Thanks for the maps RawLee. My map of Prague shows a ring road under development at least. But you have good public transport you see. Here something like 80-85% of peak hour travel is by car. We started off with English style cities (terraced housing) and good tramway systems. Then after 1940s we turned into big American style cities with spread out housing and everyone in cars. This is our problem, you are lucky in that regard.
Not really a competition, since(I only know Budapest)55-60% of traffic is cars, and 45-40% is MT. What do you mean by southern-europe? the newly joined countries lack good(if not basic)highway networks, trains are slow, and MT isnt the best either.
Yep,Prague is building its ringroad, since this thread is about it. Budapest also doing it,next year, only some 20-30kms will be missing. I dont know about Bratislava,I think they are doing cross-city highway. One good aspect in the "poor" Warsaw Pact was that mass transit building was encouraged.

In Bratislava is 60% by mass transport and and 40% by cars. Simply people living further from the city center use cars an people living closer MT. Yes there is "bypass" alomost in the city center which is completed. On the map is missing section from Lamač to Karlova Ves. There is planned outer bypass as well but it should be finnished in 2015.

Just making a light-hearted joke here RawLee, you are welcome to the worst traffic jams! By S Europe I mean Spain, Italia, Greece.

The other factor of interest for comparison is that part of the problem in Australian cities is big planning mistakes from the 1950s and later. They allowed factories, shopping centres, universities, schools etc to be built away from railway lines so you can only get to them by car (or bus). So travel patterns in cities now are very much cross-country rather than to CBD and central area. People travel from their houses to many different destinations so this encourages use of their cars. Planners are realising this error (should have been obvious!) and now they are trying to concentrate development near railways or build railways/busways to existing scattered development. Not very efficient.

Do you have this same problem developing over there or is employment etc more concentrated?

I dont know about the other 2 countries, but here, development happens around mass transit lines, since that rises its value. Or old buildings are torn down, and built upon, just in my district, half of the buildings in the centre are new. Mass transit is built too,gov just decided to fund(EU) the extension of 2 long tramlines, along with the new metro. In 3 rural cities,one-one additional tramline will be built. If development happens outside mass transit lines,I suppose the nearest bus' route is modified,so that it gets a new stop in the area. Luckily, the operator of MT slowly realizes that people dont like to change routes more than a few times, and starting to develop cross-city routes.

This area needs tunnel badly, without tunnel all cars go through inhabited area, yellow color are tunnels

this is rendering showing what is being built in Letná, orange color means underground garages
