Does anyone know what the rules are for grade II listed buildings and what will actually be able to be changed?

From the looks of it, it'll just get a good clean, paint and some hot air balloons attached to the roof!

Plus interior walls in the flats will be realligned, a large multistorey car park will be built, new bars restaurants and community buildings will be built, the exterior landscape will be completely overhauled into a dynamic and functional space, the pedestrian route from Park Square will be improved by knocking a large hole through the lower floors, there will be an interactive statue where Jarvis kicks Michael Jackson up the arse while Bertie Bassett farts pink bubbles.

Maybe.

Hello.

Don't normally post here, but I was having a nosey around because I'm an ex- Barnsley boy.

This thread caught my eye because it has a few similarities with a redevelopment of a grade II listed building which Urban Splash are doing in Birmingham. The Rotunda.

Rotunda is one of Brum's best loved buildings, and Urban Splash are doing an awesome job of transforming it. Especially as it's been derelict for such a long time, and was very nearly demolished.

Rotunda Thread on the Brummie forum

Photo of The Rotunda taken around 6 years ago, during demolision of the old Bull Ring

Photo of The Rotunda taken December 2006

Urban Splash have also done an awesome job of resurrecting the Fort Dunlop building on the North side of Birmingham, which had lain derelict for some 40 years. (not my pics btw!)

This...

To the country's biggest advertisement hoarding...

Rest easy... I'm sure Park Hill will be awesome judging by what I've seen of Urban Splash so far!

Lol. I've got complete confidence in Urban Splash. If they cant do a good job of it theres no hope for the place.

I like the Rotunda. In fact, I like round hi-rise buildings in general. You don't see many of them being built these days.

It's amazing when you look back at pics of Park Hill from the sixties, the sheer size of it was enormous, this pic shows the scale of the demolished section behind the Park Hill flats that remain today.

Par Hill was truly momentous. We all know that it ultimately failed but the vision that must have been shown to build it in the first place is amazing. It's sheer scale and the ideals it embodied to me make it a modern classic. To me its part of what Sheffield is all about. Could you see something like that ever been built somewhere like Leeds? (knowing my luck there was probably something even better there and I am going to be reminded of it for the next 27 weeks!)

There was a piece on BBC breakfast this morning about council housing and there was a video montage of council houses/flats from back in the day and there was a bit of Park Hill flats under construction!

What road is that? I'm struggling to place it? It's not Scotland Street is it looking down to town?

Garden Street. The area around the Cathedral looks really low rise on that pic! I've got a shot of that exact view from last year - I'll see if I can find it.

I think you guys are right- the road at the bottom going back up the hill looks like Hawley Street, pre - Pennine Centre, and St James House is (now) near where there appears to be a cream bus parked at the top.

It is parallel to Scotland Street, but the 4th street up the hill from it. That is Hawley Street and the roundabout you can see in the picture.

That part of garden street is pretty much the same today. I used to use an old building a decade ago and it is still in the shot.

Notice the roadway is still cobbles in the picture.

it won't be for much longer. several of the buildings on the right are due for demolition for a new office and apartment complex between garden street and broad lane.

anyway, back to the point of this thread- ParkHill !! The latest according to Urban Splash is that 3 law firms have got involved to advise the various parties on the deal. that'll speed things up.

I wonder how much it will be slowed down by the listed status as well. No doubt theh listed people will keep sticking their nose in.
