I have two statements to make. First of all what is UT? I want to go there to see the new Sapphire rendering I hear of.
Secondly.. maybe I'll get eaten alive for saying this. But doesn't anyone else think that the new Sapphire would look good as... (follow the directions ![]() 1.) The Citicorp center in NY: 2.) Made into all mint-coloured green glass; replace the horizontal window bands on Citicorp with a slightly different coloured glass or give them metal surrounds or something for some interest on the sides 3.) take away the weird legs at the bottom of Citicorp, for a more normal T.O. base 4.) terrace the angled roof section into glass-fronted balcony terraces 5.) ...and Voila! Something similar to the new design.... but better! Make fun of me if you dare/wish but it's an idea that's been stuck in my head since day one of the latest redesign.-thryve |

IM BAAAACK!!!!! I was visiting my dads place in Weston all week and had access to a computer aarrgggh. Well....i like the new design...lack of detail..so what who gived a shit, knowing Cassius he will come up with a much better rendering when he gets the time (a jaw dropping drop dead sexy rendering
) I KNOW this tower will look great beside trump and behind FCP. This tower, Trump and BA center together will look great, and it stays true to a "boxyness" of Toronto in relation to towers such as the Scotia Plaza, In otherwords its not going to be tacky and stick out near as much as the old designs for Sapphire tower would have, and its shorter (73 stories) which means it will look better in the side profile of the skylibe because it wont be such a drastic drop off. I can see city council approving this tower, it deals with the shadowing issue very nicely (73 story's instead of 90+) and the slooped roof will also shorten the shadow ALLOT.Once cassuis makes a rendering of it looking "real" and along side Trump and FCP then you will all see how nice it will look. There is much the design is lacking and i would have done allot of things differently myself, but this is stinson we are talking about here who is not exactly and architectural genuis...or his "planners" as he calls them, so lets not be to critical. __________________

Can't believe someone actually mentioned mirrored glass - blech - that stuff shoud stay dead and buried in the eighties
A mullion free, reflective glass curtain wall in place of the typical window wall would be cool |

Reported by Edward Chamberlain - 2006-02-04 News: Race for Toronto’s tallest over – for now Toronto: City Hall has put a limit on developer Harry Stinson’s aspirations of challenging the Trump International Hotel & Tower for the title of Toronto’s tallest high-rise, citing adverse shadow effects on Nathan Phillip’s Square as the main reason for reducing the project’s height. As a compromise the tower has been scaled back to 73 floors from 90 (putting it well back of Trump’s proposal despite still having more storeys), and the overall design will be completely revamped once again. The latest renderings now show the building rising from a more traditional rectangular footprint to a step-terrace style roof. The façade has also gradated from sapphire blue to more of an emerald green, suggesting yet another name change as well. This news surely comes as a disappointment for those hoping to witness a good old fashioned “race for the skies” - though one should not discount the possibility of the previous design resurfacing somewhere else in the city. But for now, watching whether the current building ever actually gets past the planning stages could prove interesting enough in it’s own right.

^LOL
were you possibly looking at the Sapphire elevation when you came up with that idea? (Hey, IMO, your plan sounds exactly like the "latest redesign") |

I actually thought that up when I heard that it would have a chiselled top, that is, after I thought up the same idea but cylindrical. (I, at that point, was still under the impression that it was going to be cylindrical.)
Maybe this latest redesign will be along those lines. I guess we need more detailed renderings to know. -thryve |

Call me boring, but I think a flat top like this would be just as nice... would look great with all that layering you've added on the left side.

For the record Thryve, Cass invited suggestions regarding his elevation/massing.
I didn't invite you to slice the top off my effort, OK?

I am very much liking the way this building is shaping up. Nice texture on the sides!
What if the "stepped" parts were gentle curving swoops? This could lead to one side of the building being either undulating, or having distinct curves.. Just an idea, and it may be a goofy one.... ![]() I don't normally like a peak at the top, but in this case it makes perfect sense, as it is a result of the design, and not just a gratuitous hat perched on top of a building. Very nice, guys!
