2011/06/07
By Jaspal Singh
jaspal@nst.com.my

IPOH: Perak’s aim of becoming a higher education hub received a boost with SEGi University College building a campus 10km from here.
The institution will develop the RM500 million SEGi Enclave over the next two years.

It will include an administration block, hostels, academic staff residences, recreational facilities and apartments for international students. The campus covers 25ha and will open in two years.

It can house 8,000 students and 1,200 administrative personnel.

Menteri Besar Datuk Seri Dr Zambry Abd Kadir said the campus would boost the state government’s drive to turn Perak into an education hub.

“It is also our goal to make Perak a world-class education centre that attracts international students.

“We hope to bring in students from outside Perak and across the world to experience the unique traditions and cultures of the state.” He said this after laying a foundation stone at the institution’s site along the Ipoh-Lumut road near here yesterday.

Zambry said SEG International Bhd would initially invest RM300 million and a further RM200 million in the campus.

He said SEGi University College’s investment showed that the state was an attractive destination for higher education providers.

He said the campus would generate new economic activities in the surrounding areas.

Present were SEG International Bhd group managing director Datuk Seri Clement Hii, chief executive officer Lee Kok Cheng and SEGi University College Vice-Chancellor Professor Emeritus Dr Muhamad Awang.

SEGi, in partnership with foreign universities, will offer fo und at io n, diplomas and bachelor degrees in healthcare, allied health sciences, business, engineering, creative arts, and hospitality and tourism.

SEGI labur RM300 juta bina kampus moden
Oleh Shamsul Kamal Amarudin

2011/06/07

Hadir sama, Speaker Dewan Undangan Negeri (DUN) Perak, Datuk R Ganesan; Pengarah Urusan SEG International Bhd, Datuk Seri Clement Hii; Ketua Pegawai Eksekutif Kolej Universiti SEGi, Lee Kok Cheng serta Naib Canselornya, Prof Emeritus Dr Muhamad Awang.

Preservation NOT Demolition

Zambry pointing to the many heritage buildings on the Heritage Trail map
Perak Menteri Besar Dato’ Seri Zambry Abdul Kadir has clarified that the 60 buildings, reported earlier, which had been short listed for demolition by Ipoh City Council was incorrect stating, “the buildings are actually meant for preservation” and asked that reporters present to correct the earlier statement.

Zambry spoke to reporters after the weekly Wednesday state exco meeting on June 1. A day earlier State Exco for Tourism Dato Hamidah Osman had expressed her “disappointment” about Ipoh Mayor Dato Roshidi Hashim’s statement regarding “60 buildings on MBI’s blacklist meant for demolition” saying it contradicted the states tourism tagline “Nature and History” which meant “we should be preserving as much of our old buildings as possible”.

At the state exco meeting Ipoh Mayor Dato Roshidi together with representatives from two heritage NGO’s were called in for a special discussion regarding the preservation of heritage sites. Ipoh has a lot of old and heritage buildings and these have become a ‘new attraction’. MBI has conducted an extensive program to identify old and heritage buildings around Ipoh and in March this year held a workshop together with the Heritage Department in KL on the topic “How to conserve heritage buildings”. The state government will ask the Heritage Department to gazette these heritage buildings once they have been identified.

Zambry also highlighted that the Heritage Trail held every Saturday starting from the railway station was popular, indicating an interest in Ipoh’s heritage identity and reiterated the state government’s plan to restore Panglima Lane, better known as Concubine Lane.

S'pore firm eyes RM400 mln investment in high-impact project
BusinessNews 2011-06-06 16:23

IPOH, June 6 (Bernama) -- The Perak state government will study a proposal from a Singapore company to invest over RM400 million in a high-impact project in the Kinta Valley.

Menteri Besar, Datuk Seri Dr Zambry Abdul Kadir, said the state government was keen on the company's proposal to set up a motor vehicle-based project, which would include an exhibition and sales centre.

"The state government will closely scrutinise the project, which is expected to be a catalyst to the growth of the Kinta Valley," he told reporters during his working visit to Singapore from June 2-4, 2011.

Zambry said the project covered 140 hectares and was expected to make Perak the second state to boost the motor industry.

He said he was satisfied with his visit to Singapore which has achieved its aim to foster the state's strategic relationship with investors in the island state.

"One of the results of the meeting with investors is that many of them are interested to start working on former mines in the state," he said.

Zamry said the Singapore investors were interested in Perak because of the direct flights by Firefly.

"We hope that this will help boost tourism and economic growth, considering that Perak offers more compare to Penang and Johor, especially its lower cost of living," he said.

He said the state government has held talks with Firefly to increase the frequency of the Ipoh-Singapore flights from twice a day now.

Zambry said this was important considering the flights were expected to increase with the launch of 'Visit Perak 2012' campaign.

"Currently, the federal government is in the final stage of its study of our request to build an airport to serve as a regional hub for the northern region of Peninsular Malayasia," he said.

He said Tokyo-based tyre company, Toyo, has decided to relocate its operations to Perak.

"The company is expected to invest over RM1 billion," he said.

Tenders called to ‘resurrect’ Ipoh bazaar
By SYLVIA LOOI
sylvia@thestar.com.my

Tenders are being called to redevelop the site of the former Yau Tet Shin bazaar, marking the start of a journey to “resurrect” what was once a famous Ipoh landmark.

Perak Chinese Chamber of Commerce and Industry (PCCCI), which owns the land, said plans are afoot to build a cultural, tourism, trade and economic centre in the heart of Ipoh.

Tenders to build a new complex, which would consist of a six-floor podium block and two tower blocks, would be closed on July 15, said PCCCI president Datuk Lim Kok Cheong.

“One tower block consists of 11 floors of service apartments and the other is a 10-floor budget hotel,” he said at a briefing on the project yesterday.

The original bazaar was built in 1961 by Hakka tin miner Yau Tet Shin.

In its heyday, the bazaar was known to locals as the “Octagonal Market” due to its eight-sided design.

However, it was demolished 10 years ago after the Ipoh City Council found that its structure was no longer safe.

It is now a parking lot.

Lim said the ground floor will house a shopping centre for local produce and manufactured products.

The first floor of the building will be the PCCCI office while the second floor will be an exhibition gallery and cultural centre, he added.

Yau Tet Shin Bazaar working committee chairman Datuk Liew Sew Yee said PCCCI had sent a delegation to Malacca to seek methods to boost tourism in Perak.

Work on the project is expected to take 42 months once the tender was awarded.

After the event, Lim handed over RM45,000 on behalf of the chambers to Perak exco member Datuk Dr Mah Hang Soon.

The money would be donated to the 1MCA Medical Foundation.

The PCCCI, which was approved by the State Land and Mines Office, had been granted a 99-year lease beginning June last year.

Project set to become pride of Perak
By EDMUND NGO
edmundngo@thestar.com.my

WITH only approval pending from the Ipoh city council, the RM300mil phase one of the SEGi Enclave project is set to take off and change the educational landscape in Perak.

The project would feature a state-of-the-art SEGi University College campus, recreational facilities, on-campus residences and retails outlets on a 24ha plot of land.

Perak Mentri Besar Datuk Seri Dr Zambry Abdul Kadir said the project was expected to become a catalyst for development in its surrounding area, including Falim.

“This project shows the success of the state government in ensuring Perak becomes a knowledge-based state,” he said.

He also urged the SEGi group to start construction as soon as possible once approval is obtained.

“We will do our part in ensuring our promises to investors are fulfilled while we hope SEGi would also quickly build what they have planned as the project would bring tremendous benefit to the people of Perak,” he said after the ground-breaking ceremony at the SEGi Enclave project site recently.

SEGi University College vice-chancellor Prof Emeritus Dr Muhamad Awang said the campus, once completed, would serve about 8,000 students, 500 academic staff and 700 support staff.

“The construction will take one and a half years once we begin and the cost would come up to RM500mil once completed,” he said.

He said the campus would offer a broad range of Foundation, Diploma and Bachelor degree courses including healthcare, business, creative arts, hospitality and tourism.

“The campus gives access and opportunity not only to Perakians but also to those from other states. It plays an important role in developing human capital in the country,” he said.

Perak minta LLM ubah laluan Lebuhraya Pantai Barat
2011/06/08

- BERNAMA

MB jamin pembinaan lebuh raya tingkat pembangunan
http://www.bharian.com.my/bharian/ar...gunan/Article/

Space available for high-rise development

THE Ipoh City Council is beckoning developers who are keen to start high-rise projects around the city.

Ipoh mayor Datuk Roshidi Hashim said while buildings in the city centre were only allowed to reach up to 85.3m above sea level (17 storeys) as imposed by the Department of Civil Aviation (DCA), there is no such limit in suburban areas such as Klebang, Tambun and Meru Raya.

“In these outskirts areas, development is permitted to reach a height of above the stipulated 85.3m. Actually, there is space available for investors to develop high-rise buildings here,” he said.

On another matter, Roshidi said the council’s one-stop centre (OSC) had managed to approve 563 or 62.6% from the 899 applications for projects that had been received since Jan 1.

