well,

It takes a long time to relocate tennants. A lot of tennants will not want to leave, and Sheffield Homes hae encounted some resistance so far (from what i understand). however if you want an example of the progress been made, the Park Hill housing office will close in August 2006, so expect most of the tennants to go soon after

Anyone know whether this was approved at the planning meeting recently?

Not quite park hill, but it could have looked like this if it was done 16 years ago.

Are they getting rid of that horrible chimney thing. I really hope so as it does'nt set a good picture of Sheffield from its key gateways- the parkway and station.

I hope you're joking - I'd have though the fact that the town hall is sitting on top of Ponds Forge's swimming pool would be a little more worrying.

I like the playful visualisation - I find it more honest than some of the 'real' renders that look good on paper, then the actual building is rubbish as it's made using poor materials.

I dunno if they will, cause part of Urban Splashes brochure says something about the heating system which heats the whole building with hot air, and i'd guess this is part of the system. (I think it does something like what the incinerator does)

The chimney is still there in the renders. Sure it never has smoke coming out of it though so don't know if it's actually used

Park Hill will be heated by the incinerator - not sure what the chimney is for though. I saw a map of the buildings the incinerator heated a few years ago - they covered a much larger area than I imagined, I'm sure most of the University's buildings were included. Tower blocks in Norfolk Park definitely were, probably the blocks in Netherthorpe as well.

It supplies most of the major buildings in the city:

Nice one - that's pretty much what I remembered. I thought the tower blocks around the Ponderosa might be connected, but they don't seem to be. According to the plan the chimney is for a 'Back-up boiler' for the heat and power network, so I guess it would have to stay in one form or another.

Took a couple of pics the other day.
If you go in it Park Hill is immense and should never be knocked down! (Not sure I'd like to live there though.)

Well the tall bit is all gated off, the plastic windows in the last pic are to stop people climbing into it. Seemingly they go to great lengths to get in! But there were plenty of residents milling around inside and out of the rest. The 'streets' are very scary places, every other flat is boarded up with loads of broken glass and concrete about. The ceilings are so low that its quite depressing being in there.

The streets are what made Park Hill special, but they're also a major cause of the recent problems. I can't remember how Urban Splash are dealing with this - does anyone know? I guess it would be good to restrict lateral movement, but I can't see the bridges being removed.

Didn't milk floats used to drive up to the 7th or 8th floor on Park Hill's 'streets' - or is that an urban myth?
