Some great photo's there! Such a shame a lot of it has gone.

Where was the Palace Theatre?? And what happened to St.Pauls?

the st pauls chapel was destroyed in the war, now in its place is the peace gardens (formerly st pauls gardens)

i do wish a lot of these buildings were still around. most of them were absolutely gorgeous. and i also keep finding ones that i never knew about. i think its quite a shame that the grand hotel was demolished in 1971 it was apparently THE place to stay in the city. however i do like the fountain precinct (which is where it was) so its not so bad

St Pauls church wasn't destroyed in the war. The council have always done more than German bombs ever could in destroying the nicer buildings of Sheffield.

St Pauls was demolished in 1938 because it wasn't getting used much as a church after the congregation declined.

I don't know whether this was bombed, or demolished (probably the latter), but I always think it's a travesty that this one isn't around anymore. http://www.picturesheffield.com/cgi-...f.refno=s10497

I had a look at the Cathedral yesterday. I think we got the cathedral we deserve. Like the city it's a bit crap and a total mish-mash of styles. It's not really a proper cathedral, there's churches bigger than that in many villages.

Have you ever seen the cathedral that was planned? It was huge, but the day that building work began, the war started.

There's pictures of it somewhere on here.

Yeah, it's a good collection, although it makes me quite sad sometimes looking at what we could've had.

It actually burnt down. I used to work in TJHughes (The shame!) while at collage and the store manager had picture of all the stores on the walls all the way back to Walshes. They tried to recreate some of the features of the old building in the new one like the terrace cafe.

That's a real shame.

Once i'm a multi-billionare, i'll rebuild it to the same (external) plans, and open it as a posh department store. Just a few years to wait...

I finally got round to digging out the panorama of Sheffield I took from the top floor of the Arts Tower in 1977. Sorry about the crappy "instamatic" print quality, but you get the impression of what Sheffield was like then. The main difference is how low-rise Sheffield has become beyond the city centre. Gone are Kelvin Flats, the main citadel of Hyde Park and all the Norfolk Park towers that used to look so great the way they were spread out and arranged on the hillside.

Here they are going clockwise.

Looking over Crookes Valley Park, doesn't look much different today.

Overlooking Upperthorpe towards Hillsbourough.

Overlooking Upperthorpe and Netherthorpe. Look, Kelvin Flats! Kelham Island and the Don Valley was still all small factories. No Ski slope on Parkwood hill which just looked a mess. Far left two cooling towers - where were they?

Looking over the city centre. Notice the line of Hyde Park, Park Hill and Norfolk Park flats. Jessops Hospital near right and St Georges Church still black with soot.

Looking over West Street towards the city centre, Norfolk Park flats in the background. Notice Devonshire Green as a bomb site/car park in the middle of the photo. St Mary's Church in the middle distance at the right was still black. Most of the foreground Victorian and Georgian houses and factories are now gone.

Looking out over Broomhall towards Hunter's Bar, newly built Hallamshire Hospital on the right. The big difference is the Octogon wasn't built yet, it's just a car park.

Wasn't there a big fire in Broomhall Flats after they opened that caused a section to be condemened? I'm sure Joe Scarborough (a fountain of local knowledge) painted a picture of the rescue of all things!

I can't believe I am 20 years old and Sheffield in places in barely recognisable to what it was when I was a little nipper. There can't be many places outside Baghdad and Kabul where you can say that.
