yes i agree, people of this city really dont realise what a great one it is, and what potential it has.

I like a lot of the ideas/images for the moor in that video, but overall that productions is a joke. It looks so amateurish.

Sheffield was always described as "a mucky picture is a golden frame", a quote relating to the smoke and pollution of the past, and the fact that the city is cradled by hills and wonderful countryside. However, what people failed to realise was that whilst the picture was mucky, underneath there was a Monet oil-painting. This has shone through in recent year only in the people of Sheffield, but now it is starting to shine through in the place as well.
I love this city, and it has so much potential to be so much greater.

Went to the exhibition today (pavillion on the moor - open tomorrow) and it was a fairly modest affair. They have that video on a loop on screen, several boards and three models.
Of most interest Block 1 - next to debenhams - incorporates the building above Empire Bar, and is where the proposals for a 'three-step' tower fit in. Its looks ok on the model but the render(I may get a pic tomorrow) looks a bit rubbish. Tall though.

I went and had a look at it aswell. Not much that I didn't already know from on here though :-P
Just a few points: 1. I didn't realise how large the markets building is gonna be. Seems like it takes up a large chunk of the Moor. 2. The towers on the block next to Debenhams look quite interesting, and reasonably tall. I just hope they turn out well. 3. The tower at the end of the Moor, although only an outline, looked like they're planning to have it shaped quite interestingly. |

yea i went too. erm i wasnt particularly impressed. the tower next to debenhams was just three boring boxes with a random window pattern, and very little glass. i counted 21 floors. it would be fine as a filler i suppose. overall im not particularly impressed by the whole scheme but if thats what we are having then itll have to do. there were also some massing models to give a height example of all surrounding buildings. and there was quite a tall looking building where wickes is, and another fairly large one where the old mcdonalds used to be. I also noticed the tower at the end of the moor, it seemed to have a curve along one side and several stepped setbacks along the other.

The Moorfoot tower looked good, but I can't help but think it'll really block off the Moor from London Rd/Eccy Rd, as if Manpower didn't do that already.
The Debenhams Towers looked good, but could be a bit more interesting, and on a site like the Moor, taller..

An application has been put in for the multistory car park that's gonna be attatched to the markets. No pics yet though.
Does this mean that the Moor works could start soon? If so, it looks like 2007 could be a very exciting year, what with St. Pauls under construction, work starting on the NRQ and work starting on the Moor. |

Just browsing this thread - very exciting looking development indeed. Multistorey car parks or just any permanent car park is usually the first thing to be proposed fully for example (sorry, I have to use Birmingham as an example) the planning app for the car park at the Bullring was the first thing handed in (it was just constructed at the same time as the shopping centre and not completed before it because the bridge had to be put in at the right time between it and Selfridges). Another example is the multistorey car park to go behind Millennium Point in Birmingham. This is the first detailed app to be handed in as part of the Ventureast development which is huge. So, just to summarise if you're confused, this may well be the precursor to something great for the Moors!

i remember the carpark being present in the models at the exhibition. it seemed alright as far as carparks go (if the reality is anything like the model of course). not as interesting as the st pauls one but more interesting than the one at the station. mmmmmmmmulti-storey.

Also an article from today's Star. http://www.sheffieldtoday.net/ViewAr...icleID=1866144 Last edited by unners; November 9th, 2006 at 04:27 PM. |

Sounds good from their description. Like the sound of the 23 story residential tower. I think if each floor is 3.5 metres, the tower would be 80m.
Only thing that sound's a bit dodgy is; Quote:

either upgrade the whole lot to look similar to the rest of the city, or give the whole place it's own charater. Not sure about splitting it!

doesn't it mean that they'll do one half at a time? it would make sense if they're redeveloping it in stages.

It says in Friday's telegraph that the application is in for for the block near debenhams and the 23 storey tower, has anyone got any more detailed renders and images for this project - it looks like the single most important development sheffield has seen since st paul's place?
I think its going to take a hell of a lot of work to improve 'Charter Square'? At the moment it is a totally anonymous place - the only reason you would go there is passing through on a bus or driving to a car park. Its a bit grand to call it a 'square'! The only way this area is going to have any life is to link the moor with the retail quarter. A bus interchange is a rubbish idea - why not introduce another pedestrian street and shops either side rather than sticking to the post war street plan? That way the city would look a lot more joined up. Hopefully the reason Debenhams is not yet being demolished is to wait and see what the final NRQ plans are and to then try to integrate the moor better into the city than it is at the moment. The plan is to link the NRQ with the Moor, indeed the new flagship John Lewis store is to stnad where the fire station is now.

Yeah I know that John Lewis is going to be there and there's going to be an entrance to the NRQ glass covered section by there too. I just think that the Debenhams building is very dated looking and from the fire station area it stands in the way of the moor rather than inviting people to explore it. Maybe the square would be better having some attractive restaurants or shops rather than the back entrance of debenhams.
Actually when I spoke to a lady at the exhibition she said that they were trying to persuade Debenhams to move in to a new store and hoped that the other new development would encourage them to upgrade in to a better building. They've got quite a few years to improve the square though before the NRQ opens so I'm positive there's plenty of time to sort it out. |

I thought the Debenhams building was gonna be redeveloped aswell. Are they not gonna do the same thing as they will with John Lewis, build the new store, move them and then do work on the old store?
What I think it would be great if they demolished the Debenhams store, and made Charter Square into a really nice big open area (like at the top of fargate). It would link the Moor with the rest of town better. |
