Actually, if you read the design statement - the materials and design makes sense.
The brown is rough glazed teracotta with thick stainless steel framing - and in context down Cambridge street, it actually looks good.

I don't go around where the site is often, how many old grand nice buildings are we losing, if any?

I don't think the renders are particularly good, and there's elements of the scheme which scream 60s/70s design, but I think the devil of this will be in the materials. Hammerson have made a cracking job of the Highcross scheme in Leicester in terms of materials but it does feel a bit 'false' in other respects, like it doesn't belong in Leicester.
I just hope that in trying to give a WOW factor to the scheme that it doesn't result in a poor choice of materials that will date terribly and a spanking new scheme that doesn't feel as though it's part of Sheffield.

Well, the canopy is wood, the blocking above ground is bubble glazed terracotta and below ground is sandstone that has artificial layering effect (by having lots of blocks on top of each other)

In general I like it, although the building on the right is a bit of a boring box.

But if you think about it if every building was unusual it would be too overwhelming. As long its well designed and built, it could be a good thing

DETAILED plans for Sheffield's Sevenstone retail quarter - put on hold because of the economic downturn - are likely to be approved by councillors on Monday.
