That's the Greater Tokyo Area though, right? So it's somewhat of a disingenuous comparison. Found this image demonstrating the relative densities:

Only in theory. In reality, the South Downs will likely obscure the view.

I disagree. Yes Tokyo and the Kanto plain is the world's largest metro region, but London/SE, with 25 million people, is hardly a 'village'! London's much grander and more architecturally impressive than Tokyo. It's also far more international - the most globally connected city on earth - a bigger and more comprehensive financial centre, and more culturally influential too.

Others have responded excellently, but yes, it's like comparing apples, oranges and bananas and saying that they are the same thing.

No city can compare to the size of 'Tokyo', if (the much used) Greater Tokyo Area figure is used. If it is, then it is a mega region rather than a 'city'.
People from (say) Yokohama and Kawagoe are not easily going to say they are proud Tokyoites. (Much like inhabitants of Bridgeport CT (or even Philadelphians - if we are going to stretch it to the proportions we are talking about) wouldn't likely call themselves New Yorkers.)

It's the same as people starting to say that the Pearl River Delta region in Guangdong, China is now the largest 'city'. When (like the Greater Tokyo Area), it is a mega region (which, like Greater Tokyo, has large tracts of rural areas, forests and mountains separating and dividing various settlements).

London and the south-east region would be perhaps an equivalent to Greater Tokyo region with the exception that the Tokyo one is bigger, but in terms of city proper Tokyo is only 4.9 million more people.
London is 8.6 million
Tokyo is 13.5 million
New York is smaller than both with just 8.5 million

I agree London is more globally connected& more creative modern architecture building&dynamic&very interesting vibrant city
but about population&city size&city's wealth tokyo is no contest.

btw london's big problem is "moped crime"
can't imaginable how top 1 city's citizens always nervous about stealing smartphone when they walk. there are Too many CCTV in the city. but how can londond police can't prevent moped and stop epidemic.
don't get me wrong i really like London though.
