Boston, Lincolnshire, England

Built in 1822 and partly rebuilt in 1960 following a major fire.

They were going to remove the ugly 'faux' balcony in 2010 but never got around to it. I hope it comes down one day.

Prior to the construction of the town hall the Guildhall, built in 1390, housed the town council.

The Town Hall of (pop. 42,000) Coburg in northern Bavaria. Similar in looks to the Bonn Town Hall, it is perhaps less fanciful, although more colorful... a Late Renaissance Building with a Rococo facelift.

Coburg has a peculiar architectural feature called the "Coburger Erker"... or small round corner pavilions either 2 or 3 stories tall, projecting from the main building...

... 38 km south of the historic Ducal city of Coburg (capital of the former duchy of Saxe-Coburg Gotha)... lies the ancient city of Bamberg (pop. 70,000)... best preserved (little WWII damage) of all German cities... and a UNESCO World Heritage Site.

The Rathaus of Bamberg (city founded 973) is very unique among German city halls. It takes up an entire island in the Regnitz River (a tributary of the Main). There is a road running thru the building, as well as at its' southern end.

The Bamberg Rathaus is also a symbolic separator between the Ecclesiastic Upper Town of the powerful Prince-Bishops (now Archbishops) of Bamberg (along with the ancient cathedral, old and new Bishops Palace and St. Michael's Monastery), and the Lower Town of the Burghers and merchants.

Also, Bamberg Cathedral is unique in northern Europe. Inside are buried 2 Holy Roman Emperors, 2 saints and the only Papal tomb north of the Alps (Clement II, former Bishop of Bamberg, died 1046).

The Baroque (left) part of the Rathaus has tromphe l'oeil paintings of architecture on its' walls, with the middle Baroque gate tower, and the right medieval half timbered portion of he Rathaus.

The old Detroit City Hall (no longer standing)

http://scarchie.files.wordpress.com/...-city-hall.jpg

...and the current Detroit Municipal Building

http://upload.wikimedia.org/wikipedi...b/bf/CAYMC.jpg

The Wayne County Building, also in Detroit. I believe it's currently vacant though as Wayne County moved it's offices into the Guardian Building.

Berlin, actually consisting of numerous agglomerated cities, towns and boroughs, possesses a wide number of beautiful old city halls. Let's take a look at two of them:

Rotes Rathaus (Red City Hall), built in 1869, is Berlin's main city hall:

The Down Under - Sydney Town Hall

The town hall was built in stages. the first stage consisted of the front section and tower. (1868-1875) .(the 2nd stage 1883-89, Centennial Hall).
In 1875 it was one of the tallest structures in Australia at 61m/200ft high to flagstaff. It overtook St James church as Sydneys tallest structure.

the TH remains nesttled in the skyscraper canon of George st

The famous town hall steps are a well know meeting place.

the clock tower is 57m high and is the 5th highest in Australia!
most town hall towers were built between 30m-45m tall.
but architect brother Thomas & Edward Bradridge wanted something outstanding.

The town hall has had many architects involved.
the original design was by JH. Willson, others involved were Albert Bond,D Macbeath , George McRae
its French Rennaisance style architecture is a real treat.

its interior is exqusite!
the lofty ceiling over 30m/100ft high and the hall extends some 200ft/60m long.

The centrepiece of the Main Hall is the Grand Organ, which was the largest in the world at the time.Organ builders W Hill & Son from London was chosen to construct the 54 ton structure which was shipped in 94 cases. The monster organ made its debut on August 9, 1890
quote from heritage statement> (history and construction of this spectacular instrument which survives almost entirely as built with 126 stops intact — the best preserved, huge, Romantic masterpiece organ in the world, staggering in its impact and awesome in its musical potential. It has one of only two full-length 64’ /20m reed stops in existence).

the amazing chandelier

In 2020, the woolworths bldg opposite will be razed to give the city some 5300sqm of open space to give the town hall a grand square!

Melbourne Town Halls:

North Melbourne, Melbourne City (from south, east & north), and South Melbourne:

Fitzroy, Collingwood & Richmond Town Halls (these municipalities have now been amalgamated as the City of Yarra), & on the other side of town, Essendon (now Moonee Valley) & Footscray (now Maribyrnong):

Out east a little: Hawthorn & Camberwell (both now Boorondara), & Prahran, & Malvern (2 shots): both now Stonnington.

By no means the complete tally: either of exisiting or former town halls. If you ask me, South Melbourne & Fitzroy win hands down, with runners-up due to Malvern.

Oud Batavia Stadhuis (the former Town Hall of Jakarta, today a museum), Indonesia - Not a very fancy town hall, but quiet old (1701), there are also a dungeon beneath the Town Hall that is said to be haunted.

Bandung Cityhall (Gedung Sate/Satay Building), Bandung, Indonesia - This Dutch-local art deco mixtures building was to be the new capitol building of the Dutch East Indies, as the Dutch favors Bandung's climate compared to overcrowded, humid, and congested Jakarta, however the plan was foiled with the coming Japanese invasion.
