I just found this hilarious quote on page 5 of this thread:

Quote:
As an England fan, I wont except anything less then playing all our games in the two biggest capacity stadiums
Alright, are Wembley and Old Trafford big enough for ya?

Not sure why people dislike these stadia. I like them. Decent size, good design features, smart capacity solutions e.g. the roof which was lifted in salzburg. These are a bunch of quality venues.

People dislike them because they are so small. 50k should be minimum for big competitions.

It's true. 2008 is probably the last year with stadiums of such a small capacity. But don't forget that it was only in 2004 and 2006 when the real hype about these tournaments started in Europe. Back in 2002 (?) when they chose AT/CH, the EURO was still a secondary event.

Netherland/Belgium 2000 had also just three 50`000 seater stadiums, the rest was also around 30`000.
I think there should be at least 8 stadiums as requirement for the Euro competition, and then say me how many countries (for a single bet) could support 8 modern stadiums with minimum capacity of 50`000, not so many, maybe just England and Germany.
And by the way, the minimum capacity for a world cup is 40`000 per stadium.

the sizes are fine for AUT/SUI. they don't need bigger stadia for the everyday use.

Ye but what does that got to do with rest of the fans? Don't give them to host it if they don't have 50k+ stadiums. That would narrow down potential host countries but... quality over quantity.

That is not true. Architectural quality has nothing to do with capacity and/or size. It's only that the Austrian stadiums look so d*mn cheap with their temporarily stands and angular design.

Yes, they're fine for local use, but are they big enough to hold larger events?

It's impossible to get big enough stadiums for Euro or WC.
There were something like 18 times as many ticket requests as there are seats available for the Euro 08. So even if all the stadiums would be 50k+ it would be way too small.
If only countries with 50+ stadiums were allowed to host, the Euro will only be in England, Spain or Germany the next 20 or so years.
I see such events as a possibilty for smaller nations to build new stadiums, so imo the limit should stay at 30k.

I'll take those Austrian stadiums any day over what Belgium had on offer 8 years ago.

I agree, but if UEFA decides to increase finals to 24 teams, that will also make things more difficult for smaller nations.

I like Klagenfurts stadium the most, very sleek and modern. Capacity is ok i guess for a town of 90k inhabitants.

Yes but Klagenfurt will host group with 3 teams that have probably biggest number of traveling fans. 30k just ain't enough

Don`t keep crying the whole time poor guy! The decision which team plays in which stadium was a draw, except the host teams. Or do you mean Croatia needs a special treatment??

When did i mention anything about us? It would be the same if we got to play on any other stadium... my point was that such big tournaments have to be played on big stadiums. If that means that only countries like Germany, England, France etc. will host it... well i'm fine with it.

I'm not fine with it. The WC is for big nations to host.
