No turnstiles, so there's no physical control to enter the platform. I guess the origin of the name is that you pay "to preserve your honor", although in reality most people pay so as not to get caught in a random control.

Ah, ok. I´ve always found that system a bit odd, since people who don´t want to pay simply walk past the point and that´s it.

I much prefer the system in Spain, France and the UK with fare barriers.
It makes life more difficult for the people who don´t want to pay.

Well, exactly. As I remember from the days I was living in Athens a lot of people abused the system and were, literally, free riders (I admit it, I did it sometimes too!). I would prefer a barrier system like in the Tube in London. I am not sure if I remember correctly but I think there was a debate whether to introduce a barrier system in Athens Metro recently. Can anyone of you guys in Athens, give us some more info on that?

ps: Awesome new stations. Well done.

According to the 1963 plan, Athens would have had 14 lines totalling 92.4km and 113 stations. It would have cost US$118 million to build the whole lot.

How would it look like? Maybe like a rough map I made here.

Regarding the ticketing system, while standing on a platform in the Athens Metro, I've encountered an officer who was checking tickets.

It looks like the opening of Aghia Marina station, which was originally scheduled for September 2013, has been pushed back to November:

This is my initial impression of the 1963 plan, and how the regulatory plan would blend in if it all went to plan.

Compare with this image from To Vima via the September 8th, 2013 message:

Only when I get the positions of all the stations is when I am able to turn it into a diagram.

That was a stupid plan; luckily it never materialized. In order to be viable, a metro line has to have a decent length, e.g. 10 kms. Those short lines would never attract enough passengers.

Very interesting. Now they plan this U-shaped line 4 between Galatsi and Panormou. I still think the latter one should be integrated into an own line 5 going further west like it is shown in your draft. Line 4 should be an own line without branch, having e real orientation north-south. Athenes is not a city for having branch-lines, because it is denseley populated also in the outkirts. Maybe as there is not much money at the moment, they should extend line 2 and 3, but those additional two lines are necessary anyway.

Kind regards

In June 2014 will start the redevelopment of central boulevards of the city center. Among other things there will be an expansion of the tram line from the Syntagma sq. to down town. Here are some images showing the tram:
