That's a red herring. It costs Peel £13 for every passenger that passes through the door. Hardly ideal for an airport that has never made a profit and has no surplus to call on.

Interesting statistic TMH, but saying that it cost Peel £x per passenger would imply that the best way to cut losses is to stop taking passengers, and that wrong. The losses per passenger will decrease as passenger numbers increase (and vice versa) until we reach a 'tipping point', where one additional passenger results in a net profit per passenger. Obviously as passenger numbers increase so do overheads, but not at the same rate.

There will be a figure at which the airport will be in profit. Whether that PAX figure is attainable is down to calculations made by accountants with more experience than you or I.

There are also other revenue incomes at the airport including cargo, training, rental of hangar space, parking, retail.

It is worth pointing out that the airport is a huge capital project which is a long term investment. As time goes by more and more of the advanced facilites are commissioned and on line. Eventually as the Train station and the Motorway Link also come to be, then the airport will become ever more attractive.

Im sorry, i know i said id leave the thread alone but i do feel i must point out a couple of points, of course there should be nothing wrong with a bit of objectivity..

Airports as multi-modal transport hubs have been proven not to work until they are handling at least 5 million passengers per year, and this still may not be enough assuming movements are lower than an airport with a number of flights on smaller aircraft. This figure is the type which would convince a train operator just to stop at a station as opposed to making it an ultimate destination (i.e Manchester) and will have very very little effect on attracting airlines. Accessability is key only when costs are sustainable relative to patronage if you get my drift.

As for comparing pax figures with other airports, this gives absolutely no clear indication of an airports business. In fact for many airports it is the other uses for a site which create the income and subsequent profit. Particularly for an airport which is based primarily to serve the bread and butter charter/ low cost market.

It is quite clear Peel have a lot of land to play around with at DSA but as yet, private investment from other companies has been negligable. They also rumoured to have turned away AirAtlantique who were interested in opening a maintenance base there. A bad move it would seem.

Any investor who comes on board will do so solely because of the success of Liverpool. Its been told to me that Peel had the same aspirations for DSA but its clear growth is not favoring DSA as much. Remember LPL is yet to break even too. So while a 49% stake would help the future case for Peel Airports, i can see quite substantial cuts in spending at DSA and cuts in overheads. Remember, it will have to be a company with years of expertise in running airports to make a difference, and they may suggest that Peel do things completely differently in future!

If you want to offset the cargo income then it costs even more per passenger I'm afraid. All the numbers are in the public domain.

According to reports Air Atlantique (Classic Flight) wanted to relocate their 20+ aircraft from Coventry but were turned down by Peel in case they wanted the hanger for something else ! ! Aggregate extraction machinery at a guess, though that would be unlikely to bring in the 100,000 visitors that CF expected. Perhaps giving CF a lease wasn't something that Peel were inclined to do?

No matter which way you cut it there simply doesn't appear to be enough chimney pots to sustain this airport.

The path being trodden looks incredibly similar to the one taken at Sheffield City, except that the Sheffield City package made money.

A clear sign of aspirations being FAR too big, most regional airports would be happy to get a gig like that, particularly in these difficult times. Add to that the bad reputation due to Peel taking legal action against BMIBaby and i would say you realy are burying yourself in the S***

Passengers travelling from Doncaster Sheffield Airport will be able to fly to Wroclaw in Poland once again thanks to the reintroduction of the route with Wizz Air.

The news follows the announcement that Wizz Air, the largest low fare - low cost airline in Central and Eastern Europe announced at a press conference in Wroclaw that it would establish its 12th operating base in Wroclaw in July 2010.
Chris Harcombe, Aviation Development Manager for Robin Hood Airport Doncaster Sheffield, said: “This is a welcome boost for the airport and we are delighted that Wizz Air have further strengthened their relationship with Doncaster Sheffield Airport by reintroducing flights to Wroclaw.

“These flights will start from July 19 2010 and add to our already impressive offering to Poland.
“We are continuing to work with Wizz and our other operators to develop our relationship and look at ways to offer more routes and extra flights to attract passengers to Doncaster.”

In the last three years, Wizz Air has offered affordable flights from the Airport to Gdansk, Katowice, Poznan, and Warsaw in Poland with well over 300,000 passengers using these routes.
“Wroclaw will become our fifth base in Poland and Doncaster Sheffield Airport is an important destination from here for us, reinforcing our commitment to the largest market in Wizz Air’s network as well as our leadership on the Polish market. With this move we will further enhance the travel opportunities for millions of Poles in the West of Poland, create hundreds of local jobs in Wroclaw and significant revenue uplift for the tourism industry in the region.” – said John Stephenson, Executive Vice-President of Wizz Air.

Also reported by the BBC last week was that DSA will only have around 3 yes (3/THREE) flights per day during the winter. I know most airports will have a vastly reduced program during the quieter winter months but that is ridiculous.

3 flights on TWO days of the week - the average is about 5 per day, which some airports would be glad to have over winter!

I suppose its less for Peel to fork out considering they effectively sub each passenger.

You are again using the assumption that commercial flights are the sole factor of an airports profitability. I can tell you that an airport not so far away will have 7 flights a day but will still return a profit to its investors next year...

True, very true. I guess it's the upkeep of that lovely long runway they have there.

Travellers from Doncaster will benefit from new destinations, new cruises and extra flights thanks to an announcement that Thomson and First Choice will be boosting their offering from Robin Hood Airport for summer 2010.

Monastir, Tunisia was launched only 2 months ago from Robin Hood Airport for summer 2010. Reacting to high demand and strong early booking sales, Thomson and First Choice has now announced that they will be offering an extra weekly flight to the North African destination, as well as operating an additional weekly flight to Dalaman in Turkey.

Jodi Stow, Marketing and Communications Manager for Doncaster Sheffield Airport said: "This is great news for the airport and a welcome boost for travellers from across the region.

"The total Thomson and First Choice capacity for summer 2010 will now exceed our summer 2009 capacity with almost 6000 extra seats on sale.

"We work closely with Thomson and First Choice and are pleased that strong early bookings have created the demand for these extra flights.

"We have found that people like to book early to travel from Doncaster Sheffield Airport to guarantee the convenience of being able to fly from their local airport."

The new Monastir flight will operate on Sunday's from 23rd May - 31st October with the extra Dalaman flight operating on Thursday's from 27th May for 23 weeks.

Thomson has also put on sale some brand new cruise itineraries that will sail from Marmaris in Turkey. The new Dalaman flights will connect with these itineraries.

So, it's back to Y1 levels. Doesn't look good does it, especially if October turns out to be less than Y1M10

Lloret has gone down hill over recent years though. Tosser is nicer. As for Barcelona, you're better off flying to Barcelona (BCN) Girona is a bit of a trek in all honesty.

Lloret has gone UPhill in recent years. I went as a teenager and again a couple of years ago, and was amazed on the recent visit how trendy and chic it was!

If I was living in Sheffield, I'd definately consider a long weekend from DSA.
