For me traveling to different cities, i cant help but feel that there is more to see in London's museums and they are nearly all free. When visiting other cities i had to decide which museum i wanted to visit as i couldn't afford to just have a quick browse in all of them, as not everything in them is interesting to everyone, and generally there is something similar in London. The only other city Ive been to where the museums are as impressive and varied is Paris, but again its expensive.

London has great museums indeed. In a way it's even frustrating it has so many, as you need to leave a lot out - when I visited I had to ignore the V&A, Tate Britain, Natural History etc. because I only had that much time.

From experience though the largest part of the spending done during a trip is on food, entrances were never a problem even when traveling as an Eastern European student (the only exception was, funnily enough, Britain - when it asks for money, it's a small fortune ).

Where free museums genuinely make a big difference, it's for the locals. Myself I had this privilege too - as a student in Bucharest one of the best thing was going sometimes even once a week to the wonderful collection of great Romanian art at the National Museum. This wouldn't have been possible without my Beaux-Arts student ID, which granted me free pass. The mere thought that students at other disciplines would not get free entry just a reduction makes me sad... Not to mention the general public.

Will post links to the virtual tours of the main Bucharest museums sometime later.
