Plaza Tunku Yaacob Houses First Five-star Hotel In Kedah

ALOR SETAR, July 3 (Bernama) -- Plaza Tunku Yaacob at the Sultan Abdul Halim Highway, opposite Menara Alor Setar, here, will be given a RM300 million facelift, incorporating a five-star hotel, the first in the state.

Menteri Besar Datuk Seri Azizan Abdul Razak said the plaza, abandoned for 28 years, would be revived in two phases -- reinforcing the building structure and developing the vacant land nearby.

He said the plaza would also have three-star budget hotels to provide a choice to certain guests, a convention centure and an international standard shopping complex similar to that found in Kuala Lumpur and Singapore.

The project slated to start next year is a tripartite joint venture among Belleview Bina Sdn Bhd, Bina Darulaman Berhad and Kedah State Development Corporation.

"The state government is optimistic with the initiative to revive the plaza and is confident to complete it within the specified timeframe -- about three years after approvals were received from relevant government agencies and local authorities.

"The State Development Corporation will hold 20 per cent stake in the joint-venture entity. Sufficient cashflow to finance the redevelopment will be provided by Belleview," he told reporters.

Azizan hoped government-linked companies in Kedah and local contractors would be given the opportunity to participate in the plaza reconstruction work.

"The project will also provide opportunities to Bumiputera petty traders to venture into retail business and operate food outlets at the food court inside the commercial complex.

"Kedah will have a new landmark that will change the image of the Alor Setar City and will generate businesses for government-linked companies," he added.

First phase (on former land planned by Berjaya Group) will start soon as early 2010, while the second phase just waiting approval from local authority since old matter regarding uncompleted shopping complex needed to be resolved first.

The developer Belleview has shown their committment on this projects and eagerly to develop both phases simultanously.

wow nice design. Berjaya Group has recently bought a land near the river in malacca to be developed into a hotel and commercial complex. Hopefully it wil b something like this.

looking at the model design, i don't think this will be reconstruct anytime soon. this building is an white elephant for 28 years, maybe another 12 years to go before we could see something. plus, initial design specs already outdated, we're talking about 80s. better off destroy it & use the land as "dataran" or cultural site. there is no high purchasing power in Alor Star.

a 5-star hotel in alor setar?? that will be another failure. they gotta check the existing hotels occupancy. a budget etc tunehotels may be helpful but certainly not a 5-star. i don't think "big spender" will pick alor star for their shopping spree while Penang just nearby.

did you now about SULIHH (refinery) project? this is a damn big project for kedah (usd10bil)..i heard rumours that the project would be delayed due to some issue..(anyone knows the status please update)

talking about 5-star hotel with a super urban shopping mall to be built in alor setar. this was in the list with the SULIHH project (i guess)..if SULIHH project execute..no problem with the 5-star hotel..

i've been working in oil & gas industry about 10 years..from my xperience..this is a good prospect of project...it's very impresive to attract peoples..not even one 5-star hotel can be built..it could be more..

hope the project is still on track..so kedahan will see the impact..InsyaAllah..

Agree to that. Our close proxmity to Penang just halt the city from growing.

Unless u have found an oil well or something or gold mine or sea port.

Frustrated...the proposed Berjaya Hotel near Jalan Kanchut, Alor Setar is still invisible..
During my school years, I always count the number of tall buildings around Alor Setar.. I know its growing, but very slow..Please do something. Love Alor Setar so much!!

P/S If u wanna count tall buildings, I suggest u go to Pantai Bersih at Butterworth and start counting tall buildings on Penang Island! Penang also belong to Kedah what!!!
