Hopefully, we won't ever get to hear about accidents once this gets constructed... I've heard it'll take 3 years to complete, is that correct?

Contractor Saudi Bin Ladin has started to demolish the disaster-prone Jamarat bridge in Mena, Saudi Arabia
and build a US $1.12 billion (SR4.2 billion) replacement on the site.

The move follows last week’s tragedy, when 360 pilgrims lost their lives in a stampede on the bridge, during the stoning ritual on the last day of the Hajj.

More 5000 construction workers have already started work on the project, which will take three years to complete.

And the Bin Ladin Group has already established a pre-cast concrete block plant nearby to supply the project.

“The first stage of the projected overhaul of Jamarat bridge in Mena has begun and will be completed and ready for next year’s Hajj,” said Osama Al Bar, who heads a government centre that helps organise the Hajj.

The first stage involves the construction of a two-storey bridge and an underground emergency exit.

The pilgrims were crushed at the eastern entrance of the bridge as they jostled to perform the stoning ritual in Mena, a narrow valley near the holy city of Makkah.

Around 2.5 million Muslims performed the Hajj this year, and the death toll was the worst since 1990, when 1426 people were killed in a stampede in a tunnel.

Bodies covered in white shrouds littered the Jamarat area, as medics tended to the injured on stretchers. The bodies were driven away in ambulances and refrigerated trucks.

Saudi security forces set up a tight cordon around the Jamarat bridge to control the crowds, as many pilgrims thronged to carry on stoning three walls in a symbolic casting out of the devil and rejection of temptation.

In 2004, 250 pilgrims were crushed to death at Jamarat bridge. A decade earlier, 270 were killed in a similar stampede.

The new bridge will have an air conditioning system and ambulances will be able to access both floors of the structure.

The ground and first level will be for pilgrims coming in from east Mena while the second level, will be for pilgrims coming from the Makkah side.

The third will be for those entering from north Mena, and the fourth level will be designated for use by pilgrims entering from south Makkah, along King Abdul Aziz Road.

In sheer experience and projects done so far, the BLG blows Emaar away, however with the recent boom in the UAE i think in real estate terms there are very few companies that can compete with EMAAR.

Well, Emaar is a a real estate developer while Bin Laden Group is a construction company or a contractor. So, it is hard to compare.

I have no clue as to why the picture isn't working but i heard it has 3 phases and levels or something like that with the first phase to be ready in time for next year's hajj.

Work on High-Tech Jamrat Project in Full Swing
P.K. Abdul Ghafour, Arab News

JEDDAH, 4 June 2006 — Work on the new high-tech Jamrat project is in its full swing to complete the first phase, which includes the basement, ground floor and first floor, before the upcoming Haj.

“We have already completed 30 percent of the first phase,” said Habeeb Zainul Abideen, deputy minister of municipal and rural affairs. He said about 8,000 employees from the Saudi Binladin Group, which won the SR4.2 billion contract last year, are working around the clock in order to complete the project before the next Haj, which begins in late December. The new Jamrat Bridge is designed to hold 250,000 pilgrims an hour.

The project was designed by the government as part of its efforts to avoid stampedes and crowding in the Jamrat area. In the past, hundreds of pilgrims have died performing the stoning ritual with 360 pilgrims losing their lives as a result of a massive stampede on the last day of the Haj last year.

“The new project includes two helipads which will help in the speedy evacuation of casualties in case of accidents. One of the six towers of the complex will have a large escalator to take ambulances to the top level of the bridge,” Zainul Abideen said.

The new structure will have 10 entrances and 12 exits distributed over the four levels plus the ground floor to accommodate pilgrims coming from different directions.

The ground and first floor will be used by pilgrims coming from the east of Mina, who accounts for the bulk of the crowd. The second level will be used mainly by pilgrims coming from the direction of Makkah, the third level by those coming from the north of Mina and new pilgrim camps and the fourth level by pilgrims coming from the south of Makkah through King Abdul Aziz Road.

There will be three main tunnels for transporting vehicles. These tunnels will be connected to service towers for use by garbage collectors, ambulances and other services. There will also be a tunnel to be used by special delegations and VIPs.

Construction of a six-lane tunnel north of the bridge has started. The builders say this tunnel will transport pilgrims from the east of Mina to its west and will be linked to the Souk Al-Arab and Souk Al-Jowhara roads.

To manufacture pre-cast concrete blocks and other building materials required for the project the Saudi Binladin Group has established factories in Bahra, near Jeddah.
