seems to me vancouver often looks better on pictures than in real life, lived for 5 years in vancouver, and rarely appreciate its beauty. But now after moving to toronto, I am starting to like the vancovuer skyline.

Pic of the top showing the double height scaffolding for the box taken by me today, October 11, 2007 (taken through dirty tinted glass). Also note where the secondary elevator core tops out - level 43 (the inserted floor) is I think the last floor with that elevator - that could be that floor unless there's space for elevator mechanical in the core shown - I'll let someone else figure that out.

I snapped a photo from my apartment this afternoon of the Shangri-La Vancouver. You can clearly see the stepping of the elevator shafts that OfficeDweller pointed out in his photo.

So Vancouverite do you know how many levels have been completed so far of the total 61? Cause I'm having a difficult time counting the levels.

There are even differences in luminosity on the Renzo Piano tower. In the absence of visible shadows it makes me think that the Dutch panel array is electrically illuminated and several panels appear to not be working, hence their lower luminosity.
Could be right, but if you've been to Holland, you will notice that they don't shy away from bright colours. Colour in Canada usually means an earth tone or muted shade. It's hard to find anything bright red, ocean blue, or yolk yellow. People would freak out. I'm not suggesting that we start building skyscrapers with these colours, but we are definitely timid when it comes to colour.

Well the company that is building the Shangri-La had an ad in the paper saying it was 48 storeys tall, which would just about make it the building with the greatest number of floors in the city but there is some ongoing confusion about the counting scheme. There will be 59 physical floors that will be numbered to 61 levels. Floors 8 and 13 are not being labeled as such for superstitious reasons. 13 is an unlucky number in many Western cultures while it is my understanding that 8 is an unlucky number in the Chinese culture because the character for the number eight looks very similar to the character of death.

So, if the Shangri-La has had 48 physical storeys built to date then there are 11 more to be built, plus the equivalent of 5 or 6 more storeys for mechanical storeys and the decorative "fins" on the roof.

On the other hand, if there have been 48 numbered storeys, meaning 46 physical floors, then there would be 13 more physical floors to be built, plus the 5 or 6 mechanical storeys and the decorative "fins" on the roof.

I'm not sure if that clears it up. One way or another the bottom line is that about 80% of the building's floors have been built to date and the tower is about 75% of its final full height.

I don't disagree with that at all, with the exception of some of the traditional houses in the Maritimes' outports.

I though the number "8" was considered to be a lucky number in many Asian countries?

Not in the Chinese culture. "8" in Chinese sounds like the same word that also means fortune...and "4" sounds like the same word as death.

^ My mistake.

Then it is the 4th floor that is being omitted from the numbering scheme along with 13. It is all rather silly to me. It goesn't take a Nobel Lauret to understand that the 4th and 13th floors are still there but it's their building, they can name the floors whatever they like.

My apartment building has 1000 storeys, we just don't use the numbers 3-999 for a variety of reasons.

There doesn't seem to be too much visible progress on the podium in the last week. However here is a webcam shot from this afternoon, Sunday October 14th.

Here is the progress to date from what I could see today...

Red=currently topped at
Green=current floor being worked on

It shouldn't be anymore than a day or two before it goes up a floor... if it hasn't already at the time I'm typing this. I have a feeling that it may have.

Webcam...
