If you have already seen Egaleo extension, there is nothing new.

There will be 2 more stations (Nomismatokopio and Haidari) towards the end of 2008.

I have one question. I was in Athens years ago. I don't have a clue where it was but I was at a metro station. Do you have to know where i can find more pictures of Monastiraki or Omonia metro stations. I have even tried to recognize something from flickr once. The upper level. Maybe it wasn't any of those stations. It was an old station. Roundish slightly dome like architecture. A little gritty , some young bums sat on the street outside and someone was selling cds. Anyone recognize anything from this. I bet it looks half as good when they inevitably repaired it for the 2004 olympics

I am a big fan of the Athens Metro. I especially like the walk-through trains that are used on some of the lines:

My impression of the tram was formed when I saw it sitting at a traffic signal just like a bus:

I suppose the tram is reasonably fast where it runs along the cost and encounters no cross traffic; however, it seems quite slow within the center of Athens.

Some foreigners think that Athens Metro was built for the 2004 Olympic Games. Wrong. Its first tracks were laid back in 1869 between Piraeus and Thisseion and it was the first railway in Greece. The first underground segment was put into service in 1895 between Monastiraki and Omonoia but its end station was not underground.

Old Omonoia station in 1925:

That’s why Budapest has the record of being the first city on the European continent to get an underground metro in 1896.

So I decided to add the inauguration dates of each station on Robert Schwandl’s map. Some stations have 2 different dates because the original station was built on a slightly different location from the present one. All stations in line 1 underwent a massive refurbishment between 2003-2004.

Data about line 1 as well as the old photo were taken from www.isap.gr.

Now that we know about the past, let’s take a look into the future of Athens Metro. In the next 2 years we’ll have 12 new stations:

Ilissos and Psalidi in line 1
Anthoupoli, Peristeri, Ilioupoli, Alimos, Argyroupoli and Helliniko in line 2
Haidari, Holargos, Nomismatokopio and Ag. Paraskevi in line 3

Then we' ll have an underground station at Kaminia, probably in 2011.

The western extension of line 3 is not expected to be ready before 2015.

As for line 4, there is no schedule yet, but works will probably start in 2010 and last 6-7 years.

There are also plans to extend line 1 towards the north, with 4 new stations in 2015 and further 2 in 2018, but that extension is not shown on this map.

We cannot consider it as the oldest metro, because there was no underground station until 1930. There have been other cities with underground tunnels without stations before 1895.

Athens has a decent system now- it will be great when the extensions are finished.

Yesterday Public Works Minister Giorgos Souflias announced an ambitious plan to expand Athens Metro. According to recent studies, Athens needs a network of 8 lines, 220 kms long with 200 stations. When is it going to be ready? Souflias said 20 years were not enough.

Lines 5-8 are completely new and have never been discussed before. They are enough to make metrophiles like me daydream.

The following map (in Greek) is not very detailed, it gives us nonetheless an idea about future developments. Lines surrounded by a gray shadow are presented for the first time.

My objection is that too many lines pass through Athens center. IMO only line 4 can easily be added to the 3 lines that already cross Athens downtown. 3 more lines would require an engineering miracle. Just imagine 4 lines meeting at Monastiraki and 4 lines at Panepistimio.
Moreover, several routes overlap, at least partially. I hope that new lines will be better adjusted to the needs of the city.

Well, now I have a reason to live a long life. I’ll try to drive carefully, do regular check ups and have sex only with a condom, so that I survive to enjoy Athens with 8 metro lines.
