Hypermarts in Perak flourishing
September 05, 2007 20:39 PM - The Star IPOH: Six more hypermarkets will be opened in Perak, said Mentri Besar Datuk Seri Moha-mad Tajol Rosli Ghazali. He said each hypermarket would provide job opportuni-ties for about 300 people, de-pending on the size of the building. “We are allowing more hypermarkets to operate in view of the present trend among city dwel-lers to shop at such outlets,” he said yesterday after visiting Tesco’s first distribution centre in Simpang Pulai near here. Tajol Rosli said the six new hypermarkets comprised two Tesco outlets in Taiping and Kampar and four MyDin stores in Buntong, Manjoi and Meru Raya here and Simpang in Tai-ping. “The Taiping Tesco will open this Sept 27 and the one in Kampar is expected to be ready by next year,” he said. For the MyDin stores, Tajol Rosli said the state had already given its approval and the construction costs were estimated at RM56mil for the store in Buntong, RM11.9mil for Manjoi, RM66mil for Meru Raya and RM60mil for Taiping. On the Tesco distribution centre, Tajol Rosli said it would greatly benefit Perak farmers as the hypermarket’s suppliers would buy their products. Tesco corporate and legal affairs director Azlam Shah Alias said the RM60mil centre begun operations in June and was the first centre in the country. “This location was chosen because of its accessibility to all our 15 Tesco stores nationwide,” he said. He added that Tesco had also met with its suppliers from Johor, Selangor and Pahang on the construction of their packing houses. “One has been built, two are under construction and another is under negotiation. “The farmers’ products will be sent through the packing houses where the products are sorted before being sent out,” he said. |

Other version of news..
Perak Calls For Opening Of More Supermarkets GOPENG, Sept 5 (Bernama) -- Menteri Besar Perak Datuk Seri Tajol Rosli Ghazali said the state was encouraging the opening up of more hypermarkets to cater to the demand in the major towns of the state and to also speed up development in the respective places. "We have found that in places where there are hypermarkets, the development pace is faster whether in terms of housing or other business activities and shop offices," he told reporters after visiting the Tesco Distribution Centre (TDC) here today. The state has also given the greenlight to Tesco to open up two more branches in Perak, one in Ipoh and another in Kampar. A new Tesco branch will be starting its operations in Taiping this September 29. Tesco which has 12 Tesco hypermarkets and three Tesco Extra outlets currently, has opened up Tesco Extra outlets respectively in Taman Teh Teng Seng and Taman Tasek Indra, both in Ipoh. Tajol Rosli said approvals have been also given to hypermarket operator, Mydin group, to open up their outlets in Buntong, Manjoi and Meru Raya -- all of which are in Ipoh and another branch in Simpang near Taiping. "Mydin's hypermarket in Buntong will be developed at a cost of RM56 million, Manjoi (RM11.9 million), Meru Raya (RM66 million) and Simpang (RM60 million)," he said. The outlet in Buntong is expected to provide job opportunities to about 400 people while the Manjoi outlet will provide jobs to 80 people, Meru Raya 400 people and the Simpang outlet about 300 people. Meanwhile the Director of Corporate and Legal Affairs for Tesco Stores (Malaysia) Sdn Bhd, Azlam Shah Alias, said the company's distribution centre here, built at a cost of RM60 million started its operations in June and provided job opportunities to 205 people. He said the centre which distributed all the goods to the Tesco chain of hypermarkets and Tesco Extra outlets nationwide, currently had 256 registered suppliers with 25 percent of them being Bumiputeras. Tesco, an associate company of Sime Darby, started operations in Malaysia in 2001, opening its first hypermarket outlet in Puchong, Selangor the following year. It has so far offered more than 4,500 job opportunities besides partnering 1,400 local suppliers in its venture. About 95 percent of the products sold at its stores are sourced from Malaysia. Tesco, through its cooperation with the government, has also helped local suppliers enter Britain's market through their stores in the country. Last year, local goods exported to the market amounted to RM207 million in worth. -- BERNAMA -- |

