is this crazy? i think Cal comes off better when it's called Cal than when it is called Berkeley. Only Cal can call itself that...so I figure, "Go with it"

UC system's admissions milestone for Asian Americans
For 1st time, whites not biggest group in freshman crop - Rick DelVecchio, Chronicle Staff Writer Friday, April 21, 2006 For the first time, Asian Americans are the dominant group being offered freshman admission this coming fall to the University of California's 10 undergraduate campuses, UC officials announced. Until now, the largest racial group of accepted students systemwide was always white. That's not true at the flagship UC Berkeley campus. Asians have been the largest group there since 1993, said Richard Black, associate vice chancellor for admissions and enrollment. Officials said the systemwide change is a reflection of population trends throughout California, as well as Asian American applicants' disproportionate success in meeting UC admission standards. Asian Americans make up 36 percent of the record 55,242 freshmen admitted for the fall term, compared with 35.6 percent for whites, according to figures released by the UC president's office. Factors behind the shift include higher numbers of Asian high school students, the growing number of Asian American public high school students who apply to UC, and the high eligibility of Asian American students based on high school coursework and test scores. Underrepresented students -- African Americans, American Indians and Chicano/Latinos -- make up 21.7 percent of the new freshman class statewide, compared with 20.6 percent last year. Nearly 47 percent of Asian American high school graduates applied to UC this year, compared with 43.1 percent last year. White high school graduates were second, at 14 percent, compared with 13.6 percent last year. Nearly a third of Asian American applicants meet UC eligibility requirements, compared with 13 percent of whites. "It means these students have prepared themselves very well for a UC education," Black said. The academic quality of incoming students continues to be high, according to a report by the UC president's office. Admitted students are taking more advanced-placement courses, and their average grade point average is 3.78. At UC Berkeley, the proportion of white undergraduates accepted dropped for the second year in a row, to less than a third, as Asian American representation climbed for the fifth straight year, to nearly 43 percent. Cal's African American admissions as a percentage of the total are the highest since 2003, and Chicano/Latino admissions the highest since 1997. In actual numbers, though, the gains are modest: A combined 1,505 in both groups have won slots for 2006, compared with 1,403 last year. E-mail Rick DelVecchio at rdelvecchio@sfchronicle.com. Well, I went to the Senior Weekend/Cal Day events at Berkeley, and I took some pictures. The city itself was quite gritty, but I loved it as it felt alive in a manner that resembles Tijuana. Here are some of the pictures I took.

Great pics! The Campanille is an awesome landmark for the school.
But are you actually implying that Berkeley city grit compares with Tijuana grit? Quote:

I love the misconception that the entire city of Tijuana looks like the old downtown. Apparently the American tourists haven't found their way out of an area of the city that has become a trick to rip them off.

UCSD's architecture pales in comparison to Berkeley and UCLA's. I go to UCSD and I like it for different reasons, but they definitely don't include campus atmosphere and surrounding city atmosphere. I'm from the bay area, and my best friend goes to Berkeley , and I've been there at least 8 times, and every time I go I'm always amazed by the vibrancy, urbanity, and the feeling that you're standing in the middle of such a powerful place. I just don't get that feeling at UCSD.
And also dewback, I'm a history major here (and double majoring with ethnic studies), and a poli sci minor. I was really surprised by the quality of our history , ethnic studies, and poli sci programs. So many fascinating classes and professors, just shows that quality can be found in relatively unheralded places too. I'm sure that Berkeley's programs are great too, in fact I've noticed that several books I've read in college were written by professors at Berkeley. Have fun. Oh I have no idea about North end. Also price center expansion by PC- you probably already knew that though. Do you know what's gonna be there and when it's gonna be done?
