286k in 2001, so prob approaching 300k by now, making it second only to Sheffield in S.Yorks and bigger than Nottingham; comparison because has is own international airport.
It has a 'minster', like York, and Crown Courts, so all they need is a bit of paper signed by the Queen, the region will have two cities, and the good people of Donny will feel much better!

Now it seems we're back on the topic of 'metro areas' again...

Sorry Bladerunner, didn't mean to stray, just answering Starlight's question
![]() We were discussing the impact of Donny getting city status on DSA, he asked for some details...

Superfly, you have a relevant point. If Donny is indeed 3/5 the size of Sheffield, then I don't think Sheffielders can be justified in claiming that our name should be made more prominant.
However, a while ago we had a similar discussion about Rotherham, in which it was claimed that our much-maligned neighbour had a similar population to the figure you claim for Donny. The question asked then was how much of this figure is urban population and how many smaller towns and villages are included in the figure. I'd guess that Donny's urban population isn't much bigger than 150k. |

Unfortunately, the census results don't break down further, into wards etc. and since I do know that Donny's metropolitan borough is quite large, one of the largest in the UK, then yeah, I'd say the poulation of Donny 'the town' is prob around 150k, maybe less...
What I think it does show, however, is that the immediate population to use, work at and service DSA is pretty big, notwithstanding the towns on the N.Lincolnshire side, and is already affecting Donny's economy in a big way. http://www.statistics.gov.uk/census2...the_humber.asp Add to that the illusionary grandeur that being a new city brings, and with the regional capital around 30mins drive away, I can understand why hopes are high.I still think that Sheff having an airport is a good idea, even if for regional and short-haul stuff. There was talk of turning Finningly into and Airport nearly as soon as it closed, before 1997, so I don't understand why either council looked into the sustainability of two aiports in the region, and plan for it!

I've just thought why the Donny moniker probably comes 1st; at the time of deciding the name Sheff had it's very own airport. I think that since it seems more likely that this will not be the case, it's a good argument to reverse them, placing importance before proximity.

'Sheffield Doncaster Airport' would be more than acceptable, but it would mean replacing all official marketing material, signs and stationary, not just on the official website but also with Thomson, Easyjet, Ryanair etc. The code DSA would have to be changed as well. I doubt if it will ever happen.
Hate to say it, but I think 'Sheffield' will gradually disappear from references to the airport. It's already happening in e.g. Thomson's marketing. :-(( |

Maybe but East Midlands changed their airport name to Nottingham EMA. So maybe there is hope of Sheffield International. I thik and hope that they drop the Robin Hood bit whatever as I think it is so tacky and is just used to make the airport well known.

That is BAD, even with Donny's improving profile, it's not a very happening place yet, and will do nothing to remove the hidden jem feeling visitors get from Sheff, sure thats nice, but a properly internationally known name and city is better!
damn you Thompson!!!

Urban area figures are here.
http://www.statistics.gov.uk/StatBas...ank=1&Rank=224 Donny is only 127,851. An interesting side effect if Robin Hood becomes a well established and keeps the name Doncaster Sheffield is that Donny could be seen as a suburb of Sheffield by some people.

I think that after the first five or ten years they might rebrand the airport when it is fully established and familiar across the whole world, if sheffield is seen to provide the majority of the passengers, then it is entirely possible that they might change the name to Sheffield Doncaster.
Although with all this development in sheffield it is possible that the population of sheffield might increase significantly, thereby increasing the sheffield bias of the south yorkshire region. If the smaller south yorkshire towns don't increase, or even have declining populations who knows what would happen? Last edited by muddycoffee; May 6th, 2006 at 09:42 AM. |

South Yorkshire international airport would make most sense in my humble opinion. I thought the 'Robin Hood' bit was a wind-up when the news first came out.

Yes, that would be OK. Many people think of Humberside as Hull's airport. Or how about Sheffield S Yorks Airport?
Whatever, we should ditch Robin Hood. The name means much more to Nottingham and Nottinghamshire than S Yorks. |

Ha ha! Careful Kyle, you'll make the Pittsburgers mad!
Anyway, I guess time will tell on the name, but you can't argue on the benefits the airport will bring on the region, it will do good for us all.

True, true, but no doubt George W would get angry and 'accidentally' fire a nuke at us!
