Bad memories? This was the Grollo Tower approved in Melbourne......the first was to be 680 mt. and then the spike in Dubai rejected it.....I hope this tower is completed and I will always look at it...maybe one day visit it and think it could have been here in Melbourne.....Do a good job Doha...you will have a world class building !

Remember the Doha Tower that supposed to rise there? Apparently the project will rise from ashes after 2 years of being on hold.

Doha tower project work to resume
03.11.12

Lusail Real Estate Development Company (LREDC) has relaunched its Doha Convention Centre Tower project after a lapse of more than two years. The company has invited prequalification bids for the 112-storey project. The last date to bid is December 11. The tower will have a gross built-up area of 219,000 sq m above grade and 110,000 sq m below-grade for parking facilities. It rises from a 55m x 55m base at the ground floor with the four sides of 552m-high shear glass facades sloping inward. It also has a 400m tall concrete structure plus 150m steel helix structure sheathed in a glass façade. Work on the project was earlier halted following fears that it could disrupt the take off and landing of flights in Doha. The Doha Convention Centre and Tower project is located in the West Bay Area and will have a host of hotel facilities and apartments, in addition to retail spaces. The convention area itself will be 100,000 sq m in size, while the tower and centre will include 65,000 sq m of gross office floor space and 25,000 sq m of retail area, reports said. Lusail Real Estate Development Company is owned by Qatari Diar Real Estate Investment Company. – TradeArabia News Service

Unfortunately it seems like the tower was redesigned. This got posted on the www.frederickgrier.blogspot.com. I encourage you to read the description attached to the renders HERE.

The tower's site in december 2011. The foundation waits ready for the tower.

I know three other towers that already have their foundations finished that should also restart

I hate the top and the base, but the body is nice.

Wow, this is awesome news. And the new design is far better than the old one.

i completely agree, the previous one had such a big crown, it was a shame. now this one has a reasonably tall crown. just normal size of proportions, i like it a lot more. i just hope the overall size didn't change, so instead of just cutting the crown off, i hope they raise everything to fit the new design but same or similar height. (the render is promising a good height though)

The new design's shit. It must've been redesigned by the same person who came up with Azerbaijan's Turd Tower.

Not sure which one you are reffering to. Last time this project was alive this design was being shown.

What I posted is not official anyway. We don't know if the project design has been changed for 100%. So there is slight chance the one above may still be the right one. The new design has been posted on the Qatar ssc subforum. I later found out that the render comes from the blog of the guy that claims to be one of the architects taking part in the redesigning process but still, its not confirmed anywhere. Even murphy/jahn the designers have old design on their official site.

I think the new design is generally worse than the old one. It's quite confusing since the body of the tower as you said seems really good and may turn out great in reality. I also like that there isn't a huge unusable crown there. But unfortunately style of the crown and base ruins it a bit with the tacky fashion many dubai towers represents. Sphere in a cage? Not so sure about it. It still not a bad tower but I would rather have huge unusable crown on a nice tower then these two out of place spheres.

That one was much better, but the very old one was pretty much Aspire Tower.

I was thinking the same thing. Who would have thought we could have built such great looking buildings 30-40 years ago.