The remaining applications were being processed by the OSC, he added.

“Among big projects approved by the OSC committee are a 12-storey hotel plus a convention centre in Meru Raya and a seven-storey hotel in Jalan Chung On Siew here,” he added.

Buildings to be gazetted in Ipoh
By ROSHIDI ABU SAMAH
roshidi@thestar.com.my

IPOH City Council (MBI) has identified at least 120 buildings and monuments around the city to be gazetted under the National Heritage Act, said Ipoh Mayor Datuk Roshidi Hashim.

Among the buildings are Ali Pitchay Town House, Ipoh Railway Station, Chung Thye Phin building, Perak Hydro Building, Hongkong & Shanghai Bank building, Pakistan Mosque, Ipoh Royal Club, Kinta Aerated Water, Federated Malay States Bar and Restaurant, Anglo Chinese School and Odeon Theatre which have been around since the end of the 18th century.

“We also have plans to seek recognition for Ipoh as a Heritage City from the United Nations Educational, Scientific and Cultural Organisation (Unesco).

“We think there is no problem to get the status as the minimum requirement by Unesco is at least 120 buildings and monuments, whereas Ipoh has 147 of them.”

“Now, we are preparing an inventory of heritage buildings and monuments,” said Roshidi, adding that the inventory would need approval from the state government and the Department of National Heritage.

Currently, there are 248 cities throughout the world which have been granted “world heritage status” by Unesco.

In Malaysia, Georgetown in Penang and Malacca have been given this recognition by the international body.

According to Roshidi, the Heritage City status would attract tourists to Ipoh, thus contributing to the development of the local tourism industry.

He said MBI was also planning to develop its Heritage Trail programme like the ones in Penang and Malacca as a tourist attraction.

“There are three stages of the proposed Heritage Trail: the Tin Heritage Trail which is about 2.5 km, the Old Town Heritage Trail (4 km) and Tin City Heritage Trail (14 km),” he said.

Roshidi said the proposals contained in the 2020 Ipoh Local Draft would be presented to the State Planning Committee. It will subsequently be gazetted for implementation.

Perak cadang wujud zon bebas asap rokok

Nam Heong for the hardcore coffee connoisseurs

Hardcore Kopitiam in Malaysia would always associate coffee with Old Town Kopitiam. Old Town Kopitiam is a household name in Malaysia and it is now going worldwide since establishment in 1958.

The word kopitiam originates from a Chinese dialect which also means “a coffee house”. Kopitiam phenomenon does not revolve on the existence of the age old coffee shops but the ability of the caffeine induced drink to unite people from all walks of life to kopitiam.

The influence of the TV show, Kopitiam certainly increased the popularity of kopitiams around Malaysia and one such shop which is gaining rave reviews from coffee skeptics around Malaysia is the Nam Heong Kopitiam.

One of the oldest Kopitiam shops in Ipoh, this shop has served Ipoh people for many years. Though years have passed by but the aroma and taste of their coffee will never fade away. It’s that very detail that makes Nam Heong stand out from other Kopitiams.

Ordering a cup of the fabled Ipoh white coffee is a must, unless the person is not a coffee lover. The brewed white coffee comes in with a frothy milk topping and it is tastefully sweetened and the bitterness is loved by many. The feeling is sensational and coffee lovers would want more of it.

In general, white coffee is a unique blend of the finest Liberica, Arabica and Robusta beans, and premium grade non-dairy creamer.

Once just serving coffees and toasted bread, now the shop is serving various kinds of kopitiam foods. Meals ranging from Char Kuey Teow and Curry Mee have been well liked by the Ipoh folks. Many people throng to the shop everyday and people from various races savor the best of kopitiam culture in Ipoh.

Regular customer, A. Murugaiah stated that he comes to the shop everyday and gets a cup of coffee. To him, it’s a beautiful addiction that he will never quit for a lifetime.

This kind of affection for the customers would ensure that the outlet would last long and serve people with the best coffee. There was even a patron who stated that he proposed his wife in this very shop.

According to Matthew Gan, a Singaporean stated that a cup of coffee united him and his wife and at this very place, he proposed to her and he would always come to the kopitiam whenever he is in Ipoh.

It’s not just a cup of coffee but the other elements in Kopitiam certainly have a story. Matthew’s heartwarming statement shows that kopitiam can foster relationships and forge a bond between people.

People gossip, share stories and even conduct business meetings in Kopitiam outlets. Kopitiam will be a cultural heritage for Malaysian in the years to come and Nam Heong’s name will always be uttered by the Ipoh people in the coming years.

Even the future generation would be able to savor the beauty of these outlets and its influence will continue to grow.
