50-jet order expected for Boeing

Thursday, February 03, 2005

Japan Air Lines is poised to announce imminently a massive order for narrow-body jet airplanes, and there's reason to believe Boeing has won it.

A person in the Japanese aviation industry said that Boeing has bested Airbus for a contract that includes a firm order for as many as 50 jets with options for perhaps 30 more. Deliveries are to start in 2007, he said.

Since mid-October, Japan Air Lines (JAL) has been considering Boeing's next-generation 737 jet, built in Renton, in competition with Airbus' A320. A contract of that size would be worth about $3.25 billion to Boeing at list prices.

Reached in Tokyo late yesterday, JAL spokesman Geoffrey Tudor insisted that the competition to supply JAL's airplane had not yet been decided. He said the mix of firm orders and options had not been finalized, and that the number cited by the Japanese source was "over the top."

But he said that an announcement Friday morning Tokyo time — late today in Seattle — is "very possible."

"I'm sitting here with two press releases," Tudor said. Asked if one press release announced a Boeing win and the other an Airbus win, he responded: "That's about it."

A Boeing spokesman said he had no information about an imminent deal.

According to the Japanese aviation source, who said he learned details from a participant in the negotiations, JAL took final proposals from the two airplane manufacturers a week ago but had then reopened the bidding.

In January, he said, Airbus' price had been lowest, but Boeing's price later came down and in the final proposals it offered the better deal.

With JAL's history of 11th-hour deals, further delay or a last-minute change to the order could not be ruled out, he said.

JAL merged last year with Japan Air Systems (JAS) to equal the size of its rival All Nippon Airways.

JAL now has a fleet of 278 aircraft. Because JAS flew Airbus and McDonnell Douglas jets, while the heritage JAL company flew Boeing jets, the fleet is a mix of many different models. The airline plans to reduce those to create operational efficiencies.

Its narrow-body fleet has 42 older McDonnell Douglas planes and 23 older 737 classic aircraft, all ripe for replacement.

In addition, JAL has big expansion plans.

In December, JAL placed an order for 30 of Boeing's new mid-size jets, the 787, formerly designated the 7E7.

If the JAL narrow-body order also goes to Boeing, then the U.S. manufacturer will have effectively sewn up the Japanese market.

Yesterday, All Nippon signaled with an order for two 777s and a conversion of two other orders to 777s that it will go with Boeing exclusively for the foreseeable future.

JAL's fleet-renewal strategy is tied to the forthcoming major expansion at Tokyo's Haneda airport, the biggest domestic hub in Japan, which handles 70 percent of total domestic air traffic and is currently at full capacity.

Haneda is the sixth-largest airport in the world in terms of passengers passing through.

A fourth runway is expected to be completed in about 2009, giving domestic Japanese airlines a big boost in flight frequencies.

Until now, airlines operating out of Haneda have coped with the congestion by flying big airplanes into the restricted landing slots. With the airport expansion, JAL plans to use smaller airplanes flying new routes.

Japan Airlines chooses Boeing over Airbus

Japan Airlines Orders Next-Generation Jets From Boeing in $1.8 Billion Deal

The Associated Press
Published: Feb 4, 2005

TOKYO (AP) - Japan Airlines is ordering 30 jets from Boeing Co. in a contract worth about $1.8 billion, the companies said Friday.

The order for the 737NG, which stands for "next generation," follows an order by Japan Airlines in December for 30 of Boeing's new widebody jets called the 787, formerly dubbed the 7E7.

Chicago-based Boeing applies the "next generation" tag to its 700, 800 and 900 versions of the 737, and Japan Airlines did not specify which mix of those models it will select.

The 737NG, an improved version of the older 737 series, are longer versions that seat about 180 people and are billed as requiring low operational costs.

Friday's order includes an option to buy 10 more in the spring. JAL plans to begin the 737 flights next year.

JAL said it was placing the orders for domestic flights ahead of an expansion at Tokyo's Haneda Airport.

The fuel-efficient Boeing 787 is due to go into service in 2008.

Japan Airlines said Friday it would buy up to 40 aircraft from Boeing of Chicago.

Asia's largest air carrier, in terms of sales, said the new 737 airplanes would replace its current fleet of 737 and McDonnell Douglas models.

JAL said it had already placed orders for 30 planes, to be delivered next year. The company also said it might order another 10 planes from Boeing.

France's Airbus had been in competition with Boeing for orders from the airline, but JAL Vice President Fumio Tsuchiya said that Boeing won out because the carrier wants to keep the variety of aircraft makes and models in its fleet at a minimum.

The bulk of JAL's 280 planes are from Boeing.

thank, Isan.
yes, best decision for JAL.

and next oder to Boeing is this?

