There's a piling rig on the site of the 'Parkway prestigious office' complex - the red one with a flagpole and helipad. Anyone know whether it's going ahead as per the designs we've seen. I'm on my lunch break and don't have time to find the image - sorry!

Oooh exciting. I dunno what's happening, but it'd be great to see that development kick off. I quite liked it. The design seemed decent (and it had a helipad!) and it was a decent height which would create more of an entrance coming down the parkway. I was thinking about this the other day - the flats on your left as you come into town (both the new ones and hyde park) have a great impression on you as you come in. If there was something tall on the right had side to echo it, you'd really think you'd arrived in a big city.

the helipad is nonsense unless it's intended for the south yorkshire police unit. i can't think of anyone else in sheffield who'd use it besides them (and myself when i get that backpack helicopter i'm saving up for).

I Think a small retail park with Park and ride TRam stop and then extend the tram past and all the way to Greenhill fire station round the ring road as most of the roads are wide enogth to run on the verge and it would link up a vast area of extra council estates (Jordanthorpe and Low edges)and better areas Norton, Meadowhead, Greenhill and with bus links Dronfield and Totley).

How about a link from Mannor top down to the arena direct as well possibly through darnil to link the new housing in as well.

Is it required that one has a helicopter to land on a helipad?

Could I, for example, use my Harrier? (as it's V/STOL).

The Ring should be "round" the road, so you pass through the middle IMO,
But could we not get a design that reflects Sheffield's Industrial heritage more.

or perhaps this is a stunt set for incoming helicopters/harriers. blast down the parkway, through the loop and then land on a mediocre office block!

as i've said on other threads, i seriously think sheffield needs to drop the steel industry line with regards to future art works and developments. we have enough!

in many ways it does us no favours and only serves to remind people of those stupid full monty stereotypes we've been so keen to shed for so many years. lets have something which tells people about what sheffield is capable of now and in the future instead.

i read somewhere (a long time ago and it might have been nonsense) that sheffield has a larger percentage of jobs in the creative industries than any other city in england. someone should put these people to good use!

That's what I was implying with the .

Not only is it not a great stereotype to be playing to, very little of the Sheffield population these days will have any kind of connection to steel and cutlery. I know I don't!

Yeah, that creative sector thing is true. If you go to the e-campus site it's got a little showreel with some great facts about the creative industry in it!

sorry paul, i wasn't implying that you were actually in favour of cutlery sculptures! it was more a moan at the council and so called 'creative' bodies.

Fair enough.

Yeah, I agree with you though. It's like the sculpture that E.on are paying for. No doubt it'll end up as a stainless steel knife and fork, but how is that really relative to the city any more (like the giant football idea). Set up a competition for the creative folks from the workstation or wherever to compete in. They're what the city is now and in the future. Unfortunately a couple of guys making cutlery down kelham island for old times sake isn't. (Although credit to them for keeping it alive!)

Also it'd mean we could choose a really inspired bit of artwork.

Brothel fear in massage plan

PLANS for an aromatherapy massage centre in a residential street in Sheffield have been thrown out by councillors - who reckon it's a brothel in disguise.
Councillors refused permission for the house on the corner of Alderson Road and Alderson Place in Highfield after neighbours complained it was being used for "illegal activities".

Officers will now try to close the place down.

A petition with 64 signatures was handed to the council's City Centre planning board claiming the premises attracted "people of questionable character" and the building "looks sinister".

Applicant Stacey Harris wanted to use the building for aromatherapy and massage between 10am and 7pm. She said the typical occupation of the building would be "one client and two staff".

In a letter to planning officers she wrote: "We are situated just off London Road. We are aromatherapy massage. We do not play music or have TVs. We are very quiet and get on with all our neighbours."

But Coun John Hesketh said: "It's ridiculous. I don't believe the current use is smelling oils to ease you after work. It is a brothel. A brothel in a residential street is inappropriate - and we should have the guts to say it. Let's not bottle it."

C
oun Marjorie Barker added: "I don't like to be led up the garden path."

The area's councillor Jean Cromar alleged the address had been operating as a brothel called Kittens.

When The Star contacted Kittens massage parlour the woman who answered confirmed: "Yes darling, we are the one on the corner of Alderson Road. But you will have to phone back tomorrow."

Planning officers had recommended approval for the application - but councillors disagreed. A report to the meeting said: "Planning inspectors on appeal cases have concluded whether such premises are used for marginal or unlawful activity is a matter for other authorities to decide, and also does not make the use objectionable in planning terms.

Planning officer Chris Heeley said: "At the first suggestion of illegal activities we would be informing the police."
