On Corridor 8..it's just a lack of planning ahead..the irony is these underpasses in the southern segment of the corridor are only one lane each direction the reason for sharing the lane but were built as recent as late 2006. In other parts, such as the Ancol Busway from the Theme Park to Mangga Dua(A distance of 300 m), if the busway lane was totally exclusive..a huge build of traffic will happen.

Btw, here is a pic of the test run of the Corridor 8 of the busway, slated to be operated tomorrow :

City kicks off Corridor 8 Lebak Bulus-Harmoni route

Prodita Sabarini , THE JAKARTA POST , JAKARTA | Sat, 02/21/2009 12:25 PM | City

The city administration will launch the latest and much-awaited Transjakarta busway lane Saturday, servicing passengers commuting from South and West Jakarta to Central Jakarta.

On Friday, the Jakarta Transportation Agency head M. Tauchid said private cars and motorcycles should vacate the busway lanes stretching from South Jakarta’s Lebak Bulus to Harmoni in Central Jakarta.

After a one-week delay from its scheduled launch this year, some 25 buses from PT Eka Sari Lorena Transport and PT Primajasa Perdanarayautama will operate Saturday at 1 p.m. after Jakarta Governor Fauzi Bowo officiates the new Corridor 8 in the morning.

Previously, the city administration planned to launch the corridor using buses from other corridors.

Corridor 8 will be the first Transjakarta service to be launched under Fauzi’s administration. Corridor 4 to 7 were launched in January 2007 by governor Sutiyoso.

Starting Sunday, buses will operate from 5 a.m. to 10 p.m. with eight- to 15-minute headways expected.

To have the ideal five-minute headway time, the busway operator has to provide 45 buses.

The Corridor 8 will run two routes — from Lebak Bulus to Tomang in West Jakarta and from Grogol, West Jakarta to Harmoni via Tomang.

The Grogol-Harmoni route will run by modifying busway Corridor 3 buses, giving two options for passengers taking Corridor 3.

Transjakarta has not released the schedule for the fully functioning Corridor 8, which is supposed to serve the 29-kilometer Lebak Bulus-Harmoni route with at least 45 buses, without passengers having to switch to Corridor 3 to reach Harmoni.

The corridor will pass 24 bus stops, including two Corridor 3 stops – Indosiar and Jelambar.
The route will also pass two bus stops at the exclusive residential area Pondok Indah, whose residents protested against the construction of a busway corridor through their area two years ago.

Several residents of Pondok Indah said the busway lanes along Jl. Pondok Indah Raya would worsen traffic. In addition, they said to make way for the lanes, the city would have to cut dozens of palm trees.

Some of residents said the palm trees were a signature of the area, which was called the Beverly Hills of Jakarta by some.

One Pondok Indah bus stop has a link to the sky bridge connecting the two Pondok Indah Malls, making it easier for passengers to enter the mall and for shoppers to take the Transjakarta bus.

The total estimated time of travel from Lebak Bulus to the Indosiar stop and back is an hour and 50 minutes during off-peak time and two and a half hours during busy times.

Meanwhile, estimated time to travel from Lebak Bulus to Tomang and back is three hours during peak time and two hours and twenty minutes during less busy hours.

Corridor 8 was scheduled to roll out by September 2008, however, city administrators and busway operator Transjakarta missed several deadlines due to construction delays and bus shortages, leaving the facilities idle.

On Thursday, the governor said the city would receive a US$ 450 million from the central government for Jakarta’s mass rapid transit project.

From the Jakarta Post:

Number 8, not running late: A Transjakarta public bus, serving South Jakarta’s Lebak Bulus-Harmoni in Central Jakarta known as Corridor 8, runs through an under-pass in Pondok Indah, South Jakarta, Saturday. The much awaited new busway lane was inaugurated by Governor Fauzi Bowo

it's a good plan now for jakarta in 2015 jakarta have 15 corridors of busway and the construction is started with another phase of Jakarta MRT. in 2015 jakarta have 1 MRT line and it will continue to build another, and another MRT. and on 2025 Jakarta will connect with the Other cities in outside Java Island such as Sumatra.

well maybe it was late but, it's more better late than plans nothing.

It's interesting how the way TransJakarta is presented here and the view of people who actually use it are complete opposites.

Will any serious efforts be taken in order to make the system more reliable and comfortable?

Transjakarta has now an iPhone app that is integrated to find restaurants near a stop:

Screenshots from http://equinoxapps.com/apps/transjakarta/

Detailnya:

TransJakarta - Your Personal BusWay Navigator

FREE FOR A LIMITED TIME • UPDATED WITH CORRIDOR 8
COMPLETE BUUUK INTEGRATION

If you have ever been to Jakarta - the 15+ million resident capital city of Indonesia - you will know a few things for sure: 1. The city is really big, 2. The traffic is really bad and 3. Public transportation is really awful. The Jakarta government's solution to this is a system of buses - called TransJakarta, or the BusWay. Hundreds of natural gas-powered buses plow down their dedicated lane in each of the 8 "Corridors" and whisk you off to parts of the city you would never dream of trying to reach by car or taxi.

TransJakarta - the iPhone App - is your personal tool to master the intricacies of the system and get around this urban sprawl like a local. Each of the 100+ stops is listed and geocoded with complete Google Maps of the area around the stop and tips on transferring to different lines. There is also complete buUuk integration to see restaurants around each of the stops (buUuk required - it's a free download from the App Store. Click here to get it).
You'll love the spot-on custom system reference map (most of the available maps online are loaded with inaccuracies) as well as an "Info" section to get the latest scoop on route and fare information. And since all the data is downloaded from the server we can update it quickly when there are changes to the routes or stops (yep, it happens a lot) and you will always have the latest info on TransJakarta.

Features
- The most accurate hi-resolution color-coded map of all 8 lines of TransJakarta available. Double-tap or pinch to zoom in and out

- Complete listings of all stops with newly-released Google Maps of Jakarta with the ability to pan around the area of your stop

- Easily switch the direction of the routes depending on which way you are travelling so you'll never miss your stop

- Live updates on new stops, new corridors and new maps

- Complete buUuk integration to see all the restaurants around each of the 100+ stops

Coming soon

- Route Tracker - using your iPhone's GPS, you can see exactly where you are in the system and which way you are going

- Route Planner - pick two points on the map and we'll tell you *about* how long it will take you and compare that to the time and expense of a taxi

- Tweets from TransJakarta passengers giving up to the minute status messages

Fauzi said he hoped his administration could finish the land acquisition in 2009 and continue the construction process in 2010.

"We hope construction can finish in 2012 and the MRT can start operating by 2014," he said.

But later, I read that the basic design consultation process is expected to take around 14 months. The governor hopes it can be done faster and the MRT will be operational in 2016.

So what is the target date? 2014 or 2016?

Is there any remaining of now closed tramway system present in today’s Jakarta? Note, Jakarta tram was described in many Bengali books in India during the sixties.
