Too bad, it would have been by far the most beautifull tower of CW.
hi, i read this earlier in the thread and wasnt sure if it was replied to. but the real reason the columbus tower was cancelled is because the rich arab dude who was funding the project passed away! and the site is back up for grabs, so perhaps another tower will go up(hopefuly) because that corner of the wharf would look decent with another huge tower

You are correct, though I think there was probably more than one factor. Like Bnmaddict says, crossrail is one of the reasons, it has plagued more than 1 tower in CW.

And the site is back up for grabs?

I didn't know it was back up for sale! This could be great!

North quay has been held up by crossrail, they wanted to by the site for something. Though it is looking more likely that they won't because CW will claim millions from them.

To post pictures, right click on it, select properties, and copy the url. There is a little 'insert image' icon on the toolbar when you create a new post. Just click on it and copy the text into there.

The Xrail tower will be built under West India Quay dock . The Columbus tower site is right above the tunnels which is porbably the main reason the site was sold. The North Quay site is where they plan to use for building works associated with XRail such as removing & delivering material for the tunnel & station. As a result nothing will be built on those sites untill Xrail is built which at this rate will proably be 2014.

CW can not develop on the site as if they tryed to the government would compulsory purchase the site.

The government will not compulsory purchase North Quay. North Quay Towers will go ahead if anchor tenants are secured.

CW has started to developing the site with the construction of the EDF power station that will supply electricity to the North Quay developments, Heron Quays West, buildings u/c around Churchill Plc.

Xrail will eventually come up with a revised shorter and underground isle of dogs station that will not conflict with North Quay. Excavations, etc. will proceed via Billinsgate market.

Columbus tower at Herstmere House is a totally different story as this tower would have to be built straight above the tunnels.

Im not so sure about that. That story you posted way back says the opposite. The station & tunnels is a huge undertaking & this sie would be vital for them to build it- It will be right infront of NQ & If they used Billingsgate they would not only have to have a CPO but content with the owners & ,workers & suppliers of the fish market & the fact that it London fish market & you cant just close that without a replacement etc.

"But Crossrail has indicated it would have to compulsorily acquire the land to build the 475m-long Isle of Dogs station in West India Dock - throwing the plans into question."

http://icthewharf.icnetwork.co.uk/th...name_page.html

The simple fact is that CW know the (empty ) NQ site will be needed & will settle for compensation. Xrail & the new station is vital for CW continued growth & in the mid- long term it will make NQ more attractive as it will have the Xrail station on its front door step.

CW can wait untill 2014 or whenever they actually decide to build Xrail as they still have RS & the Wood Wharf development in the pipeline.

33-35 Commercial Road

Here's a new midrise planned for the eastern edge of the City.

It's going up near the London Metropolitan University, and will house around 750 students.

Height is 95m/36 storeys. It should help to bulk the cluster out to the northeast. Notice the cool lighting scheme on the roof.