This airport would be clean and practical for passengers but not very much super magnificent or over convenient since Japanese government is now doing best efforts for structual reforming of the government financial spending.

This airport is looking forward to business passengers in chubu area -especially for auto industry.

JAL to increase Flight Frequency between Tokyo-Chicago and Tokyo-Qingdao, China

8 February 2005

JAL is to increase the number of flights on its Tokyo – Chicago and Tokyo – Qingdao routes.

From March 27, 2005, the current seven flights per week service between Chicago and Tokyo will increase by three flights per week making a total of 10 flights per week. The three new flights will depart from Narita Airport at 14:40, making possible same day connections to Chicago for travellers from Beijing, Shanghai, Seoul and Taipei. The new schedule is a response to the steady growth of passenger traffic between China and the USA. The creation of an afternoon departure from Chicago will also increase the selection of connections from many cities across North America.

On July 1st, 2005 on China routes, JAL will increase the present five weekly flights between Tokyo and Qingdao, China by an additional two flights per week, creating a daily service. Because of this increase in flights, JAL's Japan-China network, already the largest passenger network between Japan and China, will operate 234 weekly flights on 28 routes linking 13 cities. JAL plans to continue to increase its flights in the China market, where sustained growth is expected.

From where does this airport's traffic usually come from? I thought primarily Tokyo's int'l airport is Narita.

Nagoya and JAL prepare for Opening of New Airport - Centrair

10 February 2005

On February 16, a unique Japan Airlines charter flight bound for the Pacific resort island of Saipan carrying a mixed group of 206 aviation enthusiasts and people who like to experience special commemorations, will be the last international departure from Nagoya’s Komaki Airport, taking off at 8:45 p.m. that night for the three and a half hour flight to the tropical destination.

But the passengers will not be enjoying Saipan’s tropical charms for long. Arriving there at ten minutes after one a.m. in the morning of February 17, the group will spend just two hours 45 minutes on the island. At 3.55 a.m. local time they leave to return to Nagoya at 6:30 a.m. to be the very first international flight to land on the opening day of the brand new Chubu International Airport, known as Centrair. The Boeing 767-300ER charter aircraft will be specially decorated for the occasion with the Centrair mascot on the fuselage.

The special once-only tour, jointly organized by JAL’s tour wholesale subsidiary JALPAK and the Japan Travel Bureau (JTB) to commemorate the opening of Centrair, was sold out within minutes of being posted on the JALPAK web site last December. As of February 10 there were still more than 200 hopefuls on the waiting list for cancellations.

Apart from the unique experiences of closing down one airport and opening another, the passengers also get a number of special treats. These include:

- Commemorative photo-opportunities with JAL cabin attendants
- Dining in-flight with the special menu that will be served on JAL’s new flight from Nagoya to Paris, to be inaugurated on February 17, including the local specialty, Kochin chicken.
- Discount coupons for US$15.00 if they spend more than US$70.00 at Saipan Airport duty free shops
- An in-flight prize draw
- Observation of their historic arrival at Centrair by personal video monitors on the aircraft
- An original commemorative plate present
- An original JAL baggage tag present
- A free ticket to the hot spring bath at the Centrair Airport Terminal, where they can lie and soak while watching aircraft take-off and land

The Centrair Bath

If the charter fliers use their free bath tickets, they will be able to lie and soak while watching the JAL Group’s first domestic flight leave the new airport, a JAL Express 737-400 flight JC3273 heading for Kumamoto, in Kyushu, at 7:20 a.m. followed 15 minutes later by a JAL domestic flight, JL3201 - the 7:35 a.m. departure for Fukuoka, also in Kyushu.

At 9.00 a.m. the bathers can observe the very first international flight departure from Centrair, JAL 613 bound for Shanghai’s Pudong Airport.

This will be followed at 10:00 by the inauguration flight of Japan Airlines’ new daily B777 service from Nagoya to Paris. This flight, JL437, will be seen off by local dignitaries including the governor of Aichi Prefecture, assisted by Miss Nagoya, Miss France, the president of JAL International, Katsuo Haneda and Air France executives.

Passengers on this new Paris JAL flight will be able to sample Nagoya cuisine. The in-flight menu features grilled Kochin chicken, a Nagoya regional breed renowned for its succulent flavour - (also served on the special Saipan charter flight). JAL will be providing more Nagoya treats on the return flight menus from Paris, including ‘’Tenmusu’’, rice balls with a savoury topping of deep-fried shrimp and ‘’Kishimen’’, a dish of flat, wheat noodles served in soup.

