There are some sick fucking people in this world, but then, when have we not known this; humanity is disgusting at times, it's stories like that that make you lose what little faith you have in your own species.

While there's no doubt the quality and levels of originality have declined to an alarming degree in recent times, with shitty remakes and 'franchise' (god I hate that word) sequels of trash like Transformers, Pirates, Fast+Furious etc etc, those figures are somewhat skewed and are harsh in some ways given the fact that it's lumping Harry Potter in there, which for one thing is unfair given that it's a series of books, they weren't just churning out sequels for the money, and for another thing the HP series, for the most part, has actually maintained a very high standard and I think not only should be appreciated for its quality now but will be looked back upon in future generations as a testament to the British film industry. Also, 'Rise of the Planet of the Apes' was a very interesting film and there's certainly no call for it to be used as a stick to beat hollywood with, especially when it was more of an original film in its own rights even if it was connected with the Planet of the Apes that came before. There are a good number of quality films being produced these days, both in Hollywood and abroad, sometimes though it's hard to see them amongst the franchised shit that takes all the profits. 127 Hours, Inception, Kings Speech, Senna, The Artist, Let the Right One In, The Hurt Locker, Slumdog Millionaire, Social Network, Black Swan, No Country For Old Men, Super 8, Drive.

in defense of superman 2, it was filmed back to back with the first so isn't strictly a sequel. that's why you have zod's exile in the first one. for your eyes only is an adaptation, and apart from one scene is not a sequel.

I always get confused between the Dallas and Atlanta skylines, they have some very similar buildings and topography. A few years ago Atlanta had a direct strike from a tornado as well, this is how one of its skyscrapers, the Westin Peachtree Hotel, looked after it:

^ and that downtown atlanta tornado (2008) only peaked as an EF2 as well (111-135mph), and remained by and large an EF1 along its route (86-110mph).
i've had two close calls with similar events, both in 2008. the first, the sirens woke us up and the power went out, but that apartment complex had no shelter (no basement), so we saw it out in the bathtub with a mattress on top of us, hoping for the best - the next morning we found out the tornado had torn a path just a few streets over - the second was a 110mph straight-line wind event that put our car's window through, downed trees and generally shook everyone up. right after i bought a noaa weather radio and moved to a brick build with basement. of course since then, zero close calls (though the usual seasonal watches / warnings / sirens). i dread to think what an EF5 (200mph+) tornado would do to a downtown area. forget a few broken windows - it'd be like a massive bomb went off. |

That sounds pretty terrifying. If I ever move over there I’d have to live in a brick house just out of peace of mind. Probably turn the basement into a tornado/ zombie apocalypse shelter as well.

Brick houses wouldn't offer more resistance in an EF4-EF5 category Tornado than a wooden one, i.e. none at all :hotwscared:

Indeed, if a car, truck or tree trunk came flying into the side of the house it doesn’t matter what it’s made of, it will crumble like a house of cards. Brick would be better protection against lower category tornadoes though, EF4- EF5’s are very rare. I’d still feel a lot safer in a brick house than the matchstick ones you always see in pieces on the news.

if you go on to live in GA you might not have much cause for concern, CR - our place is firmly in the tornado alley red zone though.
![]() ![]() interesting the london tornado of 2006 was an EF2, just like the downtown atlanta event of '08 and the omaha twister we narrowly missed: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/2006_London_tornado |

Yeah, the appalachian mountains stop tornados really forming where my fiance lives, though there are still warnings quite a few times a year. She lives in a light brown area, Atlanta looks to be just inside an orange bit. I would not want to live in a red zone.
