The crane will lift 61 concrete beams, which were used to support the weight of the now-demolished exhibition centre over the London Underground lines running underneath.

The beams need to be removed before on-site construction can commence.

Lambeth Palace Library will look great! It reminds me of some projects by Alvar Aalto.

Are there any more skyscrapers planned for the vicinity of The Shard?

It still looks so lonely on that side of the river!

Fielden House is under construction next to the Shard. There's also the prospect of another tower at New City Court.

Don't forget the Quill, which has recently been bought but Greystar so is guarantied to be built now.

Now LB station redevelopment is in its end stages plans for something on the 3 houses site will no doubt emerge and Guys also have in their masterplan a tower on the Guys campus. Colechurch House has also long had mooted a potential tower.

However how tall any of them will be is not known as Southwark are still keen for the Shard to be the dominant tower around here.

I think the Shard works as a stand alone tower, i think if there are competing towers nearby it might resemble Shanghai, which while amazing has too much competition for the eye, something London needs to move away from IMO.

the only way you could move London away from a feeling of 'too much competition for the eye' is to nuke it from orbit and turn the whole area to glass.

except even then you'd have people on here saying the smoldering wasteland of charred rubble was too retro.

I think it'll eventually get some company even though I like it standing alone.

There's also the prospect of a tower proposal at Shand Street, near the Shard.
