Stick to the facts. Greece is virtually bankrupt. It is kept solvent by huge emergency loans. There has nothing been exaggerated.

A lot of loans will be needed to keep the metro project afloat. In the worst case scenario we could see CLOSURES*!

*Unless they buy the 1967 tube stock to make demand ends meet.

Reminds me of the Keramikos station and some others.

Why don't they try to design something more original? It's not bad, not at all, but I would like to see something new.

Three new works of art were added recently:

Halandri

Aghios Dimitrios

Monastiraki

I was soooo impressed by this picture, that I decided to use it as my avatar! The problem is that passengers do not look upwards, so they miss this masterpiece.

Now there are totally 30 works of contemporary art in lines 2 and 3 and a few dozens in line 1. The latter were added during the refurbishment in the years 2002-2004, but have not been sufficiently presented in this thread. Here are some of them:

Pefkakia

Nea Ionia

Marusi

Kato Patisia

Kifisia

Irini

Neo Faliro

Aghios Nikolaos

Attiki

Petralona

You like to hear it, right TheKorean? The second series of rolling stock is Korean-Japanese. The first one is German-French.

My favorite Athens' metro artwork is this, at Larisa Station:

Pretty interactive, don't you think?

Today I passed through the new station of Holargos which is almost ready. The platforms were amazing! I couldn't take a shot cause the metro was moving fast The wall is red making a nice contrast with blue Holargos signs. Amazing!

Holargos Metro station inaugurated

The new Athens Metro station in the suburb of Holargos officially opened to the public on Friday, the 28th station in the constantly expanding metro network, while the 29th station at Aghia Paraskevi suburb is due to open in October.

The Holargos station, accessed from Messogion Avenue and at a depth of 22 meters under ground, will serve an estimated 20,000 commuters daily, making the route to downtown Athens Syntagma Square in just nine minutes.

A three-level underground parking station with a capacity of 630 cars also opened to the public on Friday at the nearby Nomismatokopeio station at the Athens Mint, also on Messogion Avenue.

A new metro line from Galatsi to Paradeisos, in Maroussi, the "U" line, will be tendered in early 2011, servicing areas without an adequate bus network.
can't wait for the photos!

As everybody residing in Athens probably knows by now, the new Holargos Metro Station on line 3, has been completed and became part of the Athens Metro Railway system much later than the latest publicly announced completion date (late 2009).

Architecturally speaking, the new station follows in the footsteps of the "Nomismatokopeio" and "Keramikos" stations with many shades of red (and yellow) covering its wall surfaces. Its highlights include an indoor footbridge ehat connects the two train platforms each one with directions to and from the center of Athens. Also, a probably small number of antiquities are displayed via a glass floor at one of the station's alls leading to the escalators to the surface, Direction from Athens to the Mesogeia area (thus the name of Messogeion avenue where the exit of the station is).

What follows are my pictures, all hosted in photobucket.

-Entrance and Details from Mesogeion Avenue direction Athens (next to the former "Sevastakis shoes factory, now accommodating an electronics store)

-Towards Mesogeion Avenue.

For the observant ones, the tall residential block is the 12-storey tower in Ventouri street, one of the few residentials (3 to be precise) exceeding the 10-floor mark in Holargos.

Inside the station:

-The train platforms with the indoor bridge being visible:

-From the foot bridge to the platforms:

-Escalators

-The Antiquities - Description as per the following sign:

Finally, according to the press announcements, the Aghia Paraskevi Station, the last incomplete remaining in line 3, is expected to be delivered some time in October 2010...

This is probably a little OT but I wasn't sure where else to post this question.

What happened to the 5km light rail line in Kalamata? Was it ever built?

Thanks for your interest in Athens metro. You picked some really impressive works of art on flickr.
Btw, Frankfurt U-bahn has also some artistic elements, the stations are quite dark though. That's why you won't find any U-bahn pictures if you follow the link in my signature.
