification announcing an IT SEZ at Rushikonda last year.

The promoters, who bought the lands at Rushikonda two and half years ago on payment of Rs.10 lakh an acre, refused surrender of sale deeds and convert their status as owner to lease-holder.
Petition

Their petition for denotifying the IT SEZ is under consideration of Ministry of Commerce as they contended that they bought and began constructions before the said notification and the APIIC had produced wrong information stating that it was the owner and in possession of the land in question.

“We will be forced to subject the SEZ notification to legal scrutiny if our demand is not considered.

We are harassed with threat of blackout after developed the facilities with out hard-earned money,” Rushikonda IT Park Association vice-president Naresh Kumar said.
these guys are such idiots. don't they realize that the real estate is doing well in rishi-konda because of these companies. now they want to act tough with the companies and cut power off and drive them away. What are they trying to do? send vizag back to the stone ages??. This looks to be heading towards a certain debacle and i doubt other software companies will set up shop here.

SEZ status irks Rushikonda IT cos

Quote:
Visakhapatnam, Dec. 4 Many industrial units –whether in the IT sector or others – wish to be situated in special economic zones, as it entitles them to a number of incentives and benefits, but some of the IT companies here – those situated on the two hillocks near Rushikonda beach near here – are finding it very irksome. They have appealed to the Union Commerce Ministry to de-notify the two SEZs.

It may be noted that the State Government allotted lands to IT companies on the two hillocks near the Rushikonda beach, on the Visakhapatnam-Bhimli road, and subsequently they were notified as SEZs.

The pace of progress has been very slow for many of the companies due to the economic recession and other factors, but the SEZ notification has also become a thorn in their flesh. Till now only two or three major IT companies such as Kenexa, or Symbiosis, have started operations and the others are going slow. They are disenchanted with the State Government, and the AP Industrial Infrastructure Corporation, for initially giving them land on payment of Rs 10 lakh an acre on ownership basis and subsequently converting the area into a special economic zone.

They cannot own the land in an SEZ, as the stipulations do not permit it. Therefore, as the Vizag-Bhimli beach road is one of the most sought-after stretches in the city, there is little incentive for these companies to go ahead with the projects if they are not given ownership of the land. To make matters worse, the authorities have also served notices of some of the IT units for constructing their units without the necessary approvals and threatened to cut power supply.

The Rushikonda IT Park Association contends that the entrepreneurs have been duped by the APIIC and initially they were allotted sites on payment of Rs 10 lakh an acre and they had also paid Rs 5 crore to the Visakhapatnam Urban Development Authority for development charges.

They are aggrieved that after investing huge amounts and developing the area the Government was putting them to trouble, converting it into an SEZ without their consent, and creating additional problems for them in addition to the economic recession.

The association is planning to move the court, if the State Government does not change its stance and make it easier for them. They have also appealed to the Union Commerce Ministry to intervene in the matter.

Flyover proposal reviewed

Quote:
VISAKHAPATNAM: The proposal for construction of a flyover bridge at Asilmetta was reviewed at a meeting convened by the Commissioner of Greater Visakhapatnam Municipal Corporation, B. Sreedhar, in his chambers here on Saturday.

The meeting was convened to discuss various problems that would arise during construction and steps to overcome the same. The flyover was essential to ease ever growing traffic in the city, Mr. Sreedhar said. The Commissioner wanted nomination of representatives from the BSNL, Transco, Traffic Police and RTC to the coordination Committee for implementation of the project. The project works would be divided into the four zones and work of one zone would be taken up at one time, project officials said.

Mobilization advances given to the agencies selected for work

2,000 structures at Kancharapalem likely to be affected by BRTS work

VISAKHAPATNAM: Even as the Chief Minister is scheduled to lay the foundation stone for a flyover from Asilmetta to the DRM’s office that is part of the Bus Rapid Transit System (BRTS), steps are afoot to take up the BRTS works also on the two corridors.

The Greater Visakhapatnam Municipal Corporation (GVMC) has finalized tenders for the Pendurthi and Simhachalam transit corridors for the BRTS under the Jawaharlal Nehru National Urban Renewal Mission (JNNURM).

The BRTS is aimed at providing cost-effective and efficient mass transportation system in urban areas plying buses on dedicated lanes.

According to officials, agreements have been entered into and advances given to the agencies selected for the work to mobilize labour, materials and machines.

As per the government orders under engineering, procurement and construction contracts, a 10 per cent mobilization advance is given to the agencies.

Compensation package

The agencies are involved in mobilizing men and material for the work right now. The two corridors cost about Rs.160 crores each.

The flyover from Asilmetta to the DRM’s office forms part of the 22.6-km Pendurthy to Dwarakanagar via NAD corridor.

It costs an additional Rs.60 crores.

Around 2,000 structures at Kancharapalem are likely to be affected by the widening of the road for taking up the BRTS corridor work.

The Town Planning Department is finalising a package for compensating affected persons.

Officials see no reason for not taking up work on the corridor in parts that do not come in the 3-km stretch in the Kancharalapalem area.

The company selected for the Pendurthy corridor GKC Sadbhavana Engineering Company has already submitted its design. GVR infrastructure that has been awarded the Simhachalam corridor is also expected to give its designs soon.

After a scrutiny by its consultants the designs will be approved by the officials of the GVMC.

The two companies will get two years for completion of the work after the designs are approved.
