Japan Airlines violated safety rules
Friday 25th February, 2005 (UPI)

Japan Airlines flew five of its aircraft, even though it knew they did not meet safety standards, a local newspaper reported Friday.

The Asahi Shimbun said that Japan's biggest airline flew some of its planes even as they exceeded weight limits by using support devices. The devices are not supposed to be used in flight.

The newspaper said one cargo plane made 7,500 flights over the past eight years, even while the company knew it did not meet safety standards.

But the company was reprimanded by the Transport Ministry, and JAL officials said that such violations of regulations no longer happen.

Tuesday, March 1, 2005 at 11:48 JST

TOKYO — A Japan Airlines aircraft attempted to take off without approval from air traffic control at an airport in Hokkaido on Jan 22, the airline and other sources said Tuesday.

JAL did not report the incident to the authorities for nearly a month. The Ministry of Land, Infrastructure and Transport reprimanded the company last week for failing to report the incident. (Kyodo News)

JAL to launch International Flight Web Check-in
2 March 2005

From April 1, 2005, the JAL Group is to launch a new Web check-in service for international flights on most routes on the JAL Group network (excluding flights departing from Paris, Zurich, Moscow, Hanoi, Ho Chi Minh, Xiamen, Xian, Qingdao, Hangzou, Dalian and Tianjin, and code-share flights operated by partner airlines). This easy and speedy service will be available for JAL Mileage Bank (JMB) members registered in Japan holding an e-ticket or ATB ticket (magnetic boarding pass - excluding group travel ticket holders).

The International Flight Web Check-in Service allows customers to select a seat on the seat map displayed on the Web screen of their computer or cell phone and check-in from three days before the departure date up to one hour prior to flight departure. Customers can even change seats, which was not possible with the advance seat selection service.

On completing Web check-in, customers can easily and speedily pick up their boarding pass at an airport Self-check-in Machine or JAL airport counter. E-ticket holders using the Self-check-in Machines need only to insert their passport and their boarding pass will be issued in about 20 seconds. International Flight Self-check-in Machines are located at Narita, Kansai, Nagoya (Centrair), Haneda and London. At other airports, customers are requested to go to the check-in counter to pick up their boarding pass.

JAL will install exclusive Self-check-in Machines for International Flight Web Check-in at Narita, Kansai, Nagoya (Centrair) and Haneda Airports for customers using the Web check-in system, to help make boarding procedures even smoother. Customers with baggage can check-in their baggage at a nearby baggage check-in counter.

International Flight Web Check-in Bonus Mile Campaign

From 1 April 2005 until 30 June 2005, JMB Japan region members, flying on routes where International Flight Web Check-in is available and who have used this service, will be awarded 200 bonus miles for a one way flight (400 miles for a return trip). Bonus miles will be accumulated automatically when using the International Web Check-in Service.

Increase of International Self-check-in Machines

At Narita Airport, JAL is installing 15 additional International Self-check-in machines, bringing the total to 30.

Tokyo's thickest snow in seven years cancels flights, disrupts traffic

Unusually heavy snowfall blanketed Tokyo, cancelling or delaying dozens of flights and trains and slowing down road traffic.

Some two centimeters (four-fifths of an inch) of snow accumulated in downtown Tokyo, the first time since 1998 that more than one centimeter of snow covered the Japanese capital, according to the meteorological agency.

All Nippon Airways said it had cancelled 38 domestic flights out of Haneda airport in the metropolis. Its main competitor Japan Airlines said it had called off several flights.

Shinkansen bullet trains were running at lower speeds near Tokyo, leading to delays, as the snow turned into rain and slush by late morning.

Sections of expressways were also temporarily closed as a precaution.

No damage or injuries were reported.

JAL Expands Japan-China Network
7 March 2005

Japan Airlines is expanding its Japan-China network to include 13 cities in China served by 29 routes and 237 flights per week. Including domestic code share flights within China and connection services, the number of cities in China accessed by JAL will total 20.

From March 27 JAL will expand its connection services through Beijing to six additional cities in China, in cooperation with China Southern Airlines These cities include Harbin, Changchun, Zhengzhou, Wuhan, Shenyang and Urumqi.

These connection services, under the name of JAL China Express, provide smooth and convenient connections, including the use of lounges at Beijing and escort service from the arrival gate to the check-in counter of the connection flight by airport staff, for normal fare passengers traveling beyond Beijing.

JAL already has JAL China Express connection services in place with Hainan Airlines beyond Beijing to Chengdu, Xian and Chongqing. The new agreement with China Southern expands the total number of Chinese cities served through JAL China Express to nine points.

From May 9 JAL and Xiamen Airlines have agreed to expand their code share agreement by adding three weekly roundtrip flights between Osaka’s Kansai International Airport and Xiamen (Amoy) with Xiamen Airlines as the operating carrier. JAL and Xiamen Airlines already operate three weekly round trip flights between Tokyo and Xiamen with JAL as the operating carrier.

Also, in mid May, JAL and Hainan Airlines plan to expand their code share flights with a new daily flight between Beijing and Chengdu, operated by Hainan Airlines and a daily Tokyo (Haneda)-Osaka (Kansai) flight operated by JAL. JAL and Hainan Airlines started a code share flight on the Osaka-Haikou route on October 31 last year with Hainan Airlines as the operating carrier.

Japan Airlines to cut 5,900 jobs
Thursday 10th March, 2005 (UPI)

Japan Airlines has announced it will cut 5,900 jobs over three years and appoint a new chief executive officer, Channel NewsAsia reported Thursday.

Under a new plan, Asia's biggest airline will cut the jobs by the end of March 2008, compared with its previous target for 4,500 job losses by March 2007.

President Toshiyuki Shinmachi, 62, will replace Isao Kaneko, 67, as chief executive officer.

Last month JAL said it had returned to profit in the nine months ending in December, although it suffered a net loss in the final quarter of 2004 because of rising fuel costs.

Demand for overseas travel has recovered from the impact of the war in Iraq and the 2003 outbreak of severe acute respiratory syndrome, the airline said.

JAL plane hits runway on landing
Tuesday 22nd March, 2005 (UPI)

A buffer on the rear of a Japan Airlines jet hit the runway upon landing at Japan's Fukushima Airport Tuesday morning, the Mainichi Shimbun reported.

No one was injured, and the main body of the aircraft did not sustain any damage in the accident, airport officials said. The airport was temporarily closed until fragments of the damaged part were removed. A runway lamp was also broken after being hit by the buffer.

JAL Flight 2261, a Boeing 767-300 which had flown from Osaka Airport with 133 passengers and crew members aboard, hit the runway when it landed around 9:15 a.m.

Airline officials said the pilot may have raised the aircraft's nose too sharply prior to the landing.

The accident came less than a week after JAL executives were summoned before Japan's Transport Ministry over a recent series of safety violations involving the company's airplanes.

JAL Pilots, Attendants Cancel Strike

March 23, 2005

Japan Airlines said its union members had canceled a strike set for Thursday over pay rises and other issues.

The strike planned by JAL's 2,648 pilots, flight attendants and other union members would have affected about 30 percent of its domestic flights.

No flights -- domestic or international -- will be canceled on Thursday, JAL said, without specifying a reason for the strike cancellation.

Kyodo news agency reported that union members at All Nippon Airways had also canceled a strike planned for Thursday.

ANA had said the strike by its 1,548 union members would force the company to cancel about 40 percent of its domestic flights, but no international flights.
