My photo updates on the Athens Metro Extensions of the second half of 2013 as published in the Hellenic Agora forums. .
______________________________

Athens Metro - Critical Photo Update - Extension from Ilioupolis to Hellenikon and Aghia Marina

There are two sections here. The first, is related to the four new stations commisioned on line 2 the red line) in its eastbound extension towards Hellenikon. These are pictures that I took during my visit with our co-forumer Prisma on 25 July 2013. You can read a few details from the English section of the Athens Metro (Attiko Metro) website by clicking HERE.

My view: These are luxurious stations, albeit almost identical in terms of their layout, once you've seen one, it's like you've seen them all. In general, this metro line goes under Vouliagmenis Avenue, with entrances resembling to pavilions located on both sides of the six-lane avenue and creating a very good contrast with the rest of the built environment there...

The images that follow are from all four stations which, as I said previously, are identical in terms of layout with some only some minor details being visible from station to station.

Now this section is the new Aghia Marina Station on the westbound extension of line 3 (blue line). You can read the details in English from the Athens Metro (Attiko Metro) website by clicking HERE. Notably, this station is different than the rest and is equally large and impressive with the rest of the stations in the network.

As most of the Greek visitors know, the next extension to be given to the public will be the one from Aghia Marina to the port of Piraeus. Construction work has already started and let's hope I will be there as well as the other members of the Hellenic Agora SSC crew to take pictures.
Also, I believe that after the completion of this station we are ready to welcome visitors from outer space witout them feeling too... alienated from their own environment. Just scroll down to find out why .

Please tell me that is some type of sensor and not somebody's IPod that fell inside the display case.

It's has to be a sensor or a sensor LCD display of some kind, there is also something that looks like a white connection cable attached to it as much as I can see...

L3 extension to Piraeus is expected to be ready in 2 - 3 years as the excavation and digging goes as planned. The interesting news will be with the brand new line 4 which is in an advanced pre-construction stage with the major engineering studies being at the final stage. I wouldn't expect it under normal circumstances to be ready before 2022 but now there exists a substantial know-how on the nature and the quality of the quality of the subsoil so no serious technical difficulties and delays should be expected.

Progress report of Piraeus extension, today (photos by me).

This is Aghia Varvara station. The TBM is scheduled to arrive here in 2-3 months:

Korydallos station. The TBM will reach it (hopefully) 8 months after Aghia Varvara:

Nikea station. The TBM will be here 5 months after Korydallos:

Last week’s pictures show the 3 more advanced stations. Unfortunately, the other 3 stations are much behind in progress. This is Maniatika, where some houses had to be pulled down in order to make space for the construction site. Their owners opposed expropriation, hence the delay:

The most difficult station is Piraeus, which will be constructed under this road section:

The challenge will be to keep sea water away from the station, while maintaining the 6 traffic lanes throughout construction period.

The terminal station, Dimotiko Theatro, will feature some of these archaeological relics:

The problem is that when archaeologists get involved, things get nasty for construction works.

To recap, here is the map with the scheduled arrival dates of the TBM:

The above map shows existing and future tram network in the southern part of Athens. The thick red line shows tram lines already in use. Piraeus extension was supposed to be ready in 2015, but works have not really started yet. As for the other extensions, they are still under planning and nobody can predict when (and whether) they are completed.