Japan Asia Airways, the Group subsidiary operating Japan-Taiwan services, takes off at 10:00 also with flight EG283 for Taipei.

New Business Chance for JAL

Apart from the razzmatazz of the aviation fans’ charter flight, and the other ceremonies and celebrations on February 17, the opening of Centrair represents a major new business chance for the JAL Group, providing JAL with the opportunity to expand its operations in Japan and Asia and to introduce new services to Europe and China.

Europe: The new daily Nagoya-Paris flight is a code share operation with Air France. The new flight will link to an additional 8 cities across Europe via JAL code-share flights with Air France from Charles de Gaulle Airport, Paris.

China: Additionally, JAL is inaugurating on February 18 a three times weekly flight between Nagoya and Guangzhou that will increase the number of Chinese destinations served by the airline from Nagoya to five. JAL`s total China services from Nagoya will increase to 31 a week (including code-share flights), and as a result, its total Japan-China passenger network will increase to 219 flights per week on 27 routes: the largest Japan-China network currently available. (JAL’s total weekly Japan-China flights will increase to 234 per week from July).

Korea: JAL services to Korea will substantially increase from 11 to 21 flights a week with expansion of its Nagoya-Busan service from 4 to 7 flights a week, and the establishment of a new 7 flights per week service in code share with Korean Air. Flights to Bangkok, Thailand will be increased from three flights a week to a daily service.

USA: From April 4, JAL and American Airlines will launch a new daily non-stop flight between Nagoya and Chicago, operated by American Airlines’ 777-200 aircraft.

Cargo

JAL will also boost international cargo services at the new airport, with three weekly 747 all-cargo aircraft routed Hong Kong-Nagoya-USA. Komaki Airport did not have the runway length for long-range international cargo freighter operations.

Domestic

JAL`s twice-daily feeder services on the Nagoya-Narita route will increase in capacity benefiting Chubu region passengers making international transfers at Narita, Tokyo, with the introduction of 150-seat 737 types. Services between Nagoya-Fukuoka will increase by 3 flights per day to 8 daily flights daily, and those between Nagoya-Sapporo will increase by 1 flight per day to 6 daily.

Nagoya's Komaki Airport – Still in Business

Although all JAL’s international flight and most JAL domestic flight operations now based at Nagoya’s Komaki Airport will move to Centrair when it opens, J-Air, a JAL Group commuter subsidiary operating CRJ-200 regional jets will serve Komaki in response to an expected rise in demand in the region.

Japan Airlines Applies For 2% International Air Fare Hike

02-10-05 04:53 AM EST

TOKYO -(Dow Jones)- Japan Airlines Corp. (9205.TO) said Thursday that it has filed an application with the Ministry of Land, Infrastructure and Transport for approval to hike its international fares from April 1, 2005.

The airline company known as JAL hopes to alleviate the impact of high fuel prices by passing on the costs to customers.

JAL proposed to raise normal First, Business and Economy fares on routes departing from Japan by 2%. The exceptions will be fares to Central and South America where it aims to lift fares by 2% to 8%.

Fares between Japan and South East Asia, China and Micronesia were excluded from the application. These fares will be subject to a later filing, JAL said in a press release.

Fares between Japan and South East Asia, China, and Micronesia, were excluded from the application this time, but will be subject to a later filing. If the filing is implemented, normal First, Business and Economy fares on routes departing from Japan will increase by 2%. The exceptions will be fares to Central and South America where the range of increase will vary from 2% to 8% according to fare category.

New Kitakyushu Airport

Scheduled to open in October 2005, this full-scale airport will be built over the Suo Sea, and will be able to handle take-offs and landings by jumbo jets. The new airport, being constructed as a replacement for the current Kitakyushu Airport, will be erected on an artificial island with an area of 373 ha, offering a single runway 2500 meters long and 60 meters wide, operating round-the-clock.

Japan inaugurates third international airport
(AFP)

13 February 2005

TOKYO - Japan’s third international airport was inaugurated on Sunday, ahead of its opening next week, in a ceremony attended by about 700 people including Crown Prince Naruhito.

The Central Japan International Airport, built on a man-made island off Aichi prefecture in central Japan, is due to open on Thursday.

It will offer flights to 28 foreign cities and 24 domestic cities, with some 12 million passengers expected to use the airport a year, officials said.

“I hope the airport will contribute to the economy of our country as a major basis of distribution,” Naruhito told the ceremony.

The nation’s other international gateways are Narita near the capital Tokyo and Kansai near Osaka, western Japan.

The new airport, known locally as Centrair, features a 3,500-metre (11,550- foot) runway and will be open 24 hours a day.

It will be a key transport hub for the 2005 World Exposition, which runs from March 25 through September 25.
