Let me start with the highways, altough this has already been posted in the Eastern European Highways thread...
MACEDONIAN HIGHWAYS Two major european corridors pass through Macedonia and intersect in Skopje. The east-west Corridor 10 Varna(BG)-Sofia(BG)-Skopje(MK)-Tirana(AL)-Durres(AL)-Bari(I) and the north-south Corridor 8 Vienna(A)-Ljubljana(SLO)-Zagreb(HR)-Belgrade(SCG)-Skopje(MK)-Thessaloniki(GR)-Athens(GR). On the map you have the sections of these corridors passing through Macedonia together with the subsection of Corridor 10 (Prilep-Bitola-Igoumenitsa(GR) and the branch leading to Kosovo. Here is a legend for the map RED - CONSTRUCTED HIGHWAYS GREEN - UNDER CONSTRUCTION YELLOW - PLANNED HIGHWAYS The map also shows the network of regular roads throughout Macedonia, which are mostely in good condition. Of course there are existing regular roads on the planned routes for highways as well. ![]() The ring road around Skopje is currently under construction and will be finished until 2008. The basic groung preparations on the section of the Corridor 10 missing in the southern part are currently under preparation. It is the harders part of the route, passing through a canyon and there will be loads of bridges and tunnels. Here are some pictures even though some are old. A PLANNED JUNCTION ON THE SKOPJE RING ROAD ![]() CORRIDOR 10 - SECTION TETOVO-GOSTIVAR ![]() CORRIDOR 10 - SECTION KUMANOVO-SERBIAN BORDER ![]() CORRIDOR 10 - SECTION SKOPJE-KUMANOVO ![]() ![]() ![]() CORRIDOR 10 - SECTION GEVGELIJA-NEGOTINO ![]() ![]() CORRIDOR 10 - SECTION GRADSKO-NEGOTINO ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() CORRIDOR 8 - SECTION SKOPJE-TETOVO ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]()

djurob are you aware that the corridor 10 highway between Negotino-Gevgelija is going to slice through the middle of a recently discovered ancient city termed "vardarski-rid" forgot its ancient name. Anyways they have/are destroying 1/3 of this ancient town and its artifacts just because they didnt want to shift the route of the highway ten meters!!
This is what they also did to the roman city of Stobi when they built the athens-ljubljana highway right through the middle of it, ruining much of its 2000year old artifacts. What is it with the macedonian government, roads are more important than preserving ancient sites! |

The Slovenian group Hidria which deals with production of automotive parts wants to invest in Macedonia. The investment should go through its "daughter" company Rotomatika. The Slovenes are interested to invest either in a green field investment or by buying and modernizing an existing factory.

Here is a small pic of the ancient site "vardarski rid" near Gevgelija (1st millenium b.c).. you can see that a whole chunk of the mountain which consisted of artifacts 3thousand years old, are destroyed with the construction of corridor 10.

I'm surprised, I expected to see something similar like here...I mean, I knew you had some highways built in times of Yugoslavia, but you're actually building new highways, congratulations ;)
And Stevan, yeah, I way surprised s few years ago (when I was driving on Zagreb - Belgrade highway) to see that these yellow lines are actually orange in Vojvodina. And later near Belgrade they even became white! Now, is there any rule about that, can SiCG do that? On our fast road they're yellow, and in Croatia/Austria/France/Germany/Italy those lines are also yellow. Are you Belgraders trying to be different or what :) |

GreatMakedon as far as I know this is another one of those stories that follow every single project in Macedonia. The Lumiks building, the ring road of Skopje, the American embassy......... even the last freakin McDonalds constructed in Skopje. A small group of people making a lot of noise over a non existing problem and postponing every single project for no reason... Anyways, as for Vardarski Rid it is true that there is a ancient settelment there. But it is also true that with joint funding by Mobimak, the road agency, the monument preservation agency and few others, the ruins have been conservated and the section of the highway that passes there and that has already been finished for some 3-4 years now, does not do any harm to them.

The next priority is finishing the east-west corridor and the last on the list is the subsection through Prilep-Bitola-Greek border. But all these routes have great roads now as well, with extra lane on uphills for slow vechiles etc.... I'll try to find some pictures of the regular roads as well....

Mitsubishi will decide by March if it will construct a new factory in Macedonia. Company representatives visited Macedonia and were satisfied from what they've seen. The main objections were on the high transport costs and some of the taxes. Macedonia is competing with Denmark, Bulagria, Romania and Turkey for the new factoruy. To factory should be constructed in the town of Prilep in a new free trade zone which needs to be set up. Mitsubishi is already cooperating with the Prilep factory of Metalec and they are about to sign an agreement for joint production of steel columns for electricity transport and electricity production aggregates.

The road between bitola and ohrid is bad and if they could build a highway between those two cities that would of been great

The Prilep based factory Proluks will start to assemble the first Macedonian dishwashers. The new section of the factory will assemble dishwashers and different types of small ovens and stoves.
Proluks is a joint venture by the Veles company Leov and a greek partner. SOURCE: Total Quote:

This one should be here as well. I've already posted it in Skopje construction thread
![]() The second largest ski centar in Europe is currently under construction in Macedonia (well the second largest in Europe is probably some typical Balkan bragging but from what I know, it will be the largest on the Balkans, maybe you guys can pitch in some numbers about Kopaonik, Borovec, Jahorina....... so we can compare). The ski center will cover 1200 hectars out of which 500 hectars will be ski tracks. Within the ski center a complex of 360 appartments (with 1600 beds) will be constructed, then 5 star hotel with capacity of 700, a complex of weekend private houses (710 of them), 27 smaller hotels, shopping & leasure area with 80 stores, restaurants and cafes, church, indoor and outdoor sport fascilities, multipurpose arena for concerts, seminars etc with a capacity of 1200 etc. The whole complex is designed to handle over 10.000 tourists in a weekend. The ski trails will be for everyone. There will be slalom, grand slalom, downhill, halfpipe, begginer, motor sledge tours etc............. The capacity of the cable cars and ski lifts will be 14.000 people/hour. Just for comparation the 2 current largest ski centers in Macedonia (Popova shapka and Mavrovo) can handle 5.000 people/hour. And they are not small ski centers at all. The overall capacity of the center is 5 times bigger than all the other Macedonian ski centers combined (there are 6 of them but only 2 are larger). The initial cost of the project is 75 million euros out of which 21 million have already been gathered and the rest are negotiated with potential investors. Among the investor is probably the Hotel chain Kempinski, who announced a probable investment in one of the MK ski centers in 2008. The center should be finished by 2008. Construction started 5 months ago with some of the basic infrastructure and the first ski lift which is already operating. However the center will offer the first commercial test skiing next year. For next year the access roads are planned to be constructed as well as some of the cable cars, parts of the residential and shopping area. There is already interest for the individual houses which price is 750EUR/sq meter, mostely from Macedonians and Greeks. The ski centar Kozuv is located on the mountain Kozuv in southern Macedonia, close to the towns of Gevgelija and Kavadarci and very close to the Greek border. It is about 160km from Skopje (mostely hughway) and 100km from Thessaloniki. These two cities are the main target of the center, even though it will target foreign tourists as well. The center will have its own shuttle busses to Skopje and Thessaloniki airports as well as 4 VIP helicopters for richer people which will pick them up directly from the airports. The altitude of the ski center is 2.200 meter above the sea. The area is also very beautiful, picturesque and untouched. It offers activites for 4 seasons even though the majour tourist influx is of course expected in winter. There are thermas only 15km away. SOURCE Quote:
