It's actually a old proposal but its still being looked into. However, their is only like a 30-40% chance that it will be made now.

^ on a day like yesterday, half of the tower would've been covered in clouds.

sometimes, i'm quite amazed how low our cloud ceiling is.

A guy on Flickr (http://www.flickr.com/photos/bsoleil/) took some amazing shots on Valentine's day of downtown Vancouver from a sea plane.

I think this is one of my favourites for downtown Vancouver and the Shangri-La. I love the haze as the sun burns off the early morning clouds. 1000-acre Stanley Park is in the foreground.

Source

A long lens shot of the Shangri-La's oblique angle.

Lastly, a shot of downtown with the Shangri-La barely noticeable against the background mass of towers. At the lower left of the frame is a nice bonus aerial view of the Olympic Village under construction.

Source

Oddly enough, the elevated freeway at the lower centre of the frame abruptly ends mere metres beyond the extent of the photo. Thankfully this was all that was built of the first phase of an extensive urban elevated freeway network. Instead we decided to build a regional rapid transit network and the City of Vancouver concentrated a great deal of its residential growth into the downtown core and the surrounding traditional streetcar-suburb neighbourhoods.

Nice update, I love the density. This tower is a refreshing new height for the city skyline.

PS. Not so much snow in the mountains, seems to be a mild winter there too, just like in Europe.

Vancouver is usually quite mild in the winter but this year I would say it has been exceptionally mild. We only had a few weeks of below 0 temps and the last two weeks have been sunny and in the plus 10 range.