Perak's RM250m Tourism Hub project
IPOH: High-end, upmarket living with branded goods and at least 50 fine dining restaurants to choose from. That is the lifestyle the state government wants to promote among locals and tourists with the unveiling of the RM250mil Perak Tourism Hub project at Bandar Baru Medan, here. Perak Mentri Besar Datuk Seri Mohamad Tajol Rosli Ghazali said he was impressed with the concept of Penang-based Emerald Capital Group in wanting to bring the “best of the city into a single place.” “We want the best food in the city to be made available at the hub, including special gifts and branded goods which are sold only in Kuala Lumpur,” he said on Thursday at the groundbreaking ceremony of the project that comprises of four multi-storeyed towers. This, he said, could attract visitors from as far as Thailand and Penang to stop here to shop for branded goods which were sold only in Kuala Lumpur. Tajol Rosli said the project would be an integrated one-stop tourist information centre, an extensive shopping mall, a clubhouse with complete recreational facilities, cineplexes and a banquet hall that could accommodate 2,000 people. The project, to be built in two phases, is expected to be completed by 2010 with the first phase finishing by 2009. He said that the state government was not emphasising on the needs of the upper income group only with the project. There were other shopping complexes that were available for the lower and middle income groups, he added. On the new airport at Seri Iskandar, Tajol Rosli said the Transport Ministry must first assure that there would be inbound and outbound flights before the state would go ahead to build the RM301mil airport. Better transport system needed to boost tourism
IPOH needs a proper public transportation system to better serve tourists, Datuk Bandar Da-tuk Mohamad Rafiai Moktar said. “I have approached the operators about improving their vehicles but they said they find it hard to do so as their business is losing money,” said Mohamad Rafiai at the launching of the Perak Chapter Matta Fair 2007 in Ipoh yesterday. He noted that the double-tracking railway project between Rawang and Ipoh would be operational by early next year. “We do not even have a proper public transportation system to transfer tourists from the railway station to hotels and bus stations,” he added. Mohamad Rafiai revealed that a private transport company had come up with a proposal to revamp the city’s public transportation system. However, it would still need to discuss with the local public transportation operators before submitting the proposal. On another matter, Mohamad Rafiai said efforts were being taken to develop the city’s tourism industry. “We have been promoting the city through the Tourism Promotional Organisation for Asian-Pacific Cities in China,” he said, adding that they were encouraging students to visit Ipoh and Perak. Mohamad Rafiai also said the private sector was helping out the tourism industry by buil-ding and providing tourists with facilities and infrastructures. “A five-star hotel with a ban-quet hall that can accommodate about 2,000 people is being constructed,” he said. Other efforts included ensuring the cleanliness of the city and upgrading other facilities and infrastructures for tourists, said Mohamad Rafiai. -- The Star -- |

Mydin Holdings labur lebih RM500 juta
Oleh AINUL ASNIERA AHSAN PETALING JAYA 9 Sept. – Mydin Mohamed Holdings Bhd. -- Utusan Online -- |

Ipoh’s ‘messy’ public transport system under fire
By : Jaspal Singh 2007/08/09 Email to friend Email to Friend Print article Print Article IPOH: It is now official — the city’s public transportation system is a mess. The unflattering assessment came from none other than the city’s mayor, Datuk Mohd Rafiai Moktar. "Ipoh’s transportation system is in very poor condition. Something urgent needs to be done to improve the situation," he said after opening the Perak Matta Fair 2007 here yesterday. Rafiai said the public transportation system was not on a par with the development taking place in the city. New commercial, residential and industrial areas and suburban towns are either not adequately serviced or not serviced at all by the city’s transport operators. Rafiai said even within the city centre, there were not enough connecting routes, especially from the Medan Gopeng bus and taxi hub and the railway station to tourist destinations. "The city has been witnessing a gradual rise in the arrival of foreign tourists but with the present transportation system, we have not been able to fully tap their presence here," he said. The mayor said the dilapidated buses, hire cars and taxis jeopardised the tourism efforts by the authorities. Last year, more than 150,000 foreign tourists visited the city as compared with about 140,000 the previous year. Rafiai said the Ipoh city council could only afford to erect more bus and taxi stands but was unable to overhaul the transportation system. "It has become urgent for the entire public transportation system to be revamped so that it will be the choice mode of transport for city folk and also those living in the outskirts." Rafiai outlined five strategies for an improved and efficient public transportation system: l replacing old buses, hire cars and taxis with new vehicles; l creating new routes to connect with new commercial and residential areas and suburban towns; l establishing either no-fare or low-fare service to connect tourist spots within the city; l extending operating hours of buses and taxis till late night; and, l introducing new two-way transport service between the Ipoh railway station and the Medan Gopeng bus and taxi hub. The city expects to receive more tourists once the RM4 billion Rawang-Ipoh double-tracking project begins operating early next year. Ipoh would also be seeing more arrivals of foreign university students from the Asia-Pacific region beginning next year. Representatives of 56 cities in the region, including Ipoh, met last month in Guangzhou, China, and a resolution was passed to promote each other’s cities to their student populations as part of efforts to increase tourism-based economic activity and promote interaction.

Ipoh-Lumut Highway needs another RM100m: Samy
By CLARA CHOOI BOTA: An additional RM100mil is needed to complete the long overdue Ipoh-Lumut Highway, which is now expected to be ready by early next year. Works Minister Datuk Seri S. Samy Vellu said the additional funds were required to meet with some 30% of requests made by residents living along the highway. Among the requests, he said, were the construction of more flyovers, traffic lights and street lamps. "If we do not accommodate, these requests will go on for the rest of our lives. "We cannot give in 100% but we will try to make sure that the highway is acceptable to everyone," he told reporters Monday after a site visit to the new Sungai Perak bridge along the highway here, about 50km from Ipoh. "A very basic flyover itself costs about RM17.5mil," he said, adding that the highway project was initially fixed at RM175mil. He also pointed out that residents wanted traffic lights that could detect the presence of vehicles. "For example, if there are no cars coming from a side road, the traffic lights will turn green for motorists along the highway," he said. On the street lamps, Samy Vellu said that the request was at a 4km stretch along the highway near the new Seri Iskandar township. He added that he would submit the proposal for extra funds to the Cabinet and the Second Finance Minister for approval. On the request by highway contractor Malaysian Resources Corporation Bhd for more time to complete the job, Samy Vellu said his ministry was willing to give the company another three months. "I am happy that 90.19% of the highway is completed. However, I am not confident that it can be completed by the Nov 30 deadline this year," he said. The reason for the delay, said Samy Vellu, was because of the various basic amenities such as cables and water and gas pipes that had to be moved. "To move each of the amenities costs about RM6mil so that's why I have no objection to extending the deadline. The highway should be ready by early next year," he said. |

‘Flying hospital’ project awaiting ministry’s nod
IPOH: Bandar Seri Iskandar may get the world's first airport for medical emergencies if the Transport Ministry gives the project the green light. Project developer Casa Pasific Sdn Bhd said it met with ministry officials on Aug 27 and they were receptive to the idea. "On March 20, we signed a MOU with the SEDC (Perak State Economic Development Corporation) for the project on a 405ha piece of land," company chairman Datuk Seri Dr Mohd Hilmi Ismail told reporters here Wednesday. However, he said work could not begin without the ministry’s approval. Dr Mohd Hilmi said the airport was aimed at providing urgent and preventive medical care, including other medical services to people in crisis in the Asia-Pacific region. "A 500-bed specialist hospital will also be built within the airport perimeter. The airport will be equipped with a 3,700m-long runway suitable for various types of aircraft,” he said, adding that the airport would also have a teaching hospital to train doctors in crisis management. The project, to cost RM1bil, was expected to be completed in 38 months once the company obtained approval, he said, adding that funding for the project would be coming from overseas. In February, Perak Mentri Besar Datuk Seri Mohamad Tajol Rosli Ghazali was reported as saying that Tekah airport, one of the country’s oldest, having been built by the British in 1940 in Taiping, had been chosen as the hub for Global Flying Hospitals (GFH), an international body that brings humanitarian medical support to developing countries. It is learnt that the runway at Tekah airport was too short to accommodate the plan for the GFH. The issue of the airport had been in the limelight following an announcement by Tajol Rosli that a new one should be built at Bandar Seri Iskandar if the Transport Ministry allowed international flights from the proposed airport.

Perak Likely To Have World's First Humanitarian Service Airport
IPOH, Oct 17 (Bernama) -- Plans are afoot to build what is touted to be the world's first airport dedicated to providing humanitarian services in Bandar Seri Iskandar, about 40km from here, which is expected to cost RM1 billion. To be developed by Casa Pasifik Sdn Bhd, the airport will take three years and two months to complete. Casa Pasifik chairman Datuk Seri Mohd Hilmi Ismail said the facility would serve as a medical training centre, aviation academy and a transit hub for global relief operations. It will also promote health tourism as well as research and development activities. "We've chosen Bandar Seri Iskandar due to its strategic location, the amount of available land. It also fulfils security requirements. In fact, some parties have asked that the airport be built in their countries," he told reporters here today. Disaster and war victims from across the globe may also be flown to the airport for medical treatment, he said. Mohd Hilmi said the company had applied to the Perak state government for 800ha of land to build a 3,760m-long runway to accommodate Boeing 747 aircraft and other related projects. According to him, Perak State Development Corporation and Casa Pasifik inked a memorandum of understanding on March 20 to signal their commitment for the project. Mohd Hilmi also said the Civil Aviation Department gave its green light for the project in July. Casa Pasifik, he said, had secured funding for the airport project and was now awaiting final approval from the Transport Ministry and other relevant authorities. -- BERNAMA
