Kerameikos and Egaleo stations look great but I'm not sure about Elaionas, which looks a bit gloomy.

Also, how likely are those Elaionas towers to get built? I really hope they don't, to be honest. I can't think of anything worse than Athens pretending to be Dubai.

They're just the proposals of a renowned architect, also we cannot compare any European city with Dubai as the later is an Asian Oasis in the middle of nothing, actually the real work is the city itself, while Athens is just a normal European city very human and real. So if such projects are "maybe" someday to occur they will be just a handful as in most of other neighboring European cities, see examples of Madrid, Paris or Warsaw where real nice things are going on.

But no city can be compared with Dubai, fortunately, as I personally do not like that city.

In order to appreciate Athens metro as it is today, one has to know what it used to look like. The following 2 photos were taken at Piraeus station in 1981 (not by me). They show typical rolling stock of that time. Note the deplorable state of the platform: plain concrete without any kind of embellishment.

Not any more! Since May 26th the longest escalators are at Elaionas station.

pubic transport Athens

Hello together!

I'm a really big fan of the public transport system in athens so I opend a new theard (my first!)

i start with my own gallery about the public transport in athens:
http://http://picasaweb.google.com/Alexis.Vassilios/TripToAthens

News, statements and informations about the public transport system of Athens are welcomed!

My first easy informations:

Athens has a suburban railway system (operated by Proastiakos PAE) with 3 Lines:
Pireas-Athens-SKA-Airport
Pireas-Athens-SKA-Korinth-Kiato
Airport-SKA-Korinth-Kiato

Pireas and SKA (Archanes) are cities in the suburb of athens!

Athens has also 3 metro lines:
1: Pireas-Monasteraki-Omonia-Irini-Kifissia
2: Ag.Antonios-Athens Railway station-Omonia-Syntagma-Ag.Dimitrios
3: Airport-Doukissis Plakentias-Ethniki Amyna-Syntagma-Monasteraki-Aegaleo

And finally 3 Tram lines:
3: SEF-Glyfada
4: SEF-Syntagma
5: Syntagma-Gylfada

And don't forget the 450 bus lines and more then 20 trolley lines in the area of attiki.

For better understanding here are some maps:

Metro, Tram, Proastiakos

Has the SKA-Korinth-Kiato line been electrified yet?

The following are some of my own Athens transit photos:

Electric trolley buses near Syntagma Square:

Tram waiting for a traffic light to change:

Metro Line 3:

We should have walk-through metro trains in the United States:

Pacing one of the new suburban trains on the Attiki Odos:

One of the old narrow gauge trains covered in grafitti along the line to Patras, which is to be replaced by the new standard gage suburban network:

Another narrow gauge train stopped a block short of the station in Loutraki by an illegally parked car. This line will also be replaced by the new standard gauge suburban network:
