Mega special economic region mooted for Vizag: Manmohan VISAKHAPATNAM: Prime Minister Manmohan Singh said here on Saturday that the Government of India was holding discussions with foreign investors to explore the possibility of setting up `mega special economic regions' in the country with Visakhapatnam being one of the potential locations. "By developing Visakhapatnam into a mega special economic region, investments to the tune of 10 billion dollars (more than Rs. 45,000 crores) can be attracted....". The Prime Minister, who earlier launched a massive project to expand the capacity of Visakhapatnam Steel Plant from 3.6 million to 6.3 million tonnes at a cost of Rs. 8,692 crores, said the United Progressive Alliance (UPA) Government would favourably consider revival of Hindustan Shipyard Limited (HSL) and Bharat Heavy Plates and Vessels (BHPV), both of which had been in the red for the past several years. we will once again have a world-class shipbuilding industry in Vizag..." Union Minister for Steel Ram Vilas Paswan said that the Vizag Steel Plant would receive `mini ratna' status. Mr. Paswan also announced the setting up of a steel research and development centre at Hyderabad with an investment of Rs.50 crores He said miniratna status would give autonomy to VSP in decision-making. At the stadium, the Prime Minister launched the Jawaharlal Nehru National Urban Renewal Mission (JNNURM) under which drinking water and drainage works would be taken up. He promised support to road development work in the city at a cost Rs. 100 crores. The area up to Kakinada on one side and Srikakulam on the other could be developed into a centre of new business, and wanted the city to become the `Jewel of Coromandel coast'. Coastal corridor gets nod: YSR VISAKHAPATNAM: The Prime Minister Manmohan Singh has agreed to the proposal for setting up of an industrial corridor between Visakhapatnam and Kakinada, said the Chief Minister Y.S. Rajasekhara Reddy. The Chief Minister disclosed this at a meeting after laying the foundation stone for a building for the Indo-German Institute of Advanced Technology (IGIAT) at the Industrial Estate at Kancharapalem, here on Saturday. The corridor would spur industrial development of the city and the region besides opening up vast employment opportunities. The Prime Minister had launched development projects Rs. 45,000 crores in Visakhapatnam alone earlier in the day. The capacity of the Visakhapatnam Steel Plant would be enhanced, and soon NTPC Simhadri and HPCL would also go on the expansion mode. Dr. Rajasekhara Reddy said that there was also a plan to set up a mega petrochemical complex in Visakhapatnam. All these projects would change the face of the city. Referring to IGIAT, he said that the institute would provide the much-needed technical competence to students passing out of engineering colleges and technical institutes to improve their employability. The German Government had advanced Rs. 16 crores for the provision of infrastructure at the institute. The State Government had allocated five acres of land and the Gayatri Vidya Parishad had made an initial investment of Rs. 40 lakhs for the project. according to our system, if a train travels 60km/hr, it will be classified as super-fast. i say that's primitive thinking; they're still living in the stone age.

BARC gets land for its biggest campus near Vizag
VIZAG: The Andhra Pradesh Industrial Infrastructure Corporation Limited (APIIC) has handed over 2,080 acre land in the Special Economic Zone coming up at Atchutapuram here, to the Bhaba Atomic Research Centre (BARC) for its new campus. About 2,500 acres more, including 800 acres for residential quarters for BARC employees, will be acquired by the APIIC. This proposed branch of the country’s premier atomic energy research establishment will be bigger than the BARC headquarters at Mumbai. As of now, compound wall construction of the proposed BARC branch began, according to APIIC zonal manager (Projects) D Haranadha Reddy. The zonal manager told this paper that APIIC was acquiring 10,000 acre land for the SEZ in addition to the 9,200 acres which was under its control. Already, 1,000 acres had been allotted to Sri Lankan textile company Brandix. As regards Pharma City at Parawada, out of 27 bulk drug manufacturers which were allotted land, six companies are about to begin the construction work. APIIC is taking steps to facilitate the setting up of industries in the least possible time while providing the required infrastructure facilities with the help of Industrial Infrastructure Development Fund and Critical Industrial Infrastructure Funds. Necessary concessions and incentives were being given in accordance with the industrial policy to attract entrepreneurs, Haranadha Reddy said. Last edited by bommasaniv; May 26th, 2006 at 11:59 AM. |

it has pretty much the same stuff as the above articles, but def Vizag getting a campus that is larger than the headquarters in Mumbai, for BARC, is a thing for everybody to be proud of. economically and military-wise Vizag's importance in growing and with the current industrial activity in this area, there is no doubt Vizag will be a mega-city, in terms of it's contribution to Indian economy, by 2015. |

Not all over yet for VW and Vizag...
Hyderabad, May 30: The German auto major Volkswagen (VW) has denied that it has plans to set up its automobile plant in Nasik, Maharashtra. VW officials recently wrote to the State government denying reports that the company plans to move to Maharashtra and reiterated that it was engaged in a dialogue only with the Andhra Pradesh government. However, VW also made it clear that the project will not come up before 2009.
Official sources told this correspondent that VW officials responded to the State government’s concerns after there were media reports claiming that VW had chosen Maharashtra over Andhra Pradesh. A week after Prime Minister Manmohan Singh visited Germany and met representatives of the automobile company on April 22, media reports from national capital had claimed that a VW delegation told the Indian officials that they have chosen Nasik to set up their car plant. Sources said that on Chief Minister Y.S. Rajasekhar Reddy’s instructions, principal secretary (industries) Lakshmi Parthasarathy wrote to VW seeking clarification. She also referred to the preparation of a draft Memorandum of understanding and working out the financial model based on economic incentives sought by the German company
