‘Call-a-Rik’ at your doorstep for Rikshaw ride in Karachi

Karachi: If you are a Karachiite and want to have a luxurious rickshaw ride than there is a good news for you, Call-a-Rik at your door-step for an affordable price of Rs10 per kilometer.

The Call-a-Rik project, launched by Penta Enterprises on July 24, initially has 27 rickshaws with spotless doors and glass windows. The rickshaws’ backseats are as big as Suzuki Mehran, an LCD screen for entertainment, and headphones for every passenger to buffer the noise outside.

The Vehicle is designed in considering the Passenger’s comfort. “It is safe and secure from sound & dust pollution. Passenger’s especially accompanying children safety is our prime objective. You can see that its lockable doors will keep you and your clothes safe from dust,” the company claims.

“Each vehicle is installed with a tracking device so that our office knows exactly where each and every passenger is. If you put your child in one of our ricks you can find his exact location from us whenever you want,” Pakistan leading English daily The News quoted Mohsin Dharsi, as company representative, as saying.

The vehicles, manufactured and assembled in Pakistan, will travel to any place in Karachi, apart from Lyari, North Karachi and Kati Pahari, and a few more conflict-ridden areas. However the company charge Rs.10 per kilometer but Rs100 is the minimum fair of any ride below 10 kilometer.

The project aims to increase the number of rickshaws in the city to 100 by December, and after that there are plans of introducing them in the cities of Lahore and Islamabad.
“We have received an overwhelming response by the public, way more than expected. Yesterday, I received a call from a Pakistani living in Germany who wanted to invest in 50 rickshaws with me.”
Dharsi claims that he has also received feedback from friends in Bangladesh, who want to replicate the project there.

“It is neither a Taxi nor a Rickshaw. We have named it “RIK”,” the company says.
You can call or SMS for booking at 0331-CALLRIK (2255 745).

I'm not sure the LCD and headphone idea was good but the overall idea is great. Someone could also start airport/railway station shuttle services like they have in US, if its not already there

Pakistan has given a Dubai property firm the go-ahead for a $43bn (£22.8bn) project to develop two island resorts.
Emaar Properties, one of the United Arab Emirates' biggest property firms, will have an 85% share in the 13-year project to develop Bundal and Buddo.

Emaar plans to develop the site near Karachi into a model city with homes, apartments, offices and theme parks.

"It will be just like another Dubai," Ashfaque Hasan Khan, an adviser to the prime minister said.

"We want to build it because it will create new jobs, bring in investment, create new housing and a new city," he added.

Pakistan's Port Qasim Authority will hold the remaining 15% stake in the enterprise in the form of land, the government said.

So far the plans have been approved in principle. Legal documents are expected to be completed within three months.

What is the point of posting 6year old news of the project which is dead?

Canadian firm to launch public transport project in Sindh

A Canadian organisation ‘Bridge Communication & Research’, working on a number of USAID projects, has shown its interest to launch a public transport project in Sindh to ease the problems faced by the commuters in Karachi as well as inter-city travelers.

Syed Naeemuddin and his companion Sohail, originally hailing from Karachi but settled in USA, and working for Bridge Communication & Research Organisation of Canada, showed their willingness at a meeting of governing body of Karachi Public Transport Society (KPTS), recently held with provincial transport secretary Nazar Muhammad Kalhoro in the chair.

They informed the meeting that the project would be funded by USAID and executed by Bridge Communication & Research Organisation. “We are putting up our efforts for procurement of buses to run it through KPTS,” he told.

Shamsuddin Abro, Administrator, KPTS, informed the meeting that Canadian organisation had sought proposals for the project and the KPTS has proposed 3000 buses in the first phase of which 500 for Karachi city and rest for interior of Sindh. The buses proposed for Karachi would have capacity of 70 (40 seats plus 30 standing passengers) while the inter-city buses would have 52 seats capacity to carry seat-by-seat passengers.

Welcoming the Canadian Company’s project, secretary transport assured that Sindh government would extend every possible cooperation including provision of depots and other facilities.

Syed Naeemuddin of Canadian organisation, who is in Pakistan for monitoring the ongoing projects run through USAID grant, said the proposed transport project would be run by NGO (KPTS), however, his organisation would keep watch on its execution.

Bridge Communication & Research Organisation’s delegation, which is currently in Islamabad, would return and meet Sindh Chief Secretary and other concerned officials of government to finalise the matters before signing the Memorandum of Understanding with KPTS.
